Kitty Litter Review

4 May

Ok so for years I have been buying Maxx Scoop Kitty Litter for Small Spaces by Purina. The cat seems to like it, it really does control smell and well, it is pretty great, ya know, for litter lol

maxx scoop

I never really thought about it but I was quite brand loyal and when it got discontinued I, and the cat, got really mad.

Apparently Purina discontinued it due to low sales, which I think is a load of shit…get it? Kitty Litter…shit…they kinda go together lol πŸ˜‰

Purina oh so thoughtfully put coupons in some of the last containers of the Maxx Scoop litter for the replacement litter which is Purina Tidy Cats LightWeight Litter.

tidy cats

I figured hey why not try it? The coupons weren’t just for a percentage off they were for free containers of the stuff and free is always good with me. πŸ™‚

Well, I learned the hard way that just because something is free doesn’t mean it is a good deal.

The first version of the Tidy Cats litter I tried was the Lightweight with Glade. Apparently someone in the Purina brain trust thought cats and humans wouldn’t mind a puff of glade scent exploding in to the air every time little cat paws move the litter around. Trust me on this it is not a pleasant scent and when combined with the scent of a freshly used litter box it becomes even worse. Imagine the smell of poop and air freshener combining and assaulting your nostrils, the air freshener doesn’t do anything to cover the smell, it just is one more unpleasant scent to deal with.

So for my next coupon I selected one without Glade built in, I just couldn’t handle the idea of smelling that again. While it didn’t stink of Glade every time the cat used the litter box it also didn’t do anything to control odours, which is super important when living in a teeny tiny apartment.

All four versions of their litter are Lightweight which in theory is a great idea. Litter that doesn’t weigh so much it is hard to carry home? Yay!

What they don’t tell you is Lightweight also means dusty as hell and easily spreads all over the apartment. As in, ALL OVER!

Every time the cat hops out of the litter box a ridiculous amount of litter comes with him, and no, this is not something that has happened with other litter. My best guess is that because it is somehow, magically, lightweight, that makes it more susceptible to sticking to little paws and spreading everywhere.

Before you wonder, yes there is a mat in front of the litter box specially designed to catch the small amounts of litter that will inevitably end up outside the box but this poor mat can’t keep up with how much litter comes out of the box now. It is inundated with litter, which means it doesn’t keep it in place anymore. sigh.

Thanks to this demonic lightweight kitty litter I am now sweeping my floor multiple times a day because walking barefoot on litter is so not ideal and when I wear slippers (which I normally do) the *crunch-crunch-crunch* sounds are distressing.

Tonight I bought the Safeway Compliments brand of litter to tide me over until I hit up Costco. A friend of mine, who is a fellow Cat Slave, says there is a great Kitty Litter at Costco so I am going to try that one. My next choice after that is the PetSmart brand litter that was always advertised as being just as good at Maxx Scoop but cheaper. I was too chicken to swap out the litter before but now we have fallen on desperate times I will try anything!…well anything except more of that LightWeight crap by Purina. Talk about a waste of money.

My Refinished Table

3 May

I have a little table, I think it used to be a vanity table, that I got when I moved out. It belonged to my parents, and before that to my Grandma on my dad’s side, and before that I don’t know…maybe it got given to Grandma and Grandpa by one of their parents or maybe they bought it, and if they did buy it did they buy it brand new? Who knows! But it is definitely old, well, older than other stuff I own, especially since most of it comes from Ikea lol

It is actually part of a set, there are also two dressers, one of which I snagged from my parents last summer, the other is unfortunately being held hostage by my brother and I doubt I will ever get possession of it lol

I use this little table to do my hair at. Such a noble purpose! I always think it would be an adorable table to sit at and write letters or do other creative work on buuuuut to do that I’d have to move the hair dryer and straightener and hair brush aaaaaand go in to my bedroom (I am usually in the living room) and that is apparently too much effort for me *rolls eyes*.

So this is what it normally looks like…

2015-01-22 00.07.12

Notice the horrible paint job? Ugh. I hate it. It is chipped all over and a colour that I have no love for…my mom was the last person to paint it and she painted over the pre-existing layers of paint. She painted it when it was popular to have that “antique green” colour thing happening, so that is what she did…the lighting in this pic isn’t great so trust me, that is the colour and no offence to my mom but double ugh. That trend passed a loooong time ago and this table is a perfect example of why lol

Last summer I decided I needed a project and this table was going to be it! How hard could it possibly be to take some paint off and re-paint the table in a colour I like? I imagined this entire process taking two days, three tops if the table needed two layers of paint put on and therefore needed drying time. I have painted rooms, surely I can paint one little table!

