You know that meme that starts with “all my friends are getting married and having babies and I’m over here like…” then it’s either a picture of someone measuring the height of a dog, or a comment about having wine for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I even saw one about loving running – definitely not one I relate to. π Basically, your friends are hitting those milestones society tells you to hit and instead of doing that you’re off doing something else that has nothing to do with those milestones.
That was me the other day.
I was out running an errand, stumbled across the Halloween section of a store and impulse bought a bat skull with eyes that light up green. It is so incredibly adorable, I mean if that’s your esthetic it’s adorable, if not you might find it a bit odd or creepy, but to each their own.
So there I am driving home happy with my little purchase and I realized I became that joke or meme, whatever you want to label it. My friends are either already married with kids, or have kids without the marriage part, are married without the kids part, are engaged, are having new babies, buying property, doing all these things on the “grown up checklist” and I’m over here smiling because I bought a bat skull.
To be clear, this is not a woe-is-me post, I am quite happy over here with my newly acquired bat skull. I’m also not trying to diss my friends who choose a more traditional route, if they are happy I’m happy for them. It’s just sometimes the differences make me laugh, how can they not?
I have amazing friends, one is currently planning a wedding, one just had a baby, multiple friends are raising teenagers (which is terrifying lol). Most of them at some point bought property, figured out a stable career, ya know, they act like traditional grown-ups and I fly to LA to attend a concert, buy a sugar bowl with a bat pattern on it for my kitchen, and string up fairy lights over the desk where I work on my budget because I want a whimsical setting for a serious project.
I’m a grown-up in my own way, I’m just not using the same checklist as most of the other grown-ups, but I think that’s okay because we all have to find the way that feels right for us…right?
Dragon to the left, new bat skull to the right, aren’t they great? π
