Vacation Talk!

I went on vacation for two weeks and recently got back. I had intended to blog while on vacation but yeah, that soooo didn’t end up happening lol It was a simple trip back to Alberta to visit my family and friends, you know, the ones I left behind when moving to BC. 😉

Instead of making multiple posts about the trip I’ll see if I can condense everything in to one post…or maybe two…

The cat came with me so instead of flying we had ourselves a 13 hour road trip through the lovely Canadian mountains then through the lovely Canadian prairies. Striker, the cat, spent the first 45 minutes of the drive loudly expressing his displeasure over his forced confinement in his carrier as well as being manhandled out to the suv. I took a book on cd (from the library) to listen to and he was so loud I had to turn the cd off because I couldn’t hear the narrator! He eventually stopped meowing at me and decided a better use of his time was to pout…for approx 12 hours…

When he wasn’t sitting on the floor under my legs he was sitting in his carrier with his face squashed against the mesh side ignoring me. Blatantly ignoring me.

I have two nephews and I like to take each one of them to hang out one-on-one.

My first day there I took the older nephew (he’s 14) horseback riding. He agreed to go but he wasn’t really feeling the whole riding horse thing, he’s such a trooper! 🙂

After the trail ride we went to a movie (Fantastic 4) and dinner (food court). I tried to get him to go to a real restaurant but there is a pasta place in the mall he loves and I’d rather he eat something he really wanted than drag him somewhere he doesn’t like.

Imagine my surprise and horror when I got home and found the nutritional information online for this dish, it has 900 freakin calories!!! There is brown rice, grilled chicken, beans, various veggies and some bbq sauce but as you can see not a lot of any one ingredient so where all those calories came from I do not know. I do know that I won’t be ordering that ever again, even though it was tasty.

The next day I went for brunch with my mom, we went to Tutti Frutti and I had a lovely vegetarian omelette and one slice of Maple Crisp crunchy french toast. Yes you read that right, crunchy french toast! Mmm!

The omelette was a tad odd, IMO, because it was open not folded or rolled but it was tasty and really that is all that matters lol

My mom got the Casa Blanca which is French toast topped with fresh fruit & coated with delicious English cream only she got the cream on the side so she could decide how much of it she ate. Smart lady! 🙂

Later that day I guest paddled with a dragon boat team called The Raunchy Rodents. They practice on the river and have a freakishly short training season because winter is a long and cold season there, can’t really practice on the river when it is frozen! lol I had a great time, they are a fun bunch! 🙂 They had about half of their team at that practice due to a variety of circumstances which kinda made me feel better about taking a spot on the boat, I would have hated to be an extra body if all their team showed for practice.

Some of us went out after practice for a drink and a nibble, we went to a local pub called Duggan’s Boundary Irish Pub and had a fun time. 🙂 The brunch I had earlier with my mom powered me for the whole day, though I did cave and get some Potato Pancakes cause uh hello, how could I not? lol

The next day was a big day, I took my younger nephew (he is 7 and will proudly tell anyone who asks! lol) to Drumheller to go to the Royal Tyrrell Museum. It is basically the mecca for anyone in to dinosaurs and this little guy is most definitely in his dinosaur phase! It’s a three hour drive there and we spent the entire time talking about dinosaurs and life and music and playing pretend, it was a highly entertaining drive lol

I was abandoned 20 minutes in to our arriving at the museum so he could participate in a Dino Dig, basically he got to go be a paleontologist for 90 minutes while I wandered around doing nothing of much interest because adults aren’t allowed on the expedition…well, minus the adults running the expedition that is lol He loved it! They went on a 2.5 km hike through the badlands, used real paleontology tools to excavate part of a fossil then learned how to cover it properly and transport it back to the museum. After the day was over he told me everyone should move to Drumheller because why would anyone want to live anywhere else? Oh, and we are all supposed to work at the museum…oh boy…lol

If you were thinking he fell asleep on the way home after a long and busy day you my friend are oh-so-wrong. We played pretend and chatted the entire three hour drive home, although I would have been ok with a bit of quiet time because I was tired lol

Let’s see, the next day I got to spend with my friend Nicole, we had plans but they fell through so I ended up going with her while she bought kitty supplies and then adopted two adorable kittens. Yay for kittens! She was going to get just one but the brother and sister were in a cage together and how can anyone be heartless enough to separate siblings?

