Buckwheat aka Kasha

6 Oct

I got intro’d to a new food today, Z at work brought me 1/2 cup cooked buckwheat to try. Ain’t that so nice? lol She has been eating it for ages an ages apparently and we were talking food yesterday and I guess this inspired her to share some with me, yah! I have been trying to not experiment exactly but go out of my comfort zone when it comes to food. I had it in my head eating healthy consisted of boring vegetables and, well…hmm, that’s about it. lol. So I look around a bit more at the grocery store and I talk food with people I know to get ideas for things to try.

the trickster!

Today I tried the buckwheat (which is also called kasha). I do not know how it was cooked since Z cooked it but I know she said she put a bit of fish sauce on it cause that is how she eats it. 🙂 It was good – one of those grains that doesn’t really have flavour, like rice, so it picks up the flavour of whatever you put it with. I had it as a side with my fish and veggies at dinner time and tried to eat most forkfuls of it “uncontaminated” by the other foods on my plate so I could fully appreciate the kasha on its own.

I did something I never do though – I didn’t check the points before I ate it! Shocking I know! lol. 😛 I got home late and was hungry so I decided to make dinner and risk the points of the kasha, figuring it couldn’t be all that bad points wise since it’s only a half cup – I was wrong, oh so wrong!

Now look at that protein and fiber, it’s frickin amazing, practically a miracle food! BUT! Look at the evil calories!! That is a lot! ugh. Luckily I only had a 1/2 cup but that is still 4.5 points, sigh. I would never eat a cup of kasha cause hello? who wants to waste 9 points on a side dish?

Z says she eats it with milk, like a porridge, and that it is super yummy and fills her up till lunch time but I think I will stick with my cereal and fruit thanks very much – that is only 4 points and fills me up just fine. 🙂

So, as a new food yah! it tasted decently good and was a pleasant side dish but will I buy and make it on my own? Nope! Too many calories for moi!

Today I ate:

29 grams honey nut cheerios = 2 points

1/2 cup 1% milk = 1 point

1/2 cup diced peaches = 1 point

1/2 cup mixed fresh fruit = 1 point

1/2 cup Maple Baked Beans = 2 points

1 piece toast = 1 point

1 Activia yogurt = 2 points

Green Giant Essentials Fibre = 2 points

2 triangles light laughing cow = 1 point

1 corn on the cob = 1 point

1 tsp margarine = 1 point

1/2 cup buckwheat = 4.5 points

grilled veggies = 0 points

1 dill sauce salmon steak = 3 points

1 thinsations oreo cakesters = 2 points

Grand total of 24.5 points, shoot! 😀 I forgot I had eaten the green giant veggies at lunch so when I was tallying up at the end of the day I thought I had done ok but then I remembered those stupid veggies. Grr! I mean sure they are tasty but they come already in a sauce so it adds points – I don’t normally use sauces on my veggies thereby saving me points. Ah well, using 2.5 of my flex points isn’t gonna kill me – I just hate using them by accident, I prefer knowing I am about to use them and being prepared for the final number of points at the end of the day, ya know?

At work today there were two big temptations, sigh. First off a catered breakfast with nice yummy looking breakfast sandwiches and wraps…I had the 1/2 cup mixed fresh fruit, double sigh. lol. The sandwiches and wraps were all full of crazed bad stuff, bacon, greasy eggs, cheese…I figured it was safer to avoid it all. 😛 Then at lunch there was a meeting where we were fed which awesome right? Well, no. Cause imagine being trapped in a room that has the door closed and being surrounded by people eating pizza. Oh man, the smell almost killed me! When that meeting was over I bolted so fast to go grab my lunch from the kitchen. lol. Normally when there is a meeting over lunch I take my own lunch with me but this meeting was early, at 11:30am so I thought I’d be ok waiting till after to eat – I didn’t anticipate how the smell and visuals would affect me. Oh! And LL literally holding a piece in front of my face and offering me a bite *groan* that is some cruel torture man. *shakes head*

Pocky! Pocky! Pocky!

8 Sep

strawberry and chocolate

Ya gotta love Pocky…for those of you who don’t know what that is…that’s so sad. 😦 teehee

Pocky is this wonderous little treat that is imported from Japan and on the box is described as “biscuit sticks strawberry cream coated” – ok, so the grammer isn’t great but the coated biscuit sticks are! 🙂 They come in chocolate or strawberry and from the looks of all the images that came up when I googled to get pics for this post there are many other flavours (that sadly are not offered here, *big dramatic sigh* lol)

The reason I bring Pocky up is because I got to eat some today; haven’t had them in quite a while. Somehow I ended up with 7 points left over at the end of the day – this is after dinner an everything! Who in the world has that many points left at the end of the day? I should have only had 3 points or so, just enough for a snack. shrug. Small lunch and not as much fruit during the day and this is what happens. lol. I was uber hungry by the end of the day but by the time I got home I wasn’t really wanting food anymore. You know when that happens? How you wait so long to eat you don’t want to eat anymore? I hate when that happens.

