Lulu Lemon Said What???

8 Nov

Oh the wonders of being online late at night when you should be sleeping, the things you find!

As if it wasn’t disgusting enough when that ugly CEO from Abercrombie & Fitch said his clothes weren’t for fat people…check out this youtube clip to see what I am talking about…

but the owner of Lulu Lemon is saying his yoga pants are only for women who have a gap between their thighs?

Check out this news clip to see the initial Lulu Lemon incident…

So ok, to give the benefit of the doubt a person could assume there was a glitch in the manufacturing of these pants that made them see through. Embarrassing for the ladies who inadvertently wore them in public but no lasting harm done right? However, the benefit of the doubt is quickly whisked away when you hear what Chip Wilson, the founder of Lulu Lemon has to say about the pants, this is an exert from an interview on http://www.bloomberg.com

Wilson: There has always been pilling. The thing is that women will wear seatbelts that don’t work or they’ll wear a purse that doesn’t work or, quite frankly, some women’s bodies just actually don’t work for it. And I can’t be —

Regan: They don’t work for the pants?

Wilson: No they don’t work for some women’s bodies.

Regan: So more likely that they’ll be see-though on some women’s bodies than others?

Wilson: No, I don’t think that way, because even our small size would fit an extra large. It’s really about the rubbing through the thighs, how much pressure is there, I mean, over a period of time, and how much they use it.

Regan: Interesting, so not every woman can wear a Lululemon pant.

Wilson: No, I think they can, it’s just how they use it.

Here is a link to the full interview:

Bloomberg Interview

I never knew this about Lulu Lemon and I feel a little sad to learn that a company that promotes healthy lifestyles is discriminating against people who are not the stereotypical size 4 or smaller yogi. I did some more research and learned that Lulu goes up to size 12 only (average size of a women in the US is 14) and the sizes 10 and 12 are harder to find in the stores, not as well organized/sorted and basically ignored by the staff. When staff members are interviewed they confirm the store caters to smaller sized women and for the most part tries to ignore anyone “larger”.

Lovely.

What is it with these co-founders and CEOs blatantly discriminating against an entire section of the population? Why are they allowed to get away with it?

I don’t buy Lulu Lemon pants, I did, once, I loved those pants! I bought them at one of the outlets so they weren’t quite as expensive as normal and I thought when I get to my target weight I’ll buy another pair because hell no was I buying a pair for each size I would become as I went down the scale lol that’s waaaaaay too costly. Thing is, I discovered Costco Yoga Pants, those are awesome! They are never more then $20, they last forever, don’t pill, aren’t see through, never lose their shape, don’t need to be babied as much as Lulu pants and I don’t live in fear of staining or somehow ruining them because hey, if I need to replace them it’ll only cost me $17! But I do love Lulu hoodies, in fact, if I could afford it I’d buy a new one right now because both of mine are too large (a nice problem to have but still a problem lol).

My new dilemma though, is should I buy from Lulu ever again? I don’t like the idea of supporting a company that purposefully excludes any section of the population, it is discriminatory and wrong. It seems even more twisted considering they are selling work out clothes. Uh hello, do they not consider the possibility of an over weight woman wanting to lose weight who wants to wear nice work out clothes vs an old t-shirt and sweats? By ignoring this demographic I feel the company is doing harm to themselves. The world is getting fatter, shrug, why aren’t the clothing companies recognizing this and adapting for the shape that society is becoming?

What I mostly worry about though is the lady who works up the courage to go in to Lulu Lemon for the first time, who is a bit larger, who has self esteem issues, who has decided to start a healthier lifestyle that includes working out and who decides to buy cute clothes to wear to help her feel better about herself when she hits up the gym. How will that lady feel when she can’t find something, in a store that sells work out clothes, that fits her, or that fits her and isn’t see through, or pilling, or designed to only last and look good on someone super tiny? How will her experience in a store that caters to size 10 and smaller affect her self esteem? How will the lack of sizes, the lack of choices affect her decision to go work out?