If I remember correctly the girl is on the left, she is Solar, the boy is on the right and is named Lou. I don’t have a great picture of the two of them because they are super fast and oddly enough don’t much care for staying still…go figure lol We had so much fun playing games with them we basically spent hours playing games and just watching them be silly lol

Sunday (the day after the Day of Kittens!) there was a family brunch where I ate pretty much everything lol I don’t have any group pictures from that day, I do have a bunch of individual pictures but that’s too many to be putting on here. Later that day I went to hang with a friend, Jasmine, and her family which consists of a husband, three kids and a dog. Her brother came over as did her parents, all of which I have known for a loooong time. Her youngest is my Goddaughter and all three kids think of me as an Aunt. They are great, the whole lot of em. 🙂 That evening involved a decent amount of alcohol, lots of reminiscing and my camera being dropped in to a glass of water by the middle child.


Yup, there went my camera. 😦 We fished it out immediately and put it in to a bag of rice to dry it out but the camera didn’t recover fully. It could take a picture but the flash was dead and the picture quality was not good after it went swimming. Sadness.

I spent Monday working in my parent’s basement sorting out all the stuff I have stored there lol My parents got the basement renovated and my mom wanted me to go through all my stuff and sort it in to things I am bringing back with me, things I am keeping stored in my parent’s basement and things I am getting rid of. I got rid of quite a bit, brought back a chunk and left the rest in rubbermaid containers on shelves out of my parents way. Aren’t I such a good daughter? 😉

Tuesday was a day of awesome, well, sort of. I went to Calgary to ride the Olympic bobsled track and ride the zip line they have. Calgary hosted the 1988 Olympics and now the Olympic Park is a tourist place as well as where current and future Olympians train, for only $99/month I too could have a gym membership there lol

I have gone zip lining many times but this type of harness was new to me. When I was hooked to the line it is like sitting in the most comfortable hammock ever lol It is supposed to be the fastest/longest zip line in North America (if I remember correctly) and there was a parachute I had to deploy to get me slowed down in time for the stop but it wasn’t so fast or long that it was scary, sigh. I think I am done zip lining since it no longer brings out any nervousness or fear. The bobsledding was interesting, there are 14 turns in that track and it was fun but not “oh my god I’m so scared and nervous and can’t wait for the adrenaline rush” type of fun, which was what I was hoping for, shrug.

On the way home from Calgary I stopped at Peters’ Drive In and ordered heaven, seriously, their food is sooooo good! If I lived in Calgary I’d be a thousand pounds because I would always be at Pete’s lol

The rest of the trip was filled with dinner with friends, hanging with other friends, hanging with my parents, helping out with stuff around my parent’s place, basically just enjoying being there. Oh, and shopping! There was some super impressive shopping! I got boots, and flats, and a blazer (so grown up of me don’t ya think?), Christmas presents for various people, random things that I wanted to buy there because there is only 5% tax vs the ridiculously high tax where I live, stupid tax *grumble*

I had a great, fun filled, always doing something, type of trip and I’m really glad I went. 🙂

The drive back went much better, the cat decided I wasn’t subjecting him to some random form of torture and he spent most of the drive sitting on various objects so he had a better view out of the window. The only time he got vocal was when I had to swerve to avoid a deer and the cat did not appreciate that, I’m pretty sure he would have hated the experience of hitting the deer more though so I wasn’t too worried about his bruised feelings lol. 😛

Guys suck, throw rocks at ’em. Some days that quote is just perfect.

It’s been a crappy week – work stuff, acting stuff, pmsing like crazy – I’m surprised I haven’t beaten someone…or eaten an entire tub of nutella (which let me tell ya, still a possibility!)

