Are You Up For A Challenge?

21 Sep

I organized a 30 Day Squat challenge at work a couple months ago and it ended up going great! A lot of people joined in, you’d find groups of staff and managers randomly squatting together, the residents thought it was hilarious and would count along with us, all in all, a success.

Everyone agreed they’d like another challenge but picking one ended up being the new challenge. A squat challenge is great because you can squat basically anywhere and you don’t have to touch anything. All the other challenges I thought of involved being on the ground ; ab challenge, plank challenge, push up challenge, and nobody was going to want to do those at work. Lay on the ground mid-shift? Uh, no thanks!

So instead of using a pre-existing challenge from the internet, like I usually do, I made up my own. It has a lot more flexibility than most of the 30 day fitness challenges out there, but that’s why I like it, it makes it more likely people will be willing to try.

What brought on this new challenge? Many people at work, myself included, keep talking about wanting to get back in to a workout routine but it just isn’t happening. There isn’t enough internal motivation to get you to follow through with the workout you planned when you’re exhausted by the end of your shift. Or there are errands that need to be run, or dinner to make for the family (that one doesn’t apply to me obviously lol), or ya know, just life stuff to contend with.

So the workout gets pushed back, thinking you’ll go tomorrow instead of today, or you’ll do something after dinner instead of before, or whatever lie you tell yourself to let you off the hook for the workout you were supposed to do that day.

This challenge isn’t about one specific fitness move, or one specific type of workout, this challenge is about working out in general.

The rules are simple!

(1) Set a goal for how often you want to workout over the next 30 days, you can calculate based on how many workouts per week, or for the span of the month, whatever works best for you.

(2) Write the goal on the tracker that is on the wall beside everybody else’s tracker, so we all know what each other is aiming for.

(3) A workout consists of any activity you classify as a workout as long as it is 30 minutes or longer. What are some examples? Yoga, gym session, dance party with the kids, walking, exercise dvd, running the stairs at work multiple times throughout the day, or anything else that gets your body moving and you feel is a workout.

(4) Track every time you workout on your tracker over the 30 days. Encourage your friends, have fun, share your workout tips, invite a friend to join you in the gym, or the dance party, or in whatever activity you are doing.

That is basically it. The whole challenge is based around getting us moving more over the next 30 days. Helping to encourage our flagging motivation and willpower to kick in and remind us why we feel better when we move more.

I thought I’d open the challenge up to you! I don’t have a tracker for you, but it is easy enough to make your own. I know you won’t have my work peeps to encourage you to keep going, but I’ll encourage you, and you can include your friends and family that you see in person so you can all encourage each other.

Why not, over the next 30 days, get a little more active, try a new type of workout, maybe even start to build the habit of moving more, so that eventually we don’t need a challenge to get our butts moving, instead we move because we want to. Wouldn’t that be an amazing reward to ourselves at the end of the 30 days?

Even cats know some movement is good! Be like a cat!

Riverdance

16 Apr

Sunday evening a friend and I went to see Riverdance, which basically means we sat and watched amazing dancing to beautiful Celtic music for around 2 hours.

riverdance6.jpg

I mean seriously, how do they get their legs to move like that? And their feet, how feet move so fast is beyond me. Its mesmerizing.

If you haven’t seen Riverdance, or Lord of the Dance, or any Irish dancing you’ll have no idea what I’m talking about, and oh boy are you missing out! So before you do anything further, watch the video below to bring you up to speed on what I’m jabbering on about…

See? Didn’t I tell you it is amazing? If you didn’t watch the whole thing at least go to the 4:25 mark and watch that bit, it’s the best bit!

My friend brought a, I guess it is a Polaroid camera, but the new version. It is baby blue and weird and cute all at once. So we of course took selfies that we now have to take pictures of with our phones all so we can share the pictures with social media…sooooo the new tech is making us have to use our pre-existing tech to share the images the new tech took…am I the only who thinks this is odd? lol Either way, it took some cute pictures, they print on this small paper and it was interesting to watch the pictures develop, well, interesting to me but maybe I have a low threshold for what is interesting lol

On a 44 Day Fitness Challenge note I got a walk in after work and before Riverdance so even though I worked all day and had plans in the evening I still managed to fit in a workout. I want to be all smug and say something snotty about how it is proof there is always time for fitness but I am very much aware I will most likely have a day where the most I can fit in are some squats and push-ups and I’ll swear there wasn’t time for more so I’m just gonna keep my not-at-all smug mouth shut. πŸ˜‰

Day 43 – Protein Smoothie Bowl

13 Apr

Before you ask, yes I will be posting updates randomly about my 44 Day Fitness Challenge here. Why? Well, I have to be held accountable somewhere, because if you think I can hold myself accountable and not cheat you obviously don’t know me very well lol πŸ˜‰

Day 2 in the bag! Or day 43…whichever way you want to count it. Down. Up. It is all the same to me!