I know for myself, I get discouraged easily when it comes to my size. If I am in a store and don’t find things in my size that look good quickly I leave because I get embarrassed, I think I must be too fat for that store and walk away. Even though I fit in to Lulu Lemon clothes, and even though I love the hoodies, when I walk in to a Lulu store I automatically feel embarrassed and fat and like I don’t belong, just by the design of the store, the look of the staff, the size of the clothes, the fact that I swear every time I’m in one of those stores I am the biggest person in there and I feel like I am being stared at and judged. I know this is on my shoulders, it is my own problem, knowing that helps push me to go in to the store, to look at clothes, because I know it is my own insecurities making me feel that way. But what about that lady at the beginning of her weight loss journey, who feels all those things but also has the added problem of finding the pants she wants in a size 12?

I’m not saying companies should be patting us all on the head and trying to make us feel better about ourselves but I do think companies need to be more mindful of the varying demographics in society and stop purposefully excluding a group, any group, because that decision is most likely going to end up kicking them in their ass.

Toasters Can Melt?!?!

7 Nov

I haven’t written in a while because I have been sick sick sick, ugh. All I would have written about is how I lost: my voice, my ability to swallow, my ability to breath, my ability to sleep and how I had gained: a fever, a throat that hurt so badly I was sure it was being hacked to pieces from throat gremlins, an upset stomach, a never ending cough and general misery. Double ugh!

It is now day, hmm, let’s see here, day 11 of being sick and all I can say is I think I am vaguely, slowly, bit by bit on the mend. Mostly all that is left to deal with is the inability to breath, talk and swallow…oh! and the cough, can’t forget the evil cough. sigh.

Putting all that aside, today is the first day since getting sick I have used the oven. This may seem shocking but keep in mind I barely cook normally so really, 11 days without using the oven isn’t all that shocking lol. 😛 When I had to go to work the kitchen fed me food I am sure was delicious but I could not taste, not even a little bit, it was depressing and when home I have been too tired to care about cooking so I’ve been living off of toast, banana pudding (soooo soothing on the throat!), I had chicken noodle soup one day (couldn’t taste a thing, sigh), um, and, there must be something else…oh yeah! a couple times I cooked an egg. Oh so exciting huh? See why I haven’t been writing? lol

Today I decided this is it, I actually feel different today! I’m still tiring easily, my throat still hurts, I’m still coughing, I still can’t breath through my nose and I still prefer to not talk buuuuuut something in me shifted. Maybe I am just sick of being sick. Maybe I just reached a level of boredom never before reached. Maybe my body is finally starting to fight back and I can somehow detect that. Personally I like the third option 😉

Because I felt differently today I decided I was going to cook an actual meal for dinner, sort of snub my nose as whatever bug has invaded my body. 🙂 It was a simple meal, some mixed frozen veggies and a turkey breast, easy peasy. I put the chicken in the oven, the veggies in the frying pan (no heat yet) and sat down. Then this smell started getting through even my blocked sinuses. It was the smell of burning. I couldn’t figure it out, there was nothing that could be burning in my apartment, so maybe it was coming from upstairs and working its way through the vents? I checked everything in my apartment that is electric, nothing was smoking, nothing was glitchy, so  I opened a window and tried to forget about it. After all, no smoke detectors were going off so whatever was causing that smell couldn’t be all that serious, right? Right!

Ha!

I went to the oven to finally turn the heat on under the veggies and noticed the smell was stronger. On top of the stove lives the kettle and sometimes the toaster. Normally both those items sit on the non-burner part of the stove top buuuut someone (possibly kitchen gremlins?) moved the toaster so it was sitting on top of one of the burners. Unfortunately the toaster was sitting on the back left burner which is where all the heat from the stove comes through, oops!

The result is this:

my poor toaster :(

my poor toaster 😦

The smell was disgusting! Plus, the plastic melted right on to the burner didn’t it? Why yes, yes it did, a nice big glob of melted plastic being all goopy on the burner. Ick.

I unplugged the toaster and moved it over to the sink area (I don’t have a kitchen counter, hence my toaster living on top of the stove) and hoped the plastic would cool quickly enough it wouldn’t goop onto the sink. Then I took a knife and scraped off the melted plastic from the burner. I’m gonna hafta take it off and actually scrub it but it was too hot to handle at that moment so scraping had to do.

I’m not certain if the toaster is safe to use at this point…I think it most likely is, I mean, the plastic at the bottom doesn’t have anything to do with the inside parts that actually toast the bread…right? And really, how important is structural integrity to a toaster? It’s only a toaster!