Ha!

This “little project” has taken me for ever! Especially since I am lazy and kept putting it off lol

Turns out there weren’t just one or two layers of paint on this table, there were 6. Six! And one of those layers was this horrible dark brown that needed no fewer than 4 coats of paint remover and scraping to get it off. That dark brown paint was harder to remove than gum out of hair and I curse whichever ancestor put it on the table. Curse!…especially since I am sure that dark brown will be one of the many layers of paint on the matching dresser which means one day I’ll have to get it off an even larger piece of furniture…hopefully by then I will have enough money to be able to pay someone to do it lol

I originally bought an eco-friendly paint remover, I wanted this to be non damaging to the environment, or as non damaging as possible anyways. I found one at Canadian Tire and it was crap. I followed all the instructions and nothing happened. I thought I must be doing something wrong so I asked my landlord who is a handyman kind of guy and he said the eco-friendly ones never work well and I’d be better off using the kind he has.

He then oh-so-nicely showed me where his stash of the stuff was and said to help myself. He also gave me a bunch of tips and tricks to make the whole thing go easier. Turns out there were a lot of things I hadn’t thought of so his help proved invaluable.

Besides lending me his knowledge, different sized scraper tools and paint remover he also let me move the table in to his garage and work there.

The above pics are the table in the garage awaiting rejuvenation. See that filigree on the front of the drawer? That was the part I was most excited about, I couldn’t wait to see it without so many layers of paint on it, I was betting on there being way more detail to it than what I had ever seen.

2016-02-04 19.51.21

This is the paint thinner at work on the drawer front, see the evil brown paint peeking through?

2016-02-04 19.27.10

And here is the beautiful filigree! The right side is the side still covered in 6 freakin layers of evil paint, on the left it is for the most part bare with just little bits of paint still needing removal. You would not believe how hard it was getting all the paint out of the various nook and crannies of the flowers and leaves. But totally worth it because seriously, detail, look at that detail! Someone hand made that, took time to carve each little leaf and flower and I absolutely love it. πŸ™‚

My landlord had suggested taking it off the drawer and replacing it with a new one, save me a ton of work, which absolutely horrified me, and I am so glad I didn’t listen to him.

After working on it, then ignoring it for months, then working on it again, I finally finished the table and am quite happy with the results.

Sorry for the shadow from the overhang on the close up picture, I couldn’t really figure out a way to avoid that…

The table looks more white in the pictures than it is, it is a colour called something silly like Fairy Wings and is a warmer tone than just white. I know it seems like a plain choice but I wanted to be able to change decorations on the table and always have them look good with the paint colour. Also, I didn’t want a colour I would get bored with after a year or so and have to go through the entire process again lol.

2016-04-28 13.55.21

This is what the table looks like now…I’m not completely set on the items I have on the desk but for now they will do. You may notice the back of the table, there is a new piece there. My landlord offered to make it so items wouldn’t slip off the back of the table…something that has never happened now that I think of it lol. There was a ledge back there, an unsightly little ledge, where a mirror used to live. I’m not sure what happened to the mirror, it might be in my parent’s basement and if it is one day I will claim it but for now I am quite happy with my black framed mirror that is on the wall. I actually have to raise the mirror a little bit since that new back piece covers a bit of the mirror frame but its not really a priority in my world right now lol

2016-04-28 13.55.49

This little guy is why I wanted a simple colour for the table. Right now I really like this teal wooden decorative item with the “never stop exploring” quote on it but I might get bored with it, or the colour, or just be wanting change, and I’ll take it off the table and want to replace it with something else. By choosing a simple colour I won’t be limited to picking another teal item because I need it to match my table.

2016-04-28 14.04.35

I was going to leave you with the uncluttered picture of the table, as if that is what it looks like all the time lol, but I decided to be honest. Here is what it looks like on a daily basis. πŸ™‚ I want to buy one of those weighted purse hook things to hang my hair dryer on because it has a loop on the handle so it can be hung when put away. I haven’t figured out what to do with the straightener though, it doesn’t have a loop so I can easily hang it. I like the table top to be fairly clutter free, I don’t mind items along the back but I don’t like having the main part of the table covered, even if it is with my all important hair dryer and straightener lol.

So there we have it, took me a ridiculous amount of time but I did manage to strip the old paint and replace it with a colour I like. Yay!

It’s silly but every time I go in to my room I look at the table and smile a little, there is something to be said for seeing the results of your hard work. πŸ™‚

Canadian Census 2016

2 May

I saw a bunch of things online today about Canadians being excited to fill out the census and as a result they crashed the Government website…apparently this makes us all nerds.

