Pirate Pak Day

17 Aug

White Spot is a restaurant chain that has a kid’s meal called the Pirate Pak. It is basically a kid’s meal that comes in a cardboard pirate ship and is accompanied by a gold coin. What pirate ship is complete without a treasure I ask you?

white-spot-pirate-pak-day

Once a year, maybe it is twice I’m not really sure, they have Pirate Pak Day, which is when adults can also order a Pirate Pak and $2 from every sale goes to the Zajac Ranch for Children, a summer camp for children and young adults with serious medical conditions. According to White Spot’s website they have raised over $660,000 for Zajac Ranch over the years. If you eat-in a portion of sales from alcoholic drinks also goes to the Zajac Ranch, so bottoms up! 😉

I guess the idea is to appeal to the nostalgia of adults who grew up eating Pirate Pak’s as a kid, which I have to admit, is smart marketing. I however did not grow up eating them. While White Spot is in Alberta now, it wasn’t when I was growing up, or if it was it wasn’t in my city, so I only learned about them when I moved to BC.

The restaurant is a family type of place, good food but nothing fancy, decent prices, a chill atmosphere. I tend to go there with friends if we are looking for a quick meal before going to a movie, situations like that.

I’ve never had some driving urge to order a Pirate Pak, probably because I’ve never looked at the children’s menu lol 😉 Since this past Wednesday was Pirate Pak Day I thought why not? Let’s see what all the fuss is about!

The adult’s Pirate Pak is portioned for adults and your choices are a variety of burgers, fish & chips, a beef dip, chicken fingers & fries, or a club sandwich.  I chose the legendary burger, it came with fries, coleslaw, and a can of pop. On top of that it also came with my choice of ice cream, I opted for strawberry, and there was even a gold coin at the bottom of my take-away bag.

Yay for pirate booty!

Not gonna lie, I was kinda hoping for a pirate ship, even if it would end up in my recycle bin by the end of the night lol

The burger was delish, as their burgers always are, and don’t snub your nose at that little coleslaw, it is simple and perfect every time. I haven’t eaten the gold coin, they tend to be made out of cheap chocolate and I have never liked them in the past so I see no reason to test this one out to see if it is any different, even if finding it in the bag did make me grin.

Seriously, it is the little things that can take a normal thing (like your take-away meal) from normal to a bit more fun and smile inducing.

Find the little things people, they help you smile! And if you’re near a White Spot maybe try a Pirate Pak next time they have Pirate Pak Day, you help make camp possible for some very sick kids and you get a tasty meal, an efficient use of time and money – if you want to think all grown-up about it. 😉 lol

Hunting For Information

3 Oct

I met a friend for coffee today which turned in to lunch at White Spot which turned in to my first meal that I can’t properly track because I didn’t cook it at home. Erg.

I knew this was bound to happen but why-oh-why did it have to happen so soon? *pout* I’m weird in that if I am tracking I want to be able to track perfectly for every single thing I eat, if something happens and I can’t track a meal then I feel “what is the point” and I usually quit. It’s stupid, I know. It’s just that if I’m doing something, I want to do it right, shrug.

So for the rest of the day I didn’t know what to do. Should I eat? Should I assume my meal was all my calories for the day and my punishment for eating something I shouldn’t have is that I don’t eat again today? What do I dooooooo?

Well, duh, I went online and went hunting for the nutritional information lol Gotta love the internet!

At first I couldn’t find what I needed, the salad is new and I wasn’t seeing it on any of the nutritional information charts that White Spot has online…granted I was searching while at work so I couldn’t fully dedicate my focus to my sleuthing lol When I got home I was all ready to admit defeat for tracking my food today but I decided to give it another go and boom! Found it! *happy dance* Actually, more like horrified gasp…

I am not so dumb that I don’t know that restaurant salads are not always healthy, that in fact, they can be hiding a huuuuuge amount of calories, fat etc and you might just be better off buying a chicken burger or sandwich or some other dish, that knowledge didn’t stop me from buying a salad though…and no, it wasn’t one of the salads marked as a healthy choice, it was a new salad that sounded tasty…I let my desire for something tasty dictate my food choice and I am now kicking myself for that. Kicking hard!

The salad that I ate (ate every single bite of I might add) is the Candied Salmon Spinach Salad. I know, I know, the word “candied” is a dead give away, sigh. I somehow thought the spinach and salmon in the salad would counteract the candied part and the dressing…obviously it did not.

Here, this is the salad description, how can a girl resist the sound of this salad?

Candied salmon, fresh strawberries, gingered pecans, red onion & Okanagan goat cheese on spinach dressed with our champagne vinaigrette. With garlic panini bread.

And yeah, I ate the bread too…

After my second round of internet searching I learned that my lunch was 868 calories! Broken down that is 682 calories for the salad and 186 for the garlic bread.

Yes, I do know I could have saved calories by getting the dressing on the side but I didn’t so no point in lecturing me about it now. 😛

Here comes the second problem with food…when I was at work I had to decide if I should eat dinner or not. I decided I should, cause if I skip eating that’ll mess with my metabolism, right? Right. So, I ate dinner.