Today is St. Patrick’s Day (duh!) so a day of fun and green. 😀

Every year McDonald’s for this one day only makes a Shamrock Shake – a mint green milkshake! YUM! I decided that since the milkshake is only made one day out of the year it would be ok for me to get one (size small of course) so some friends at work and I went at lunch time. So no biggy right? One small milkshake isn’t gonna kill me or anything but when I was standing at a friend’s desk waiting for her to get her coat on one of the guys heard where we were going, looked right at me and in front of the entire frickin office said nice n loud “you’re getting a milkshake? aren’t you supposed to be on a diet?”. That might seem like not so bad of a question but it was the tone he said it in…totally made me feel like I am 1000 lbs and shouldn’t ever even think about getting a milkshake let alone actually drinking it. 😦  And to make it worse the entire office went silent and stared at him then at me with looks on their faces like “wtf??”

My first instinct was to go over and punch him, which would’ve gotten me fired, sigh, so instead I walked off in the other direction. I ended up kicking a wall and thank goodness my boot protected my foot!

If it hadn’t been for my friends telling me to ignore him and to still go to McD’s I so would have just gone and sat down and eaten my soup. I hate that something stupid someone said could make me feel so down about my weight. The whole rest of the day I just kept thinking all kinds of negative things about my weight. grr. No one should have that kind of power over someone else and yet…obviously heartless stupid comments do have a strong impact on me, as evidenced by today.

So it’s yet one more crappy day – this week blows. I can’t wait for it to be over, although, I am terrified for weigh in day. eek. This week I have eaten pizza, dessert breadsticks and a milkshake…not good! Too many cheats in one week. I’ve gotta tighten up the reins and be more careful or I’ll lose ground – and that would suck even more then mean comments from stupid guys at work!

Road Trippin

I am not at home; I am 4 hours or so away from home and on my way to getting even farther from the comfort of my perfect bed and my food routine. Now, this makes it sound like I am a home-body who doesn’t like going anywhere…Not True! I looooove travelling, I will go almost anywhere with very little notice (if I can afford it) and have a blast the entire time. With road trips I usually enjoy the travelling part of the vacation more then whatever I do at the destination, shrug, don’t know why – it’s just always been like that.

There is nothing like seeing the mountains and clouds touch at dusk; watching as the clouds shift colours from white to blue, with purple and pinks thrown in just for fun. It’s like mother nature is colouring and seeing what ‘look’ she likes best…and when she can’t decide she lets the sun finish going down and we get the beauty of the stars to keep us company. I am a prairie girl at heart and can’t wait until I get through the mountains tomorrow and get to see my endless flat plains, fields upon fields growing corn, hay, various crops with all those cows and horses thrown in to the mix. On the prairies it’s as if the ground and sky never meet, the horizon is so far away. I feel as free as I ever can feel when in my suv driving down a highway; I feel like I can go anywhere, be anyone, my mind wanders and I think of all kinds of things. When driving alone on a trip I have my most introspective moments; I learn things about myself I would never think to find out…the things aren’t always good but I don’t care, the act of learning is what I enjoy.

I started writing about the road trip to bring up my routine; lol, sorta strayed there, sorry! 🙂 On days I work my eating is structured; I take snacks and lunch in with me so I know exactly what I am going to be eating, this may seem boring but it is working for me right now. I eat at almost the same time each day – this includes my snacks and meals. Breakfast is at 8:30am,my first snack is between 10:30am and 11:00am, lunch is at 1pm, and my afternoon snack is around 3pm. Then when I get home I eat dinner-dinner has a greater chance of fluctuating times but that is ok. It’s easy to stick to a diet (alright, healthy eating plan) when you do the same thing every 5 out of 7 days.

Today however things changed! I started my road trip! wOOt! 😀 Most of my day was normal, I didn’t start out on the road till after a full day at work so I had all my normal daytime routines with food. Dinner was a little trickier, well, not trickier, I planned ahead of time what I was going to eat so I had something easy to prepare but not high in points, what was trickier was finding time to eat it! lol. I ended up eating my salmon steak and brown rice while standing in the kitchen in between various last minute packing. The salmon steak was one I had before, the dill flavour again, the rice was different though, it is from Minute Rice and is this cup thing. You take the lid off the cup, stick it in the microwave for 1 minute and presto! Rice! I bought the brown rice (of course) and one cup is 4 points…high but doable. I thought this evening was the perfect time to try it out. It is alright, not great or anything. The rice felt a little undercooked and it was freakin hot! Even though I poured it out of the cup and spread it around to help it cool down it took quite a while before I could actually eat it. Course, trying to rush eating and finishing getting ready didn’t help matters. I might buy it again; it’s a handy thing to have around to use as a side dish when you don’t want to bother with yams.