squeeeezable pizza sauce

I decided to make that tortilla pizza again but with minor adjustments, for starters I used real pizza sauce this time. The brand is Primo, and I am not kidding you it is called Pizza Squeeze Sauce – original name huh? There are three different flavours, least at my grocery store, Traditional, Garlic and Hot n Spicy. I bought traditional cause I am boring like that. lol. It’s only 1 point for 1/4 cup which is a lot of sauce when you’re spreading it on a tortilla. Then I put a sliced up Light Babybell on top, some orange pepper, onion, sliced mushroom and grilled chicken. When it was pretty much done in the oven I put a cheese slice on top (torn in to little pieces), I should have just put another babybell on the stupid thing but I didn’t, shrug. It was good, way more filling then the last one I made – probably cause of all the veggies I put on it…and since that was the point of all the veggies I am glad it worked. lol.

So my food today was:

2 weetabix = 2 points

1/2 cup 1% milk = 1 point

1 nectarine = 1 point

1 cup Tomato and Pepper soup = 2 points

salad = o points

1/4 cup chick peas = 1 point

mixed veggies = 0 points

2 triangles Light Laughing Cow = 1 point

50 grams grilled chicken = 1 point

1 whole wheat tortilla = 2 points

1 Light Babybell = 1 point

1/4 cup Primo Pizza Sauce = 1 point

1 cheese slice = 1 point

sliced mushroom, pepper, onion = 0 points

1 pckg strawberry Pocky = 5 points

This puts me at 20 used points. 🙂 Only two left for the day and hunger pains have a started so I am sure I will find something to snack on easy peasy. So now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go work on my stance for swordfighting class tomorrow…or at least do some stretching or something cause holy crap do my muscles hurt from yesterday! This getting in shape thing is gonna be the death of me! lol

An Almost Pizza?

2 Sep

Most of today was pretty normal, got up stupid early, went to work, came home, went to the Grand Opening of my friend’s tanning salon, came home, made dinner, did laundry and am now writing a post. See? Normal. 🙂

The Grand Opening was cool, mostly cause I got to see MS again, I haven’t seen her in quite a while. We didn’t get to catch up, she was at work after all, lol, but being that she is her own boss we got to chill a bit. She’s still organizing the old client files that were kept on filing cards (seriously?!) soon they will all be in her computer. Her and her bf did a lot of work in that place before they could consider it presentable. Apparently it was disgustingly dirty – the lady who owned it before never cleaned, eeeew! So her and the bf slaved from 5pm to some ungodly time the next morning to get the place the way they want it and now they are up and running. I hope she does well with it, it seems to be making her happy for now so that’s good. 🙂

Now, on to the almost pizza! I got the idea from my mom sometime last week. I grilled a chicken breast on my george foreman grill, I love that thing!, then topped a whole wheat tortilla wrap with Alfredo Roasted Tomato Sauce (the kind I had on my pasta the other week) a light babybell that I sliced up, some tomato sliced up and then the chicken cut up in to tiny bits. Stuck it all in the oven for, well, I didn’t time it, I waited till all the cheese was melted and the edges of the tortilla looked toasted and voila! Almost pizza! It was actually pretty good. 🙂 Next time I will put more veggies on it, I would have this time but I didn’t have any raw veggies (other then the tomato) and I didn’t feel like digging out some frozen vegg. And yes, I know, I was already in the kitchen it’s not like digging the frozen vegg outta the freezer involved anything other then me turning around and opening the freezer door but that’s not the point! 😛 lol Oh, I also put a Kraft cheese slice on top after I took it outta the oven, ripped it in to pieces and placed it on, the pizza was hot enough it melted the cheese. If I had a bunch of veggies on it I wouldn’t have done that but it was looking a little…well, lacking, ya know? The entire thing was 7 points which is not bad at all. It would have been six except for that cheese slice and since next time I make it I will have more veggies on it I won’t need that cheese slice to make it look less plain.

I found a way to make my pizza and eat it too! 😛

On a slightly distressing note I think I am getting sick. I just felt off all day today and my throat started to hurt, ugh. Whatever the bug is I might be able to beat it, I am eating healthier now! lol. There is a nasty cold/bug thing going around so knowing me I will catch some form of it. Cause I was feeling so worn I was oh so tempted to buy dinner on my home from the grand opening. I was right beside a fish n chip place that is s’posed to be the best in the city (I can’t say for sure if it is since I haven’t eaten there, sigh) and man was I tempted, my feet started walking towards it but somehow I ended up going right on by. I also almost stopped at a Japanese restaurant, thought I might grab some sushi or something but didn’t want to spend the money. In the end I ended up just going home cause I was too tired to bother figuring out somewhere else I could eat. Yet one more indication I may be getting a bug…too tired to be properly tempted by food? Oh the horrors! 😛 I am glad in the end I came home and made the almost pizza, it was lower in points then anything I would have bought, it was interesting and easy to make and it gave me one more dinner dish that I can fit in to my daily eating so all in all, good way to end the day.