Click on the link to read a BuzzFeed article about it…

https://www.buzzfeed.com/craigsilverman/census-so-lit?utm_term=.hvwnz0NNj#.uxMXD6ee5

Well add one more to the nerd club because I got my census stuff in the mail today and was excited to take part. πŸ™‚

I’m not sure why I am happy to fill out the census stuff, I mean really its just a form asking boring questions about me but, well, I dunno, I guess I think the census is important and I’m glad the new government brought it back.

Sadly I didn’t get the looooong version, sigh, so my experience filling out the census was only a couple of minutes, but hey, they’ll send one out again someday and maybe I’ll get the long one then!

I got sent an oddly sized envelope that has rip off sides. Don’t mind my hand hiding my addie lol

I enjoy the tag line “Complete the census – it’s the law”…I keep hearing Sylvester Stallone’s voice from when he was in the movie Judge Dredd and he says “I am the law!” πŸ˜›

2016-05-02 21.32.45

When you open the envelope this is what it says (sorry it is cut off on the sides, my bad!) Along the top, where I cropped the picture, there is a personal code that I use when I log on to the website so they know it is me.

2016-05-02 21.34.00

Aaaaand here is the first page you get when you go to the website. I can’t show you pics from when I was filling out the questions cuz ya know, privacy an all that πŸ˜‰ but I highly doubt any of you would be interested in that stuff anyways.

2016-05-02 21.37.11

I can’t say for the long version but the short one is all multiple choice, except for one question at the end where you can write in any questions, or concerns, or comments. I wrote in that I wished I had gotten the long version lol I don’t think that is really the kind of comment they were looking for but hey, they gave me a platform to comment on so I’m gonna use it! πŸ˜‰

The Car Is Mine

28 Apr

Anybody remember that song “The Boy Is Mine”?…anybody? No? Ok, well, go YouTube it to remind you of the beat because every time I think “the car is mine!” my brain thinks it to the beat of that song and it is driving me a tad nutty lol

Today, officially, was my final payment on my suv! Yay! I am so freakin happy about this! Now sure, for most people finishing your vehicle payments probably isn’t such a huuuge massive deal, just one more thing you can check off the list or something but to me, well, lemme tell ya, these payments being over is going to save me financially.

Sound overly dramatic? Well trust me when I say I am telling it like it is. πŸ˜› When I bought this suv I had a roomie and way cheaper rent, oh and I was earning a bit more money than I am now. So while the payments were a bit tight they did fit in my budget. However, life changes, the company I worked at went under, I got a job with a higher hourly wage but fewer weekly hours, oh and I moved and my rent went up so all of a sudden my finances blew up.

Blew. Up.

Now though I have an extra $200 bi-weekly to spend on something other than my suv payment. One less bill. Extra $400 a month.

The possibilities are endless!

Well, not endless cause I still have other bills to pay and normal expenses to cover and I’d like to create some sort of savings plan but it sure feels like the possibilities are endless because the screws are not being turned quite as tight as they were only yesterday. πŸ™‚

Tomorrow will be my first payday in years and years and years that won’t have a suv payment coming out of it…I can’t wait!

Happy dance time!

Abbotsford Tulip Festival

27 Apr

The other week a friend and I went to the Abbotsford Tulip Festival. I wouldn’t say it really qualifies for the title “festival” since the only thing there is a really big field full of different types and colours of tulips…don’t festivals usually have rides? And food on a stick?

Despite not having the opportunity to buy some form of food on a stick and twirl around a little bit too fast on a sketchy ride we had a good time. πŸ™‚ It was an almost hour ride from where we were to the tulips and who doesn’t like a good car ride?

It was a lovely hot day so sunscreen was of course my best friend, I maaaay have forgotten to put sunscreen on my scalp and I didn’t want to wear a hat so yeah, sunburned scalp, ugh, but not the worst burn I’ve ever had, not even close! Heck, the burn didn’t even peel so not even ranked in the top 20! πŸ˜›

LV Costs What??

21 Apr

I have this totally awesome friend (who is awesome even though she doesn’t read my blog πŸ˜› ) who is getting me a freakin amazing birthday / Christmas present this year. My birthday is Dec 23rd and she never ever gets me combo presents but this one is above and beyond and in reality should be her present to me for two or three years, not just one. She talked to me about it before going ahead with it, which is how I know about it so far in advance, and I was completely blown away.

Well obviously I want to get her something totally beyond anything I have gotten her in the past, because even though it won’t compare with what she is getting me I have to do my best on my smaller budget.

