The Evolution of Shopping

12 Apr

I wrote a little while ago about how my shopping experience went when I had to go to Bosley’s to buy cat food. It was odd, but not in an unmanageable way.

This past Thursday I went to Safeway and experienced the next step in the evolution of grocery shopping. The week prior I was all icked out when I went to that Safeway because people weren’t social distancing within the store, it seemed crowded, and I was uncomfortable enough that I left before getting everything I needed.

This past Thursday I went back and oh how things have changed!

First there was the line up to get in…

April 11 2020

I don’t know why I was surprised by the line-up, I’d be hearing all week about stores having lines, I guess I just didn’t think this Safeway would since it didn’t have one a week prior. It was a nice spring evening and the line moved fairly quickly. There isn’t a sign saying how many people are allowed in the store, just that a “limited number” of customers are allowed in, which makes me wonder how the guard at the door knows when to let people in and when to make them wait.

You might be thinking he lets people inside when people inside the shop come out but no, that wasn’t always the case. I’ve decided to not think about it too much, like any of us need another thing to stress about?

Once inside I eventually noticed the aisles are all one way, like in Ikea. Arrows on the ground showing which way to walk as well as hanging on the signs at the start of each aisle. I didn’t notice at first, so I may have gone the wrong direction in an aisle or two, in my defence, I am not the only one who did that!

The shelves were looking a little sad. The combination of a sale and it being later in the day meant a lot of stuff was gone. I found it interesting that when I noticed there was only a small amount of a product left I would think about buying it, even if it was something I don’t normally buy. Like the baked beans. I haven’t bought those in years but seeing the shelves so low in stock made me wonder if I should. Does everybody else know a secret I don’t about what food I should be buying right now?

Luckily I came to my senses and stuck with buying my normal food items. No point in stocking up on things I don’t eat.

I should have taken a picture of the produce, so many things were moldy, or wrinkled and almost no good anymore. Isn’t it better to have no produce for sale than produce gone bad? The quality of the produce has me buying more and more frozen fruit and veg…which was another area that was scarily low on stock.

The internet is exploding with people baking bread, which ok, I guess if you’re in self-isolation and have time to kill why not? One of the aisles had yeast for sale and it was packaged like this…

April 11 2020 b

I don’t know if that is a normal price for yeast but I’m fairly certain that is not the normal packaging for the yeast. I admit, I bought some, not because I have some overwhelming desire to bake bread but because the bread section was scarily low in stock, I bought one of the last loaves. Maybe my baking bread will have to become a thing, I hope not, but better to be prepared, right?

Eggs were still out of stock, sigh, but I was able to find vanilla for a friend who couldn’t find any when she was shopping. That turned out well because when she was shopping today she found eggs for me, yay!

This might be the new way of shopping, see what you can find not only for you but your friends, and they will do the same, and everyone will swap items. I figure if we combine what the grocery store near me has, and what the grocery store near my friend has, we can almost always find the items we want. It is an odd system but it seems to be working for us so far.

Something I noticed in the store are people being much better at social distancing while inside. Whether it is because the aisles are one way only, or because there are only so many of us inside at a time, or we are all scared of being near someone and getting sick, there was a decent amount of space between people. If I needed something and a person was in the same area I’d stand back and wait until they moved on before I reached for what I wanted, and others did the same. It made me feel a bit rushed in having to pick items from the shelves but I’d rather be a bit rushed because I know someone is waiting their turn than have that person come up beside me.

We are all going to become this cat…

A Safeway Sandwich

28 Jun

The other day I had a small amount of time to grab something to eat so I stopped at Safeway and did that whole build your own sandwich deal…yeah…so not worth it.

I’ve never gotten a sandwich from there but since my options were one of the pre-packaged sandwiches, a freshly made to order sandwich, or my going to Subway, I thought this was a healthy choice.

The list of options you can pick from is out of date so the first three types of bread I asked for I was told I couldn’t have because they don’t use that bread anymore. Okaaaaay…annoying but fine. Then the guy couldn’t tell me how much my sandwich was going to cost because it depended what meat I got, I told him I wanted turkey and he was still unable to tell me how much it was going to cost. sigh. Then when he put the turkey on the bread it only covered half the bread! The meat is pre-portioned to make sure they only put a certain amount on the sandwiches but the portioned out amounts are freakishly small, so I asked for double meat. Oh, and when I asked how much it would cost for double the turkey he said it depended on how much the turkey cost…but he didn’t follow that up with how much the turkey costs, he just ended the sentence like that lol

I was starting to wonder just how much this sandwich was going to cost me. At this point I didn’t really want it anymore, it was becoming more effort than it was worth, but not like I could walk out half way through the sandwich making process. *rolls eyes*

The rest of the sandwich had mustard, light mayo, spinach, cucumber, tomato, red onion, and one slice of cheddar cheese. a fairly classic combo.

I was doing the really classy thing of sitting in my car and eating the sandwich, I would have eaten it while driving but they didn’t cut it so it was too large for me to hold and eat, while driving.

The first bite was pretty much all bread and that kinda set the tone for the rest of the sandwich, the tone being I was eating stale bread. I know, I know, first world problems! But c’mon, I paid for this freshly made sandwich and they can’t even be bothered to put it on bread that isn’t stale? Not cool Safeway.