Personally I think this is further proof I am meant to be rich so I can hire a housekeeper/cook cause someone needs to save me from the various kitchen disasters I get into! lol 😉

A Slightly Delayed Thanksgiving Post

15 Oct

So happy belated Thanksgiving from me to you! 🙂

To be honest I am not a huge Thanksgiving Holiday person, it was never a big thing in my family and a lot of times it seems people use it as an excuse to overeat, shrug. Having said that, my Thanksgiving meal is pizza and if that isn’t overindulging in a bad for me food well then I don’t know what is lol. 😛

Since I work weekends and my family are all a province away (or farther) I spent Thanksgiving weekend doing what I normally do. Working. With a boat race thrown in for good measure. Which, if you consider how much racing I have done this past summer, the boat race this past weekend still counts as what I normally do lol.

It was a different boat race then normal though, a fun race! As in, no medals, no stress, just an end of season festival where instead of racing in dragon boats we race in canoes and the third race of the day is an obstacle course. The races are in a river, a cooooold river! Almost every year a boat tips, teehee, and the shortest race is 1000m. The entire day can be summed up in one word: Epic.

Let me describe the awesomeness of the obstacle course to you, or at least try…

We start off facing a bridge but are a fair distance away from it, the race starts! Everyone battles to be the first to get to the bridge because from the bridge pumpkins have been dropped in to the river, you have to scoop a pumpkin out of the water before passing under the bridge. Harder then it sounds! After getting your pumpkin you complete a 1000m Y-shaped turn, go back under the bridge, do a loop around a buoy then beach your boat, one person gets out, takes their paddle with them, balances a cup of juice on the end of the paddle and runs/walks from Spot A to Spot B without spilling. Once they get to Spot B they are given a bag of cranberries. Then they run back to the boat, hop on in and you are off! We then do another loop around the buoy, go back under the bridge and paddle till we cross the finish line. The entire length of the race is (I believe) 3000m…I’m always a little unsure about race lengths in this festival. Suffice to say, this race is long, and oh so much fun! Because there are turns during the races at this festival, and we are all in canoes instead of dragon boats, there are crashes on the water, boats getting tipped, general mayhem and minor levels of violence, but all in good fun! 😀

The pumpkin scooped outta the river after being dropped from a bridge. This pumpkin has had quite the adventure!

The pumpkin scooped outta the river after being dropped from a bridge. This pumpkin has had quite the adventure!

By 7pm Saturday night I was exhausted lol A long day racing, with longer than normal race lengths, all I wanted was my bed. 😛 I heated my muscles a bit when I got home since they were already seizing a bit then crawled in to bed, oh man that felt good lol. Sunday though I woke up for work and did not feel well. 😦 I thought it was just cause of being tired from the day before but alas, I was wrong. I seem to have caught some sort of bug, I’m not sure what it is. I had no appetite all day Sunday but ate breakfast and lunch when at work cause I kept thinking if I don’t eat I’ll be hungry when I no longer am on break and then I’ll be screwed. When I got home from work I had a nap, a freakishly long nap, started at 3:30p and lasted till about 8pm! Who does that?! I got up for a bit, had tea and toast (my cure for pretty much everything), felt sicker because of it and went back to bed. Slept till I had to be up for work at 5:20am Monday…that is a lot of sleep! Despite all that sleep I spent Monday tired and not hungry and headachey and just not feeling well. My main thought during all that? “Crap! No Thanksgiving pizza for me if  feel like this! Sadness!” I was really looking forward to my pizza but just the thought of food made me feel sick, let alone having to actually eat it, ugh.

Luckily today was a day off, yay! I let myself sleep till my body chose to wake up, which anybody who knows me knows that means I slept in lol helped a friend for a tiny bit of time with his move then spent the rest of the day alternating between staring like a zombie at the tv and dozing off in my living room chair while attempting to get fluids in me by sipping ginger ale and water. I know I am unwell when I don’t drink endless cups of tea! I’ve only had two cups today, and the second one I didn’t really want, I just felt weird not having drunk a lot of tea so I made it and forced myself to drink it cause duuude, you can’t waste tea! 😉

I’m hoping tomorrow I’ll be better, I don’t want to waste my days off not having the energy to do anything!

Despite catching whatever the heck it is I caught I had a good weekend. Any weekend I am on the water racing is a good weekend in my world. 🙂  Saturday night, as I was moving slowly around my apartment because my muscles were already letting me know just how sore they were from the day I realized something I was thankful for, which seemed pretty well timed considering it was Thanksgiving weekend.