She really loves designer purses and shoes and I had this oh so brilliant idea to get her a designer purse. Now, I don’t know a whole hell of a lot about designer purse brands except that I can’t afford them normally but for this, well, I’ll save, and it’ll be worth it, and really, just how much could they possibly be?

Ha! What silly naive thoughts I had!

I watched a bunch of YouTube videos of people talking about their various designer purses to get an idea of which were good and which were found to be lacking and it seemed Louis Vuitton was super popular and almost never disappointed people. I also learned women collect LV stuff like it is going out of style, or like it is some sort of investment or something which has led me to believe that some people have way too much money and if any of them read this feel free to donate to the cause of moi! πŸ˜‰ lol

After getting it in to my head that I’d get her a LV clutch or something similar I went to the LV website and almost had a heart attack as soon as the page for wallets loaded. The first wallet that popped up was this one…

louis-vuitton-wallet

Want to know how much this wallet costs? Go on, guess, I dare you!

This, the Sarah Wallet is $1030.00, Canadian.

Seriously? For a wallet?!

After the shock dimmed a bit I skimmed through some more of the website and kept blinking in disbelief as I saw the prices scroll by.

I feel so poor now lol

And yeah, I may love my friend to bits and pieces but no way I am getting her a LV anything cuz there is nothing on that site that is a price I can ever afford.

So now I am back to square one for what to get her, I have a couple months so I’m sure I’ll think of something but wow, what an eye opener for how the other half live. πŸ˜›

$18 Jug of Milk

8 Apr

Do you ever do that thing where you go in to the store for one item and come out with a bagful?

That was me this evening, so my intended $2 and change purchase of milk turned in to $18 and change for milk plus some other stuff. *rolls eyes*

This doesn’t happen to me when I go actual grocery shopping, then I go with a list and I get just what is on the list…ok so sure I also sometimes end up with a treat or I buy something I know I’ll need soon that is on sale now but in general, I follow the list.

When I go to buy one or two items though it is like all hell breaks loose with my willpower over choosing what I pick up and next thing you know I’m spending $20 when all I intended to purchase was a bunch of bananas, or like this time, milk.

What’s with that?

My mom does the same thing, so maybe it is genetic? πŸ˜‰ lol

This time I justified some of the items because I didn’t have cash on me and no way was I using my debit card for such a small purchase so I figured hey, buy one or two other things just to make the purchase amount less pathetic but those one or two other things turned in to about 6 things and next thing I know I’m unpacking croissants and cereal and turkey pepperoni and milk and a couple other things on to my stove (I don’t have a kitchen counter) and wondering what the hell I was thinking.

I’d love to say all the items are essentials but who am I kidding? Froot Loops are not essentials…well, essential to my sugar levels and happiness but nutritionally? Not quite! lol Though if I thought on it long enough I’m sure I could find a way to justify them…it is a fortified cereal after all… πŸ˜‰

Chocolate Cake In A Mug

7 Feb

I was having a chocolate cake craving and reverted back to primate level thinking…I neeeeed chocolate. Find chocolate. Kill for chocolate. Chocolate is vital for survival.

Stuff like that… πŸ˜‰

My only options were:

(1) go to the store and buy a cake, which I am too lazy to do

(2) make a cake, which I have the ingredients for but am so not gonna do just to satisfy a craving

(3) google and hope for a better answer

Damn internet, it makes things too easy sometimes!

So I googled chocolate cake in a mug. I don’t know why I did it, over the years I have tried a couple different chocolate cake in mug recipes and they always suck.Β This time though my googling brought me to this…

http://www.tablefortwoblog.com/the-moistest-chocolate-mug-cake/

The blog post swore this chocolate cake in a mug recipe would be moist, and delicious, and better than any of the others I may have tried.

It is simple enough of a recipe so I figured why not give it a go. If it sucks it isn’t too many ingredients wasted and I will have learned my lesson – no more cake in mug recipes!

Well, happy news, the author was correct and it is a deeeeeelicious cake in a mug! As in, so good it easily competes with a full sized home made chocolate cake or a cake bought from the store. I don’t know why this particular combination of ingredients somehow combined to create cake magic but they did and I am oh so grateful for it…while also being aware this is a very dangerous thing I have come across.

With great power comes great responsibility and now that I know I can have an easy serving of chocolate cake whenever I want, well damn, I’m gonna have to use willpower to over ride the cravings and be a good little healthy-lifestyle type of person. Ugh. Not looking forward to that but since it is a problem for another day lets forget about it for now! πŸ˜‰

I was going to post the recipe here but I think it would be better if you follow the above link and check out the blog I found the recipe from, the Chef deserves the visits to her blog after all.