In the end the bread was inedible, I ended up opening the sandwich up and eating the meat, cheese, and veg, then threw the bread away. So, yay on saving calories! But boo on paying for something that turned out to be a waste of money.

I should’ve just gone to Subway. ๐Ÿ˜›

My New Weapon

25 Jan

I have a new weapon of mass destruction!…or as you may call it, a new kitchen knife. ๐Ÿ˜›

Safeway has been running this promotion where every $10 you spend you get a sticker, if you save enough stickers you get a knife. Depending on how many stickers you save up will decide which of the knives you can choose from.

These are your choices…

When the promotion started I decided if I was going to try to get enough stickers to get a knife then I was going to go for the most expensive knife on the list lol I also realized very early on there was almost no way in hell I’d be able to save enough stickers for the knife I wanted as it needed 150 stickers. That’s a lot of money!

Luckily my mom wasn’t collecting the stickers so she saved the ones she earned and gave them to me. With her contribution to my collection I actually managed to get enough stickers to earn the Chef’s Knife. ๐Ÿ™‚

So many stickers!

So many stickers!

It’s not like I actually need a fancy new kitchen knife, my cooking doesn’t warrant impressive tools lol but if I was spending the money anyways I might as well try for a knife that is out of my price range, right? Right!

If I had wanted I could have used my 150 stickers to go towards a knife sharpener or a knife block. I would have had to pay an additional amount for either of those items but I didn’t really want either of them so no temptation there, shrug.

So since I know you are all just dying to see it, here is my new kitchen knife…

According to the packaging it is a German Five Star Zwilling Knife. It is stainless steel, ice hardened, forged from one piece, has a hand guard and has a handle made of synthetic material. None of that really means anything to me but maybe it does to you? ๐Ÿ™‚

I have absolutely no idea what I am going to use the knife for, I don’t do a lot of chopping or cutting but maybe now I will, if only to use this fancy-dancy knife lol ๐Ÿ˜› Look out veggies and meat, here I come! (insert evil laugh here)

No Longer Am I That Girl, sigh.

12 Dec

So, I am no longer the girl who can say “I have lost 21.6 pounds so far” nope, that’s not me. And why is that not me? Cause I hadย a week of either eating way too many points or way not enough points and I gained weight…yeah, you read that right…I gained.ย ย ย ๐Ÿ˜ฆ With the weight I gained this week I have now only lost 20.8 pounds total. And yeah I know, I shouldn’t say “only” but that’s how it feels, like an only. sigh.

Least I didn’t gain so much I have a total lost under 20 pounds cause that would just be an epic fail and worth way more then 1 sad face emoticon.

This weekend has been an odd one. Friday was partying with friends to celebrate a bday, I drank water all night cause I was driving and didn’t want to deal with figuring out the points involved in drinking, lol. Go figure, I am way sober cause I don’t want to have to figure out the points for a drink, *rolls eyes*, sometimes I am definitely special. lol. Saturday was chillin, gift wrapping, and nannying for two highly evil demonic children. I am not even kidding about the demonic…altho maybe it’s more like psychotic. shrug. Either way, I am never going back to that house again! The oldest of the two boys threatened to hit me with a broom, a broom! WTF?!?! Grr. Then today was sleeping in, shopping, errands, and eventually home to have a relaxed dinner and cup of tea. Ahhhh, the best part of the weekend! lol.

I’m not sure why but the past couple days I just wanna eat, sigh, not huge meals or anything, I just want to snack. shrug. I bought some dark chocolate peanut M&M’s whenย I was out shopping – I couldn’t seem to help it, but I haven’t cracked them open yet so least that’s something. sigh. I keep wanting to just grab a nibble of this or a bite of that – you get the idea…it’s damn annoying! What’s worse is I am not even hungry but if someone put some kind of nibbly anywhere near me right now I’d more then likely nibble, willpower be damned! lol

Today I ate:

1 cup cooked oatmeal = 2 points

3 tbls maple syrup = 2 points

3 tsp brown sugar =ย 1 point

2 pieces toast = 2 points

1 tbsl light peanut butter = 2 points

1 werther’s chocolate = 1 point

6 chicken strips = 8 points

mixed cooked veggies = 0 points

2 tbls honey mustard sauce = 1 point

1 thinsations yogurt covered pretzels = 2 points

Total points eaten is 21. ๐Ÿ™‚

The chicken strips are a new and yummy find. ๐Ÿ™‚ They are from Safeway and are the Safeway Eating Right brand, 3 strips = 4 points. Now, normally I would only eat 3 of them at a time, along with some veggies but I had a lot of points left over by the time I was making dinner and I was quite hungry so I figured I’d eat 6 and see how it went. lol. They are quite good. They are not deep fried or trans fatty or any of that stuff. So…kinda healthy chicken strips…well, the healthiest you’ll ever get I s’pose. Normally I could never afford them, they are like $12 for a box! But my parents rock and sent me a gift card for Safeway so I bought the strips when doing my normal grocery shopping. ๐Ÿ™‚ I figure they are a good investment since there are like 8 servings in a box, so 8 meals for $12, that’s good isn’t it? I am also trying to buy things that will last in the freezer till I get back from my christmas vacation – I will be crazed broke when I get back after christmas so I am planning ahead for that and buying things I can eat then, so frozen stuff, canned stuff…ya know, non perishable stuff.ย  Ah the joys of planning ahead, lol. ๐Ÿ˜€
