Yoga Fail

14 Apr

The plan.

There’s always a plan right?

The plan was to get up and go to morning yoga at my gym.

The reality was the alarm made noise, I didn’t even pretend to hit snooze, just turned it off, rolled over and went back to sleep.

Oops? πŸ˜‰

That meant to get my workout in for the day I’d have to fit it in after work, which is fine, it is when I prefer to workout. Only catch is I work until 9pm Saturdays and I start at 7am Sundays, so usually after work on a Saturday I really live it up by coming back to my place, showering, and watching YouTube or Netflix for a bit until I go to bed.

Not tonight though, no way was I missing a workout on the third day of this challenge!

Situations like this though are exactly why I decided to not be super strict about my definition of a workout, because instead of going to the gym I did a body weight (and ok I used a couple actual weights) workout in my living room.

The cat, in case you were wondering, was not impressed.

I could have done a workout dvd, and probably will at some point, but I wanted to see what I could come up with on my own. It isn’t exciting, but hopefully it was enough to count…I did get sweaty, not been at the gym killing it sweaty, but a light ladylike glow, so I’m going to pretend that means I accomplished something lol

My little circuit consisted of:

  • jumping jacks
  • squats
  • mountain climbers
  • russian twists (with my medicine ball)
  • push-ups
  • bicycle crunches
  • plank
  • overhead press (with dumbbells)
  • flys (with dumbbells)
  • and this thing I don’t know the name of, I lay on the ground, holding a dumbbell or kettle bell, arms straight above me (think right over my face), then I lower my arms while keeping them straight till the weight hits the floor above my head, stretching my arms as far as they will go. I don’t know what is it called but I love that one, you can really feel muscles engaging.

So yeah, that was my circuit, nothing fancy. I did a minute of each with no rest in between then a minute rest after the circuit was done. I did it three times, probably should have done a fourth but ya live an learn. I’ll know to do a fourth next time.

After that was done I cleaned the apartment, seriously, can my Saturday nights get anymore exciting? πŸ˜‰

I have a friend stopping by tomorrow and I wanted the place to be tidy for her. She is one of those people whose place is always gorgeous so the least I can do is make my little basement suite clean. It’ll never be gorgeous, but clean counts for something, in my books anyways lol

I may not have made the yoga class and stuck to plan that way but I still managed something resembling a workout, meaning Day 3 (or Day 42) is in the bag! πŸ˜€

Of the two of us, the cat is the only one getting some yoga in lol

Pie, Yoga, Dinner and a Movie

24 Jun

Wednesday, oh Wednesday, such a great day this week, I wish more of my days were like it. πŸ™‚

I went over to a friend’s place where we made Strawberry Rhubarb pie…from scratch cause ya know, that’s how we roll. πŸ˜‰ That and homemade pie is the best! Mmm!

She made the filling and I made the crust and I gotta say, they both turned out quite well. πŸ™‚

While the dough was chilling in the fridge the two of us went and did some yoga, she has a Jillian Michael’s yoga workout which nearly killed me lol I figured it was going to help me earn a slice of the pie though so ya know, goals. πŸ™‚

I started making lattices on the pies (we made three pies in total) while she went and picked up one of her kids, once everyone was under the roof I went and showered (I’m tellin ya that yoga workout makes ya sweat, ugh) and when I got back to the kitchen she had magically morphed it from a temporary bakery to a proper kitchen and dinner was well on its way. Something you need to know is she is a Chef -notice the capital C? Which means no silly little dinner is being made in her kitchen, she only makes awesome meals that I love eating but have no idea how to make lol

Official Chef hands doing Official Chef type stuff!

I don’t know why I took this picture as such a stupid angle, it is not doing the meal justice at all!

There is wheat barley, sauteed veggies (specifically mushrooms, baby tomatoes and peas) then salmon (perfectly cooked in case you were wondering) with grated white radish (there is a fancy, proper name for the radish but I can’t remember it) and of course a delicious sauce that had miso paste, two different kinds of mustard, honey and I think something else in it…I don’t have enough descriptive words to describe how great this meal was. She got the inspiration from the website http://www.cookswithcocktails.com The dish is a copy of a meal from the Cactus Club but I’d bet money my friend’s version is better than the one in the restaurant. πŸ˜€

After dinner there was no time for eating pie because we were off to go see Finding Dory, and all I can say about baby Dory is awwwwww sooooo cute! And before you think we were two weirdo adults going to see a kids movie we had one kid and two teenagers with us, so basically they were our camouflage lol πŸ˜‰ The movie is totally worth the price of the ticket but I’d skip paying for 3D if I was you.

baby dory

Possibly even cuter than Nemo!