So, for today I ate:

2 weetabix = 2 points

1/2 cup 1% milk  = 1 point

1 1/2 cup strawberries = 1 point

1 banana = 2 points

1/2 Fiesta Salad = 4 points

1 cup grapes = 1 point

1 cup soup = 2 points

1 light babybell = 1 point

1 small slush = 1 point

50 grams chicken = 1 point

1 whole wheat tortilla wrap = 2 points

1 light babybell = 1 point

sliced tomato = 0 points

1/4 cup alfredo roated tomato sauce = 2 points

1 cheese slice = 1 point

1 weight watchers package pretzel twists = 2 points

I went over my points for the day, I ate 24 instead of 22 but I have two reasons for why. (1) I forgot I ate the banana at work so didn’t add it in and thought I had two points left for a snack after dinner, my bad! (2) I didn’t finish my strawberries or my cereal because I started not feeling well so I didn’t actually get all those points. Halfway through the day I decided I would eat a little extra this evening to make up for those lost points, nothing big just a little snack of some kind, and then I totally forgot about that. lol. So when I ate my pretzel twists this evening after dinner it wasn’t to make sure I got all my points, it was cause I thought I still had two more points to eat…doh!

I am ok with having a total of 24 today, mostly cause of not finishing all my breakfast but also I have flex points – I try my hardest not to use them – but they are there in case of a slip up or special treat or whatever so really, this shouldn’t screw me up too much. Tomorrow might but that’s cause I am going out to a bar and I haven’t figured out calories in alcohol yet, lol. But that is a problem for tomorrow!

Pizza! Pizza! Come ‘n Smell It!

17 Jul

Today we had a Lunch and Learn at work; basically it’s a long meeting/training session that takes place over lunch time so they feed us. I don’t mind them usually; generally the food is pizza or something similarly easy and yummy and who doesn’t like pizza? Well, you can see where this is leading I’m sure…I can’t eat pizza! Well, ok, I can but it’s soooooo many points why would I want to?

Mmm...looks so yummy but I didn't touch it!

The pizza was from The Flying Wedge www.flyingwedge.com , they are pretty decent, the best part about them is that they have a lot of different flavours so if you’re feeling like eating something a little different on your pizza good chance you’ll find it there. The delivery guy was all “it’s the healthiest pizza you can find, all natural ingredients – real cheese!” well ha! Maybe it does have the closest to healthy ingredients on a pizza you can get but that doesn’t make it good for you. The Veggie Wedgie is 5 points per slice…you’d think a slice of vegetarian pizza wouldn’t be so bad but apparently it is. Sure a meal is usually around 5 or 6 points but one slice of pizza does not a meal make…I don’t know anybody who eats only 1 slice and 10 points for 2 slices seems ridiculous.

Luckily, I knew in advance that we were having the lunch and learn and that we were being fed pizza so I brought my own lunch (well, that I do everyday) but I brought a more indulgent seeming lunch so that I wouldn’t feel deprived while watching everyone else eat pizza. It’s a pasta bowl from M&M Meat Shops; it was Italian Sausage and Penne – 5 points for the bowl which is so large it’s a complete meal. It tasted like it should be more then 5 points (mmm, the sausage was really good!) so I felt like I was getting a treat but instead of all the points I would have eaten if I’d had 2 slices of pizza I ate only 5 points and was full afterwards. Yah! A little pre-planning saved my points! 😀

Today I ate:

3/4 cup Almond Special K = 2 points

1 cup 1% milk = 1 point

1 banana = 2 points

1 Italian Sausage and Penne Bowl = 5 points

1 cup grapes = 1 point

1 Fiesta Salad = 8 points

1 Raspberry Fruit Bar = 2 points

That is 22 points; I still have 1 point left so I am going to eat one of my Weight Watchers chocolates when I make a cup of tea. Perfecto! 🙂

I thought I wouldn’t feel overly hungry today since I felt that way yesterday and normally that “I’m so hungry I wanna stuff my face” feeling lasts only 1 day but a couple times today I felt really hungry and just wanted to eat! Now, I have more then enough food with me when I am at work but today I felt like my food stores wouldn’t be enough – they were, well, they had to be cause it’s not like I could magically produce food from thin air lol. In actuality, I must have had enough food because I had an errand after work that took quite a while so I had dinner late and I wasn’t feeling starved when I finally got to eat. But those hungry patches during the day at work were hard; I was so tempted to go to the little convenience store in the lobby area of my work building and buy something, anything! and lemme tell you there is nothing healthy in that little store! lol.

Tomorrow should be interesting, I am going to be out all day with KL, we are going outlet shopping in the states so we’ll just have to see what I end up eating. eek. I am a little worried because finding healthy food in a mall is almost impossible but hopefully I will be able to find something…