I am so thankful that I am physically able to take part in the various activities I take part in. I may bitch because muscles hurt, or I’m lazy and don’t want to go to the gym or it’s cold on the water but I am well aware not everyone can take part in dragon boating, or hitting up the gym, or zumba, or boxing, or hiking or any of the other stuff I do because of physical limitations. I had a long amount of time where I was one of those people. I couldn’t walk. My knee was messed up too badly, my entire left leg was useless. I used to have dreams of being able to walk again, that was it, just walk, without my crutches or a cane, it seemed like it was never going to happen. Now I run, I hike, I do squats, I dragon boat, I dance, I snowshoe, I do whatever I want. And while everyday I take a moment to be grateful for being able to walk I don’t think I ever really took a moment to be consciously grateful for being able to do all the other activities I do. I forgot. I took for granted that I could do all these things.

But not Saturday.

Saturday, when both my knees were barely working because of how badly bruised they got from the boat, when my butt, my back, my shoulders and my arms were all in intense pain and any movement caused me to wince and swear, when stretching made things pop in my back, that is when I had a moment of clarity. That is when I realized I am lucky beyond belief that I was able to be feeling that pain. I am so grateful my body works as well as it does. I am so Thankful I have a loving family and amazing friends who stuck by me while I was injured and who cheer me on now that I am able to be active again.

I will make sure I don’t forget, just like I don’t forget to be grateful I can walk. 🙂

5km…But Not Really

9 Oct

I participated in the Run For the Cure this past Sunday. It is a 5km run/1km walk to raise money for breast cancer research.

Here is a link to the site:

http://www.runforthecure.com/site/PageServer?pagename=run_homepage_13

$27 million was raised nationally at this year’s Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure, how amazing is that?! 😀

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCz–fWSGl8

There are runs all over the country and while I can’t speak for the runs in other locations I can tell you the one I went to is fun! fun! fun! 😀

It’s only a 5km run so nothing impressive to brag about, especially since so many of the blogs I read that are by people who are also working to get into better shape show they are training and running full marathons – that’s 42 km! (26.2 miles) How is that even possible?! *shakes head in wonder*

While at this run I saw:

– multiple dogs wearing pink tutus

– lots of pink feather boas, pink wigs, basically pink everything lol

– a cheerleading squad along the route chanting we are “G-R-E-A-T…Grrrreat!”

– men, women and children all coming together to support a totally worthy cause

I would have liked to attempt running the entire route but I was with a friend and we ended up alternating between jogging and walking…mostly walking. Ah well. I used my Runtastic App to track us so we’d know exactly how long we took and realized that not only would it track our speed but it would map the route we took so I can go back another day and run the route again, see if I can do it. Yay!

When we were done I took a look to see our time and discovered that the route was actually only 3.49km, I feel jipped. 😦 I’m not sure how a route that is officially supposed to be 5km measured out at only 3.49km, not like we missed a turn somewhere…The shorter distance makes me want to redo the route even more so I can measure it again, see if it was a glitch with my App that time, I can’t think of what else it would be…

I know this run doesn’t have the seriousness of a full marathon, it is meant to be a stress free enjoyable experience. There is no pressure to be first (that I was aware of anyways), there isn’t even a big clock at the end to tell you how long you were (there was two years ago when I participated, but not this year). I can’t say for sure how this run compares to a full marathon since I have never been in one of those but I know if you are looking for an event that involves getting out, having fun, raising money for a good cause and being active this is a good one to start with.

Participating in this has made me think that maybe I could train to do a longer run, not a full marathon, lets not go crazy or anything, but maybe a half marathon? Or a quarter marathon, is there such a thing? I feel that if there isn’t there should be! 😉 lol

And in a move that is sure to go down in blogging history (dramatic much? lol) I, for the first time ev-ah!  am putting a pic of me in a post…well, of a side of my face anyways lol to show you the face painting I had done before the run started. I enjoyed having it but I had to go to work after the run and lemme tell ya, gold glitter does not like to come off my face with ease! I was glittery the whole rest of the day *rolls eyes* lol

Yes it is my face, horrendously close up, eek! But how else can I show off the face painting?