I did however nab a picture from her post so you can see what it looks like, after all, a picture is worth a thousand words! Just remember, it is her picture, and her cake, all I did was copy exactly what she said to do and made chocolate cake magic, Mmm!

Baking Soda Miracles

4 Feb

My mom is coming to visit for a couple of weeks to help me when I am recovering from surgery. I’m looking forward to seeing her but the flip side of the looking-forward emotion is the oh-my-god-this-will-be-the-first-time-a-family-member-sees-where-I-live-I-must-make-my-place-perfect emotion.

Now in reality, perfect is not going to happen, I am in a 750 sq ft basement suite with a low ceiling, no natural light, a shower that won’t stop dripping and no storage or counter space which means no matter how much stuff I get rid of, or how many times I clean, my place always looks cluttered. sigh.

Doesn’t mean I’m not starting to obsess about weird things though!

Like tea stains. I use the same three large mugs in rotation for drinking tea. I drink tea like it is going to run out and I have to get as much of it in to my system as possible before there are no more tea leaves. Seriously, tea addict over here. Which I am fine with because tea is a lovely drink but it does have a tendency to stain mugs even when you clean the mugs daily.

Sooooooo…for some reason this became a thing I was obsessing over. Like my mother was going to be horrified because my tea mugs had tea stains or something… Who do you think I got my tea addiction from? Not like she hasn’t seen a stained mug before! But yeah, couldn’t stop thinking about how no way can I let my mother see my stained tea mugs so I YouTubed and learned that I could bleach them (which didn’t really sit all that well with me) or I could clean them with Baking Soda.

baking soda

Baking Soda?

Apparently I am the only one who didn’t know this trick!

I have Baking Soda on hand for baking and that is it, that is all I have ever used it for but according to the internet, and my mother when I discussed it with her, if you put some Baking Soda in a mug, add boiling water, let it sit until the water is cool and then clean the mug normally boom! Magic happens and the tea stains go away.

Seriously magical.

2016-02-02 16.43.14

Here is the inside of my mug with the Baking Soda on the bottom, you can see the icky stains. Nobody really said how much Baking Soda to put so I guesstimated…

Here you can see me adding the boiling water, look at the bubbles! Science people, it’s an awesome thing! I put the water as high as I could to reach as much of the stains as possible. The chopstick, in case you were wondering, was for stirring it all around so the Baking Soda would dissolve, I thought it would be less disruptive than a spoon… While I was stirring I could actually scrape off the tea stains with the chopstick if I tried which I maaaaay have done for a little bit because it is sort of like picking at peeling paint, oddly satisfying…

So yeah, I let it sit for a while, until the cup felt cool to the touch, rinsed it out, put some dish detergent inside and gave it a good clean (fyi, the Baking Soda makes it kinda slippery so be careful) and boom! It now looks like this…

2016-02-02 21.31.32

Look at that! It looks brand new! A thing of beauty! πŸ™‚

I decided to try the same thing with my travel mug, it is stainless steel and according to the internet gods if I put the Baking Soda and boiling water in the mug, pop the lid on and let it sit for 24 hours the inside of my travel mug will be pristine. How could I not try? I use the mug minimum 4 days a week and even though I clean it all the time I’ve been using it for years and it definitely looks it!

I got a tad overzealous with the stirring though which is when I learned that Baking Soda and boiling water and my stirring with a chopstick can lead to an eruption that has water and Baking Soda bubbles exploding all over my stove top…oops! Why my stove top? Because I don’t have a counter so I do everything on my stove top between the burners.

So yeah, little bit of friendly advice, stir sloooooowly, and gently, super gently, and if you see bubbles stop! Take a bit of a pause and then resume, super duper slowly. Trust me, you’ll be grateful you took the time cause oh wow, sooooo much water spilled over it ended up overflowing over the lip of the stove top on to my kitchen floor…well, mostly onto my feet but then from the feet to the floor.

Now that I have mastered removing tea stains I am on to obsessing about the next thing…oh boy!

Foggy Nights

29 Jan

2016-01-02 21.17.19

I love foggy weather, I find it so peaceful.

Something about the lack of visibility, the muffled sounds, the mood the fog can inspire. Its pretty much the best weather pattern I can think of. πŸ™‚

This is the scene that greeted me as I left work and started walking to where my suv was parked. It was foggier in person, I’m never able to get a good picture of fog, such an elusive thing!

If it wasn’t so late in the evening, and chilly, and I so poorly dressed for the chill I would have gone for a wandering bit of a walk and enjoyed it more. As is I made up stories in my head, inspired by the fog. One of the great things about having an over active imagination is how entertained I am able to keep myself lol

I hope it is foggy again tomorrow…
