Try It Tuesday:Strawberry Rhubarb Pie

14 Jun

So obviously this isn’t the first time I have eaten Strawberry Rhubarb pie, it is just the first time I have eaten this particular pie. It is from M&M Meat Shops and currently costs $9.99. If I remember correctly mine was on sale so it cost a bit less, who doesn’t like a sale? 😉

First off, the finished product does not look nearly as good as the one on the package, the filling doesn’t hold its shape nearly that well. The filling is less chunky and more pureed, if that makes any sense? There is a lattice topping with the pastry but it is pretty lackluster, I mean c’mon, not like it is that hard to make the pie look pretty, this just looked lazy. Or maybe I am too harsh about the presentation of pies, meh, who knows? lol

To bake it you bring your oven to 350C, take the plastic wrapping off the pie, put the pie on a cookie sheet and pop it in to the oven for 25 to 30 minutes, then take it out and let it sit for 20 minutes. I am not certain why it needs such a long cooling down period, maybe they are worried about people being burned? lol Nah. I think it is most likely to give the filling time to solidify enough that it doesn’t completely ooze out when you cut a slice.

The flavour was nice, had a stronger strawberry flavour than rhubarb and the strawberry seemed to more closely resemble jam rather than freshly chopped strawberries. Hell, I would have settled for frozen strawberries, thawed and cut, before being put in the filling but I guess I am asking too much from a commercially mass produced pie.

Even with the 20 minute cooling off period the pie was still warm-ish so I topped my piece with some ice cream and settled down to enjoy. 🙂

It’s not that it wasn’t an okay pie, but I wouldn’t really recommend paying the ten bucks for it when you can find a better quality pie at a bakery or one of those stands that pop up with fresh home made pies for sale at completely reasonable prices. Or hell, you could always make one. Not to boast but I have made a better strawberry rhubarb pie from scratch wiiiiiith a more complex lattice top and if I can do it so can you!

In a pinch I guess it will suffice but you can find better so my advice to you is to keep searching! 🙂

Try It Tuesday:Ancient Grains with Millet

7 Jun

I found something new at M&M Meat Shops, well new to me anyways, people who shop there often probably found this ages ago. It is a two serving dish of Ancient Grains with Millet and Vegetable Blend in Tomato Sauce…long enough name? Eesh. lol

It is a microwaveable dish, you just put this frozen squat tube shaped thing that doesn’t really look like food in the microwave and cook it on high for 3 minutes, then you squish it around with a spoon, microwave for 2 more minutes, stir, and let sit for 2 minutes. Easy peasy.

It costs $2.99 and contains millet, steel-cut oats, brown rice, red and white quinoa with carrots, kale and onions in a tomato and roasted garlic sauce.

I bought this before I went low carb so it has been sitting in my freezer for a little while. I wasn’t feeling great today, not sick, just sorta “off” and I couldn’t face my normal food, all that protein, ugh, not today thanks. So I went searching for something that would most likely be gentle on my tummy and came across this.

I forgot to take a pic to show you the unattractive frozen blob it is prior to being popped in the microwave so here it is after the first 3 minutes…

Aaaaaaand here it is once it is cooked and covered in salsa…

2016-06-02 14.37.12

Now yes, I realize I should have taken a picture before the salsa got put on top so you can see how it actually looks but I was only intending to put a small amount of salsa on so it shouldn’t have been a problem. However, I maaaay have gotten distracted and tilted the salsa jar too far and boom! salsa all over the ancient grains and millet hence ancient grains with millet and vegetable blend in tomato sauce covered in salsa…its like my own version of the dish! lol

It is quite bland, so the salsa made it tasty, you definitely need to put some sort of sauce or topping on this.

Nutrition wise it isn’t horrible but it isn’t great. Depending on what type of meal plan you follow this may or may not work for you. I would have expected it to have a higher fibre content considering all the grains and oats and whatnot that is in it but what do I know? I expected it to have an actual tomato sauce and it didn’t have that…advertising lies! 😉

If you are okay with eating carbs and want to add some grains to your meal plan it would probably be a good side for you, I bet it would be nice paired with some salmon or even a seasoned chicken breast. 🙂 For me though I probably won’t buy it again, too many carbs, not enough protein, and too bland for my taste. Not that I mind adding salsa or other condiments to things but I would prefer not to so I can save my calories for something more interesting…like cake! lol 😉

A Teeny Tiny Fire

14 Feb

Bright ‘n early this morning I was on the water enjoying my dragon boat practice. It was cold, but I loved it, weird I know lol 😛

Then, I came home and proceeded to get ready for work. Part of my getting ready process was making lunch – to eat before going to work, not to take with me.