Being all tryna-lose-weight-girl that I am I packed snacks for the theatre…yes, I have become that person. Buuuuut I ended up buying some frozen yoghurt that I got topped with fruit, I haven’t been able to figure out the nutritional information yet so I kinda guessed when tracking. Oops?

Movie finished and back to the pies…er, I mean, her house, we went! The draw of going back wasn’t at all the pies, nope, of course not! πŸ˜‰ We served them with a choice of vanilla ice cream or Cool Whip, turns out her kids had never had Cool Whip! The poor deprived souls, such a sad existence, *sad sigh*, so luckily I remedied that! teehee…I am not always a good influence πŸ˜›

And yeah, that was my Wednesday. I guess all-in-all a simple day but it was fun, and filled with people I like being around, and baking and eating and just enjoyable times. We should all have more days like that. πŸ™‚

Volunteer for Yoga

29 May

A little over three years ago I signed up for 30 days of unlimited Bikram Yoga. I don’t remember why I did it, there must have been a promotion of some kind because yoga is not cheap and it is not something I can normally afford. I enjoyed it, sort of, and opted to stay on their mailing list in case I ever decided I wanted to sign up for it again and miraculously had the money to spend on it lol.

Last week I got an email newsletter from them talking about all sort of things and at the bottom there was a blurb about how they are looking for Karma Cleaners.

Basically, they are looking for people who are willing to volunteer to help clean the yoga studio and in exchange they get free yoga classes. A lot of yoga studios do this and I’ve been meaning to look in to it for a while now but never got around to it. Well, there was nothing to look in to since they had emailed me (and everyone else on their mailing list) about it so before I could talk myself out of it I shot off an email asking if there were still spots available.

I got a response and eventually ended up with an interview this past Tuesday. πŸ™‚

On the drive to the yoga studio I went to take a sip of water and managed to spill it all over my shirt and my lap, classic me, sigh. Luckily it was a warm day and my shirt managed to dry fairly fast. The pants though, um, not so much. They were black so it wasn’t obvious they were wet but lemme tell ya, sitting in an interview with damp pants, not comfy!

It was a really informal interview, I think if we hadn’t of gotten along she would have said she’d think about it or something along those lines but we did get along, my availability fit with what days they had openings and well, that was that, I start next Tuesday. πŸ™‚

It seems like a pretty good deal to me, I will clean for a little under two hours a week, all in one session. I’ll be the only one there so I can listen to my music and dance around like a weirdo when cleaning (cause that’s how I roll) and it won’t matter. Also, the studio room will have just had a class in it and right when I am done another class will be starting so the room will be at the hot temperature it is at when the class is in session, which means I am gonna sweat like crazeeeeee! I’m looking at this as an opportunity to not only get an extra fitness session in to my week with the actual yoga class I will take but get an additional almost two hours of activity in to my week with the cleaning. Finding out the room will be at its hot temperature made me want to do this even more lol

I was warned to bring water and to be careful to stay hydrated, also, I was told to wear whatever I want because by the end of my cleaning session my clothes will be soaked with sweat, ew, but yay? lol I’m allowed to use the showers that are there when I am done so I don’t have to leave there looking all sweaty and gross, which is nice.

I’m not a huge fan of cleaning, but I’m hoping when I get in to the routine of being there every Tuesday afternoon it’ll just become another one of the random things I do in a week, shrug. The lady I interviewed with said most of their Karma Cleaners stay with them for quite a while, as in years, they love that they get the free classes and the cleaning isn’t that hard or time consuming.

The two options I had were (1) clean for one session a week and get one free yoga class a week or (2) clean for two sessions a week and get unlimited yoga classes. I chose the one cleaning session a week because I don’t want to over commit. Also, even if I had unlimited yoga classes I don’t think I’d be able to fit them in all that often so it’d be kinda wasted on me. For now I am perfectly content to try to find time for one class a week. πŸ™‚ I was told if I ever wanted to change that and clean twice so I could get the unlimited classes to let them know and they’d find a second cleaning shift for me.

So there we have it, I have officially added another fitness activity to my week, and one I have to stick with because I made a commitment, not one I can shrug off when I don’t feel like it, which for me is a good thing because I excel at talking myself out of exercising lol πŸ˜›

Bikram Yoga, bring it on! πŸ™‚