8km, 2hrs

19 Sep

I did a hike yesterday that I oh so enjoyed! I wish I had taken some pictures of the beautiful scenery for here but I was using this app called Runtastic to track my hike and started with less then half my phone battery life left and I had doubt that the battery would last if I also took pics lol. Next time I will make sure the phone is fully charged, promise! 🙂

I was soooo excited for this hike, had been wanting to do it since before I went to Los Angeles but I just never had the time…or thought I didn’t!

All the Provincial Park info said the 8km hike that I was planning would have a total time of 4 hours. Now, I don’t know how they calculated the time it would take, I assume that takes in to account terrain, averages from other hikers and a bunch of other stuff I don’t generally think about lol. I took the Park’s information as fact and that is why I hadn’t gotten around to doing this hike yet because I had to make sure I had minimum 4 hours available and that I started early enough in the day I wasn’t risking getting caught in the woods after dark.

Now, you may be thinking I am being overly dramatic about being in the woods when it is dark because how much wilderness could it possibly be? Lemme tell ya, this is Canada, there is a lot of wilderness and the head of the trail is full of info for keeping the bears etc away and all the gear you are supposed to take with you “just in case”…I took almost none of the gear cause that’s just how I roll 😉 lol I took two bottles of water, a Clif Bar, ID, chapstick, sunscreen…that’s about it. I mean come on, how much do you really need to survive for 4 hours? Not that much! And if I was in there for longer then the 4 hours I was most likely in some sort of trouble and that extra gear well, would be helpful but I’d be holding out for a rescue team lol 😛

The trail started off flat and easy then I took a turn that leads to a higher intensity trail…who wants easy? Pfft! Not I! 😛 The majority of my hike was spent alternating between steep inclines and windy smaller inclines…if that makes any sense? I lost the trail in a minor way once or twice and in a serious way only once. For me that is pretty good because my sense of direction is generally sucky and not like there are that many markers in the forest lol trees all look the same!

Sad to say I encountered no wildlife…although, since I had none of the gear meant to help me in animal scenarios I guess that’s a good thing? lol Less interesting but good. 🙂

During the 7th km I tripped and scraped up my right knee and left hand, sigh. My right knee now looks like it belongs to a 12 year old tomboy, soooo not attractive! Thank goodness my body clots well lol The knee itself isn’t as bruised as I thought it would be but I’m in that unfortunate phase of healing where pants hurt cause of the friction but wearing a dress or skirt means showing off an ugly knee and having to repeatedly explain what happened. I’m not happy with either of those options but not much I can do about it *rolls eyes*

Left side is in the car right after the hike. Right side is the day after. And yes, I am just that pale! :P

Left side is in the car right after the hike. Right side is the day after. And yes, I am just that pale! 😛

Back to the timing of the hike, like I had mentioned above, all official information I had for this hike said it would take 4 hours. That seemed like a long time for 8km but I figured if the terrain was hard enough that could make sense, right?

Well here is a picture of my results from my Runtastic App…

Screenshot of my Runtastic App

Screenshot of my Runtastic App

I did 8.62km in 1 hour and 57 minutes…a much more respectable time but not at all what I expected! Sooooo, perhaps the people who came up with the timing for the hike went along the trail backwards? How else could I cut the time in half? I double checked the info at the head of the trail, thinking maybe I read the time needed to complete the hike incorrectly but I didn’t, it really said 4 hours. I just don’t get it…My dad suggested most people take the trail at a slower pace and aren’t zipping along trying to be the fastest to complete the trail lol I pointed out I wasn’t trying to be the fastest, just get a good workout (which I did)…and I suppose other people might use the trail for a more social outing but I don’t think so. The easy part of the trail sure! I saw people there with dogs, walking at a slower pace while talking with whomever they were with but the harder trail? I saw one other person on it the entire time and she was like me, hiking gear, obviously working out, not lingering anywhere…I guess this will be one of those things I remain confused about but hey, who doesn’t like having some mystery in their life? 😉 lol

All in all I really enjoyed the hike, am very glad I finally got around to doing it. Now that I know it only takes two hours I have hope I will be able to hike it again before we lose our nice weather. I won’t hike it in the winter because parts of the trail were already partially washed out when I went yesterday from the rain we had earlier in the week. I had a couple times I detoured around the trail to avoid walking through water…wet feet is so not a thing I enjoy 😛

Vacation!