Today was a gym session after work, leg day! I always forget other people go out and have social lives on Friday nights. When I get to my gym there are always a decent number of vehicles parked there and I internally start to bitch about how many people are going to be in the gym at 10pm but then I walk inside and there are maaaaybe 6 people? And that is a generously high number. Which is when I realize that the parking area is also used by people going to nearby pubs. Oops?

I mean c’mon, who wants to go to a pub when you can go to the gym? On a Friday night. Almost like you have no social life or something. Ok never mind, this is gonna go dark fast if I don’t start blabbing about something else lol

Protein Smoothie Bowl!

Granted, not the prettiest looking food item I’ve ever posted on here. But I’m sure it isn’t the ugliest…maybe…

It is a scoop of protein powder, 1 cup frozen mixed berries, 1 small banana, and a tablespoon or so of plain almond milk. Blend until it hits a consistency you like, I prefer thicker so I’m eating it with a spoon rather than making it a drink. This way I can pretend I’m eating ice cream, only ya know, not as tasty.Β  Aww man, now I want ice cream! But even I, with my special quirky ways of interpreting things, can’t find a way to make ice cream an acceptable post workout meal. Too bad though, cause that would be an awesome post workout meal…don’t mind me while I daydream about ice cream for a minute…

Ok, done! For now at least lol

So yeah, two days sorted, only 42 more to go! πŸ™‚

Day 2 of 12

21 Dec

Alrighty peeps, it is Day 2 of the 12 Days of Fitness and I’m sure everyone has been active today, right? Right!

I was up earlier than any human being should be when on vacation but that is what happens when you are staying with parents who wake up early…and when you are going to a morning WW meeting lol

Today was a happy day, went to my meeting, down a pound, entered a new weight decade, out for brunch with the parents, ate a delish meal at Cora’s. It was a random mixture of healthy and non-healthy foods, as most meals out are.

I got Theo’s Omelette which is an omelette filled with oh so many vegetables, covered in cheese, and served with a side of potatoes, fresh fruit, and toast. I asked them to make the omelette with half the normal amount of cheese because restaurants always seem to drown food in cheese and I think it came out with a pretty decent amount.

After brunch it was errand time, borrowed my Dad’s car for a while and bonus points for me, I returned it in the same condition it was in when I left the driveway. πŸ™‚

This evening after dinner I realized that even though I had parked far away and walked when going to all the shops I hadn’t really done anything worthy of being called exercise so I grabbed one of the exercise dvd’s I brought and started working out.

Tonight I did the 5 Mile Walk dvd by Leslie Sansone, it is a “walk at home” dvd which means you are walking on the spot, or forwards and backwards, or side to side, in random combinations and taking her word for it that eventually you have walked 5 miles. I tend to jog for large parts of it, and incorporate more arm work, so I get a better work out.

walk-at-home

The woman, Leslie, is so annoying, ugh. But she keeps you moving which is the important part. Normally I play the dvd on my laptop with the volume down low and watch something on tv while walking but my mom joined me this evening so we kept the volume up high and we kept being told to “walk! walk! walk!” lol Β πŸ˜€

My fear that I would fail this challenge by Day 2 has been relieved. Now on to figure out where to fit something in on Day 3!

Did you work out today?

Day 1 of 12

20 Dec

It is Day 1 of The 12 Days of Fitness! You didn’t think I forgot did you? πŸ˜‰

Like I said in the original post about the 12 Days of Fitness all that is required for this challenge is to find time everyday, for 12 days, starting December 20th, to be physically active.

What the activity is doesn’t matter, it can be a walk around your neighbourhood, following along to an exercise dvd, taking part in a plank challenge. Whatever! Just do something active. Every. Single. Day.

Today I went bowling. πŸ™‚

bowling

See? Not crazy active. Not some big massive workout. But it still counts! I played two games, met up with old friends, had a blast, and most importantly (for this challenge anyways), was active when otherwise I most likely wouldn’t have been.

I contemplated following along to an exercise dvd in the evening but by the time the thought came to me it was already a bit too late. But that is ok because there is always tomorrow and not like the exercise dvd is going anywhere lol

What activity did you do today?