After getting the suv all packed up off I went with a huge bottle of water to tide me over. I figured since I only had 4 hours in the first leg of the trip I didn’t need any snacks nearby, the water would be enough. It was too! 🙂

Tomorrow though, hmmm, what to do about tomorrow…the routine will be shot to hell! Heck, the routine is gonna be booted so far out the window it will rebound out of hell and end up somewhere in space. eesh. I should be fine with breakfast; there is a handy little restaurant attached to the hotel so I will attempt to get something healthy there but after that…sigh. I always eat when on road trips, one of my favourite parts of being on a road trip was loading up on all different kinds of junk food and munching away while driving at fast speeds and listening to loud music – it’s a perfect combo! Tomorrow will not have the junk food aspect though and I fear that. I bought some 100 Calorie goodies so I can have some chocolate or something if I really need it but those just aren’t the same. sigh.

My plan (cause heaven forbid I not have a plan!) is to eat the veggies and fruit I packed and when I want lunch I brought a nice big salad that…oh crap! I was gonna say I brought a tupperware bowl to put the salad in to (it is one of those salad kits so everything is in a bag) and I just realized I left the bowl on my counter at home…now what am I supposed to do with the salad?? Eat it from the bag?? Maybe the restaurant will let me have a take out container…

Well, ok, the plan if I can get a container is when I get hungry pull over at one of the many beautiful spots along the way and sit outside by a lake or little waterfall and enjoy my salad. I am not going to wolf it down, I will eat it like a normal person…as if I was at home and had time to indulge. That way I will realize I am full and I will enjoy the process…I am hoping the enjoying of eating will help me get over the fact that I won’t be getting back in the car and chowing down on Starburst. lol.

I do have an indulgence planned though and man is it a big one! I am going to Peter’s Drive In when I hit Calgary and getting a milkshake! They only have like the absolute best milkshakes ever created and I am gonna get one! Yum! 😀 The thought of that milkshake has gotten me through some rough points these past couple weeks. When someone at work was eating something completely unhealthy but that I really wanted I kept reminding myself that I have a Peter’s milkshake in my future and it made it that much easier to resist the temptation of the moment. My mouth is going to be in heaven! That milkshake however, is one of the main reasons I will be eating salad and veggies and fruit while driving instead of starburt, malteesers and chips. I can’t get any nutritional information on them! There is nothing on the website and when I emailed them asking for the nutritional information I heard nothing back, rude. 😦 I figure it means they are just that bad, lol. I don’t care though, I am getting one no matter what! 😀

Here is what I ate today:

1 whole wheat bagel = 3 points

1 tbsp light cream cheese = 1 point

1 banana = 2 points

1 6″ Subway sub = 5 points

cheese on sub = 1 point

salmon steak = 3 points

Minute Rice cup = 4 points

2 Triangles Light Laughing Cow cheese = 1 point

1 cup pineapple = 1 point

That puts me at 20 points and I am still a little bit hungry; I will either eat 1 cup of fruit and only use up 1 more point or I will eat 1 of the 100 calorie packages and use 2 points. Neither option will have me actually use all my points but I am tired and want to sleep and while hungry I am not that hungry!

Quick side note, I didn’t have a chance to post yesterday so here is what I ate July 21/10:

3/4 cup honey nut cheerios = 2 points

1/2 cup 1% milk = 1 point

1 banana = 2 points

1/2 cup honey garlic noodles = 3 points

salad = 0 points

1 cup butternut squash soup = 2 points

1 cup blackberries = 1 point

1 cup blue berries = 1 point

1 medium iced capp from Tim Horton’s = 3 points

1 timbit =1 point

1 peanut butter and jam sandwich = 5 points

1 cup 1% milk = 2 point

I used all 23 of my points yesterday. Yah! 😀