29 Aug

I went on vacation *happy dance* I went on vacation *butt wiggle* I went on vacation! *huge grin*

…and now I’m back, sigh.

It’s not that I don’t like my life, I like my friends, my cat, my job, my suv, my city, my weather patterns, my currency and lots of other things buuuuuuut I wish I could have stayed *bigger sigh*

I was in Los Angeles and had a greeeeeat time! I was hanging out with my friend KG for ten days and the only way it could have been better was if I could have smuggled my cat in to the country with me and stayed…well, been employed there and had my suv and stayed…not that I am demanding or anything lol

Instead of blathering on about things I did I figure I’ll just show you some pics instead sooooo prepare for the modern day vacation picture slide show…

Ready?

Obviously I have pictures with my friends and myself in them but since I don’t put images of myself or my friends on this blog I couldn’t put them up. Which is a tad sad cause I have one of me battling (and winning!) with Darth Vader, and one of my hands in Sylvester Stallone’s hand prints and lots others but these will have to do. 🙂

I made a whole bunch of new friends when in LA and I miss getting to hang with them. Luckily it is the era of social networking so I have them on facebook and *crossing fingers* I will get to see them again before they forget who I am! lol 😛

Almost Within Our Grasp

12 Jul

I put off writing this because I didn’t want it to turn in to a rant, or a post with a lot of swearing lol Last weekend my dragon boat team raced in Nanaimo, BC. It was my first time racing in that particular festival, also my first time visiting Nanaimo. The festival was great (for the most part), and while I didn’t see much of the city the area I was in seemed to be filled with the nicest people ever! Seriously. Ever! 🙂

the boats all tied up waiting for race day

the boats all tied up waiting for race day

Since Nanaimo is on Vancouver Island we all went over at varying times Friday. I had the day off, as did some others, so we went on the mid day ferry and had lots of time to explore the race set up, bits of the city, and take the littlest boat ever to Protection Island where we ate at a floating pub called The Dinghy Dock Pub…oh, and drank, there was definite drinking involved lol 😉

Saturday our first race was early, ugh, we had a great race! Came in second place, with a time of 2:09 (I can’t remember the milliseconds, oops!). The water conditions were nothing like what I am used to. There were water planes landing alongside the race lanes plus a high level of wind plus in general just choppier waters so the waters were nowhere near as calm as what I practice and usually race in. Despite being in the outside lane (which means being farthest away from the race master and unable to hear what he was saying, and closest to the landing planes) we rocked it! 😀 It was definitely a race to be proud of, and we were!

The wind picked up so much by lunchtime that the second set of races for the day had to be cancelled due to safety concerns, sucky! I mean, we all understood but at the same time we reeeeeally wanted to race, we had such great momentum built up from that first race ya know?

We ended up hanging by the pool at the hotel then almost all of us went to Protection Island for visit number 2 at The Dinghy Dock Pub…to be fair, for most of them this was their first visit there lol. After dinner we went back to the hotel where we took part in a Jell-o shooter contest, oh and played Battleshots (think of the game Battleship, only the boats are large enough to hold shot glasses…wait for the awesomeness of this game to fully sink in to your head, yup, there ya go, *nods* 😉 ). Basically, general partying ensued.

Battleshots! Girls vs Guys, and oh yah! Girls won! wOOt! :)

Battleshots! Girls vs Guys, and oh yah! Girls won! wOOt! 🙂

Hey what can I say, dragon boaters practice hard, race hard, and party hard! lol

Sunday…hmm…Sunday is where the not so great part of the festival happened…

Our first race on Sunday was amazing! So great! We shaved off a second from our race time, we came in at 2:08, second place, this meant dun-dun-dunnnn we qualified for the medal races in Diamond Division! Oh yah babeeeee! 😀

Now, two of our paddlers had to leave early so we found two subs to take their places. This, for anybody who doesn’t know dragon boating, is normal practice. I have known boats at race festivals who had so many paddlers missing that over half the boat was filled with subs from higher ranking teams and they won medals because they basically stacked their boat. We were not looking to stack the boat, we were just two short, and are used to being in festivals where you can borrow paddlers. Our captain got two paddlers from a lower ranking team and voila we were covered!