Dinner at work today was salmon (not candied!), with squash and other veggies on top of couscous. Soooo, healthy? I dunno, shrug. The salmon didn’t have a sauce or anything, so I’m leaning towards that part being healthy, and the veggies were probably ok too, but what about couscous?

After some hunting online I came up with approximate numbers for dinner, 88 calories for the couscous, 82 calories for the veggies and 354 calories for the salmon. The calories for the salmon pains me, pains! That’s a total count of 524 which puts me at a total of 1392 for the day.

I can’t decide how I feel about that number. *confused face*

My first two days tracking my calories I wanted to be under 1200 calories a day, the second day I went over a bit and ate 1263, but I thought that wasn’t sooooo bad. After lunch today I was all ready to be super pissed off at myself but I was talking to a friend at work who is a personal trainer and she said I should not be eating under 1200 calories a day, that is too few calories and I’ll put myself in to starvation mode. I’m still not sure exactly how many calories I should be eating, but if I am aiming for 1200 now, then 1392 isn’t so much over that I can’t recover from it, right?…Riiiiiight…ok, so maybe I am trying to make myself feel better and I could be way off, I dunno, sigh.

What sucks is that it is now almost midnight and I am hungry *pout* Looks like my two high calorie meals today didn’t keep me full, nor did all the drinks I had which no, I don’t mean alcoholic drinks but diet coke, water and tea.

So yeah, that is how my third day went, ordering ridiculously bad for me food and ending up being hungry at the end of the day. I want a cookie *pout* 😉

Thank Goodness For Wifi

22 Dec

All I can say is thank you to all the various entities out there for wifi! I have been at the airport since 5:30pm, it is currently 9:22pm and I have no hopes of getting out of here any earlier then midnight. Oy!

I shouldn’t complain, I mean really? What do I have to complain about in the grand scheme of things? That I’m tired? Well sure, but lots of people are tired, trust me, I’m looking at a lot of them lol That my flight isn’t on time? Being able to afford to fly home to see my family at Christmas time is a privilege not everybody has so instead of being cranky the flight is late I am grateful that I will eventually be on a plane headed home for a short but lovely visit. That I don’t have a strong enough wifi signal to stream a movie? People at the other end of my country are suffering massive power outages due to severe winter storms, I am lucky to be inside, where it is warm, there is ample food and drink (sure it’s over priced but that’s airports for ya!) and the wifi signal is at least strong enough to blog. Oh and there is enough electricity flowing around here my phone is currently plugged in to a post right beside me charging while I blissfully type away.

Oh dear, new update is departure at 12:47am with arrival sometime after 3am…

There is something soothing about airports, I can’t quite put my finger on what it is, just that I always like being in them. Sure sometimes you are rushed and stressed but for the most part (in my experience anyways) it’s a bunch of walking, interspersed with sitting and lots and lots of people watching. Something I love to do! And hey, all these people are trapped in here with me which means I get to spy on a lot of them for a long length of time bwahahahahaha <– that is my evil laugh 😉

This dude knows how to people spy...er...watch!

This dude knows how to people spy…er…watch!

I do kinda wish the lady sitting next to me who seems to be trying her best to cough up her lung would go away but since we are both using the charging station for our phones odds of that are slim to none. Ah well, shrug.

So far my time in the airport has been great! It usually is. 🙂

I am incapable of packing light and always am a little over weight with my checked luggage, which I was this time, no surprise. What I am proud of is for the first time I brought a fabric shopping bag with me specifically for the items I would have to take out of the suitcase, yay for thinking ahead! I even knew what I was going to take out lol It sucks that I am hauling around a second bag to take on the plane with me but whatev, I knew it’d happen, it is practically inevitable in the land of me. 😛

When I saw my flight was delayed by a couple hours I decided I’d head in to White Spot and get a real meal instead of something fast foodie from the food court. I got a chicken burger from the healthy section of the menu but it wasn’t very good, sadness. When the waitress finally came back I asked for the yam fries to be boxed but not the burger because it wasn’t good (I left half of it on the plate), she then asked if I wanted anything else which is such a dangerous question for me lol I got a blueberry cheesecake (hey, don’t judge! it’s small!) and highly enjoyed that. When I got my bill she had taken off the entree since I said it wasn’t good, nice huh? I never mean to be that person who complains to try to get a lower bill so when I saw the bill I felt a little bad she had done that but like I am gonna complain? Nuh-uh! I tipped her based on what the bill would have been though, karma ya know?

Then I re-checked the flight board and saw my flight was delayed even more so I went to the check in counter cause I had a question and because the flight was delayed they gave me a $10 voucher to use at any of the vendors as a “sorry you are stuck here” kind of thing. See why I love WestJet?? I went to Tim Horton’s (a tradition when I travel lol), got a donut and tea and then bought a bunch of Timbits for the WestJet staff, I figured they were gonna have a lot of cranky people on their hands due to the flight delays and sugar might help lol

Yum! I hope they liked them!

Yum! I hope they liked them!