Welllll, not so much, sigh. A person who I will do my best to not call a mean name decided to file an official complaint against our team for having people in our boat who were not on the roster. We didn’t know this till after we raced tho so picture this…We race our final race of the day, this is for the medal, everything counts! We gave it everything we had, we paddled hard, we came in third place, bronze! We won bronze! We were neck and neck with the boat that came in second place, we were apart by mere milliseconds! Milliseconds! Epic! We knew we won the bronze medal so we are cheering, full of adrenaline, totally stoked as we pull in to the dock, and that is where it ended…an official wouldn’t let us out of our boat, came over, explained about the complaint, blathered on about people in our boat who weren’t on the roster, and for me anyways, just kept talking while I sat stunned, soaking in what he was saying, wanting to shake my head and yell no and stomp my feet and cry, I knew the medal was gone, all that work, all those practices, putting everything we had in to that final race, and none of it mattered because one person was able to yank it away.

We were allowed to argue our side, our captain and our caller went and spoke with some of the officials while the rest of us stood in a group discussing, worrying, plotting revenge…in the end it didn’t matter. Turns out there was a rule for this festival about who can sub in for teams and we accidentally got subs who were not allowed. If the complaint hadn’t been lodged the officials would not have punished us, people had been getting subs for their teams all festival, it is one of those technicalities that is over looked by officials buuuuut if someone complains then the officials have to investigate and enforce the rules. They took our medal and get this, it got given to the team that had the lady on it that filed the complaint!…no bias there huh? What makes it worse is they were ridiculously slow in that race,  6 seconds behind us! Fyi, 6 seconds in a dragon boat race is huuuuge! It’d be one thing if it had been a close race, but we were so obviously better than them and yet, they got our medal! Grr!

The officials didn’t completely disqualify us, even though we didn’t get our medal we didn’t lose our placement within the festival, we ranked 11th out of 80 teams which is awesome! We just don’t have the medal to show off to people…I’m trying to not let this bother me overly much…

What gets me is, how can they be proud of their bronze medal? They didn’t earn it, they don’t have a race time that is deserving of it, they got it by complaining…I wouldn’t want a medal gotten that way. If I had gotten a medal that way I wouldn’t be telling anybody about it because I wouldn’t have earned it, why would anybody want a medal they didn’t earn?? *confused face*

After all that happened, not gonna lie, put a bit of a downer on the rest of the day, we went out to a pub (not the floating one) for dinner as a team, played some pool, basically we were trying to force ourselves to start putting the whole thing behind us, which I think was a good way to handle it. If we had all just gone our separate ways we’d all of individually stewed about it, this way, we talked about it a bit, decided how we would get revenge, and then helped distract each other from what happened. Team work! lol

Something kinda awesome happened on the ferry ride back to the mainland…a lady from a team I’ve never heard of, a lady who didn’t know us, had heard what happened, she came over to the group of us that were travelling back on that particular ferry together and she said she was impressed with how well we were handling things, she said it is was unfortunate that some people feel the need to be like “that lady who complained”, and said some other stuff about her being a poor sport an stuff. It felt good knowing that people who don’t even know our team, but who heard the story, think what happened was crap.

We almost had a medal, we were so close we could taste it, I swear I could already feel it hanging around my neck, but then, in a blink of an eye, it was gone. 😦 Even though it was taken away, I still feel as if we earned it. We had a race time that shows we earned it, and despite the disgrace of being stripped of our medal I am proud.

Proud of my team for racing so well that entire weekend.

Proud of my team for having race times that qualified us to race for medals.

Proud of my team for winning the Bronze medal in the Diamond Division (that is the second highest division in that festival).

Proud of how well we handled the drama of the medal being stripped.

Most of all, I am proud that since that festival we have had strong, solid practices, we have worked hard, we will work even harder next week, and then we will race in our next festival and we will be awesome! We will have fun! We will race hard! We will race smart! We will be a team to be reckoned with! (insert warrior cry here!) 😀

And that lady? She will be nothing to us but a story, a person to mock and pity because she is so unhappy in her life she has to go out of her way to try to ruin things for others. But ya know what? She didn’t ruin things. We are even more united as a team now, we are stronger, we have each others backs and what does she have? A medal that she can’t even feel proud of.

Happy Canada Day!

Happy 146th Birthday Canada! In honour of the day I thought I’d compile a list of things you probably didn’t know about my wonderful country, enjoy! 🙂

Pretend I'm singing the anthem right now...and standing! lol

(13) 5 Pin bowling? Oh yeah, invented by T.E. Ryan of Toronto in 1909.

Here are a couple videos that showcase our understated Canadian pride…I apologize for the distinctly country feel of the first one…

Yes, we show our pride in beer commercials, don’t judge! 😛

This one isn’t a song, and is super old, but I still think it is funny…

This one is old, from right before the 2010 Winter Olympics, and not a music video, but filled with stuff even I didn’t know, and I’ve been googling things about Canada all day! lol

Lookin' pretty good for 146 years old!

New Gear!

26 Jun

I am a girl, this means I love to shop! Don’t go saying I am being sexist, it’s practically written in to my DNA, just like my love of chocolate and ice cream. 😛

Here’s where I veer a bit off the so called “normal” girl path. Sure, I get happy buying fun things to wear but I get waaaaay psyched when buying new workout gear! I think because work out gear is usually fairly pricey, I can’t afford to buy it all that often, and really, how often do you neeeeed to buy it? No point in buying a new pair of runners when the ones you have are still in good shape. No point in buying more work out clothes when you have enough to get you through the week and they still fit. No point in buying more work out equipment when you have nowhere to put it and again, no money to be able to afford it lol.

Which means buying new gear, any type of new gear is a major treat in my world, and something I really look forward to!

Today I got to buy shoes, *happy girly sigh* and yes, that is pluralized. Shoooooooes! 😀

The first pair look like…

New Dragon Boat shoes!

New Dragon Boat shoes!

They are strictly for dragon boating, suuuuuper strictly! I get to break em in tomorrow at practice and am so looking forward to it!

I have been wanting new shoes for dragon boating all season but couldn’t justify the expense. In the cold months I wear an old pair of converse sneakers that take forever to dry but are old so I sacrifice them to the nasty water and in the warmer months I wear flip flops from WalMart that cost a whopping $3. I figure if I lose them to the water no big loss money wise. The flip flops aren’t great to wear during warm up but I’ve been able to make em work. That all ended yesterday!

We have upped the intensity of our warm ups (in addition to some other changes) in an effort to shave a couple seconds off our race times. (We came in fourth in our division at the big dragon boat festival this past weekend…sooooooo close! arg!) so now part of our warm up is running. That’s right. Running. ugh. Like I don’t do that enough as is I now have to run in a pack before hopping on to the boat. *rolls eyes* Could be worse though, right? And hey, I’m totally all in when it comes to doing my part for helping our team get a better time…even if I do bitch a bit lol

Thing is, I have tried running in my flip flops, it doesn’t go well which means I need an actual shoe. I took my normal work out runners yesterday but between finishing warm up and going to the boat there isn’t enough time to put my runners in to a locker and no way do I want them exposed to the nasty water that splashes over the side of the boat (although they did come in the boat yesterday) which led me to shoe shopping! Gotta love the wind-ey logic that got me in to the store don’t ya? 😉

The shoes are made by Skechers, are all mesh which means quick dry, wOOt! and the bottoms have a nice good grip which hopefully will do its job when I am running…tomorrow will tell! 🙂

The second pair were not an intended purchase, I swear I only meant to look, maaaaaybe try on but not buy! Buuuut, I am weak, and I bought, eek! *hangs head in shame*

The second pair look like…

My new running shoes! Treadmill here I come!

My new running shoes! Treadmill here I come!

These shoes are made by Adidas, and are meant for running, indoor treadmill running to be specific. To be fair, I am sure they would be perfectly fine running on a smooth trail but the most outside wear they will get will be when I am walking/running to the gym and back lol. They have these holes on the side of the tread that allow for ventilation that will apparently help my feet stay cool, I’ll reserve judgement on that till I actually use them lol.

I have needed new running shoes for a while, mine have had stress lines on the tread for ages which means they are dead but going back to the whole money thing, I couldn’t afford a new pair so I’ve been making do with my old ones. These were on sale and honestly, once I tried them on I was screwed, I was bouncing around the store in them and abso fell in love with them. I forgot how great new runners feel!

I really wanted to take them directly to the gym to give em a go on the treadmill but my knee has been killing me all day and since it was hurting just to walk running was not in the cards today, sigh. But hey, there is always tomorrow! 🙂

So there we have it, my new shoes, both lovely pairs, I can’t wait to put them to the test! 😀

What’s In My Head