Now I’m sitting in the boarding area, and they just announced that everyone on my flight will get a voucher to use at any of the vendors due to the flight delay. I know they are doing that to try to keep us from getting cranky but I don’t care, I still think it is nice. Some companies don’t care if you are cranky or not, least WestJet cares.

My only pressing thing to contemplate right now is do I risk losing a seat near one of the charging stations so I can go pick up my voucher or do I wait a bit and get it later?

Dieters Hell

21 Nov

I found a whole new hell-on-earth, one I never even thought of and therefore was quite unprepared for…

The grocery store during the holiday season *shudder* I never want to go back and yet, it is a place everyone must visit usually once a week.

Why is it a hellish place to be? Simple. Christmas goodies. Oh you know what I mean, all those chocolates, cookies, tins of various sweet treats that all come out this time of year. It’s a dieters hell, even a weight watcher dieters hell cause sure, the program is based on the principle you can eat anything you want you just have to portion it out but really? Do you really think you can buy that box of danish cookies, the tin of seashell chocolates, the cadbury’s chocolate fingers, the ferrero rocher, the Almond Roc, the chocolate orange and all those other things that are now sitting temptingly at the end of every aisle in the grocery store and not blow your diet? Hell no!

They totally took me by surprise, I turned a corner in the grocery store and boom! The empty space that used to be for traffic flow was filled with displays and all those displays were some kind of chocolate or cookie…or cookie chocolate! heh I walked very quickly through that section but I must admit I cast quite a few longing gazes at a lot of those treats. sigh. Oh, and yeah, they were all on sale too! Torture!

So what’s a dieter to do during this loooooooong season? Eat before you shop! lol. Sounds weird but it works. I had just been  out for a late lunch with friends so I was disturbingly full and had no interest in any food, I bought the things on my list and that was it but I know if I had been even a tiny bit hungry it would have been hard to resist picking up something from one of those displays. So my plan for the next, hmm, 7 weeks, is to not step foot in a grocery store unless I am not hungry. Hopefully this works…oh, and the 7 weeks? I figure all the stuff that doesn’t sell will go on sale in the new year so I am enacting this plan through to the second week or so of January. Cross your fingers for me!

Today I ate:

1 Activia = 2 points

1/2 cup cottage cheese = 2 points

1 chocolate glazed timbit = 2 points

White Spot

    – Southwest Bigger Burger (6oz 100% Canadian beef burger with jalapeno jack cheese, marinated onions, chipotle mayo, lettuce and tomato), oh and to make it worse it comes with a spoonful of coleslaw and a serving of fries – I swapped out the normal fries for sweet potato fries (what can I say, I am weak when it comes to sweet potato fries!)

So, I have no idea the points of that burger, coleslaw and fries, sigh. The restaurant’s website doesn’t have nutritional information which by this point we all know is a bad thing. lol. According to weight watchers 1 fast food burger is 6 points, or if you look at the beef the least healthy beef option in the book (85% lean/15% fat) for 3 oz is 5 points, I know my burger was 6oz so my meat alone may have been 10 points (depending how lean the beef was), the bun was probably 2-4 points (let’s go with 4 just in case) and then there are the toppings, sigh, the onions, tomato and lettuce are zero (small mercies) but the cheese, oh the cheese, that was probably 3 (it was 1 slice but no way in hell that was light cheese like what I buy for at home lol) and the sauce (the mayo), there was about 2 tbls of mayo on that and I highly doubt it was light so there is another 2 points…let’s tally this shall we?

Beef = 10, Bun = 4, Cheese = 3, Mayo = 2, That’s 19 right there, but don’t forget the grease used to cook it all (what, you thought I forgot? lol), so it’s actually higher, then there are the yam fries and the coleslaw. 1/2 cup of coleslaw is 4 points, there was only a spoonful of coleslaw so maybe 2 points worth? The yam fries, well, the ones I make at home are 3 points a serving and the restaurant was a way way way bigger serving then what I get at home, so easy 12 points of fries if not more.

I didn’t eat all the burger, but I did eat most of it, and I eventually ate all the fries, lol, I brought about half of them home and ended up snacking on them later in the evening, double sigh.

I don’t know what got in to me! I went in to that restaurant fully intending to order a salad but it’s so frickin cold out that the idea of a salad was just laughable, I wanted something warm! But did I pick a healthy warm dish? Nope. I followed my friends choices and got a burger. Dummy! Argh!

I will have to be very very careful this week, I never start a week having used so many flex points, it’s a little scary. I am going out for lunch Tuesday with peeps from work, it’s been planned for a while and I can’t get out of it (to be honest I don’t want to either, lol) we are going for Japanese so I have no idea what I will order. Also, it’s a restaurant I have never been to so I don’t know what to expect from the menu…hopefully there are some healthy choices. But other then that lunch I absolutely must stick to my points cause I don’t wanna go over my flex points, not when I am this-close to reaching 20 lbs lost. I wonder if sub-consciously I am self-sabatoging my diet so I don’t reach the 20 lb mark…hmm, something to ponder this week…