I wanted something substantial, and well really, I wanted something with eggs lol but I’d had two hard boiled eggs prior to practice and that is one egg more than my daily egg allowance sooooooo no egg dishes for moi. Instead I popped a Ricotta and Spinach stuffed chicken breast from M&M Meat Shops in to the oven and boiled some whole wheat pasta. I don’t know why I made pasta as the side dish instead of veggies, shrug, I just seemed to want pasta. Probably cause I had bought a jar of alfredo & garlic sauce and really wanted to try it lol.

Anyways! It was time to drain the pasta so I did what I’ve done countless times, I took a towel wrapped it around one side of the pot and used it to protect my hands from the handles since they had gotten hot. I have used a towel every time I’ve needed to pick up a pot with hot handles for years and never had a problem. Well, this time I had a minor incident…

See, the towel slipped and touched the burner, big deal right? Wrong! The towel touched the burner and all of a sudden…fire! Actual fire! Not just singed, there were flames, flames! So there I am, holding a towel around a pot full of cooked pasta and the towel is on fire, not exactly a situation I expected to be in lol I didn’t want to lose the cooked pasta so I ever so gently put the pot down (on a different burner) then put the on fire towel in to the sink and soaked it with water. Yay for water solving the problem of my towel being on fire! Boo for ruining my towel.

I’m kinda bummed, I really like that towel, it is part of a set that my sister bought me two Christmases ago. Now it looks like this…

My scorched towel.

My scorched towel.

You’d think the damage would look worse considering there were flames involved. Even though the damage doesn’t look that bad the towel is ruined, sigh. Is it weird I am more upset about the towel being ruined than causing a fire in my kitchen? I think this just proves my point that some people aren’t meant to be in the kitchen and I obviously should be wealthy so I can have a cook, it’d be safer for everybody! 😉

Blackberries, Tattoos and Weight Loss

3 Jul

So it has been a busy couple days; yesterday I went shopping and came away with a Blackberry Bold and today after work I went shopping and came away with an inner wrist tattoo…ah the things we do to ourselves. When did we stop spending all our money on shoes? lol. The reason I am telling you this is because to look at my posts I am obsessed with Weight Watchers, you’d think my life revolved around it…sadly, it kinda does.

I was out tonight with a friend, KL, and we wanted to grab a bite to eat before going to a movie. KL wanted to hit up this nice looking sushi place and I had to go to Subway…that’s right, I said had. I pre-calculated my points so I knew what I would be tallying up if I ate the already chosen sub whereas if I went for sushi I’d be guessing and I know I would have eaten over my points. sigh. I sat with KL while she ate and it looked and smelled sooooo good but not one little bite went past my lips. While I am marginally happy about my apparently increasing willpower when it comes to food I am sad that I couldn’t partake in the sushi feast.

You are supposed to be able to eat anything you want on Weight Watchers but that’s a bit of  a lie, I couldn’t have eaten what I wanted at that sushi restaurant not without using a ridiculous amount of flex points. I  have gradually been cutting out of my life foods that don’t fall in to the points realm, Almond Roca (3 pieces = 6 points) – in my opinion not worth it so I have cut them out. I will miss them but I’d rather be skinny then eat Almond Roca. But sushi??? I have given up so many foods already and it looks like the list is just going to keep getting longer.

So now it is almost midnight, I am freakin tired and am I sleeping? Nope I am doing laundry and worrying about tomorrow because tomorrow is….dun dun dun…Weigh In Day *insert scary music here* Will I lose weight? Will I gain weight? Will I stay the same? Will the pants fit any differently, and if so a good or a bad different? I want to know but I am scared to find out; what if I have been doing all this work (and it is work!) and nothing has come of it? I know I have to be patient, I keep trying to remind myself of that, maybe this first week weigh in I won’t lose anything, maybe it will take longer to get results but I am a result oriented person and I need to see results to keep me motivated. Will I be able to keep going if the scale doesn’t show I have lost weight? I guess there is nothing to do about it until tomorrow when I weigh myself and see what my reaction is to whatever that damn digital screen tells me.

So here’s my food for the day:

1 bagel = 3 points

1 tbsp light cream cheese = 1 point

1 banana = 2 points

1 Shrimp and Scallop Pasta Bowl from M&M Meath Shops = 6 points

2 triangles of Laughing Cow Light Cheese = 1 point

1/2 small Blenz Fruitchillo with yogurt = 4 points

6″ Subway Turkey sub on 9 grain whole wheat = 6 points

extra stuff on sub (cheese, light may, mustard) = 4 points

1 package popcorn = 1 point

That puts me at a total of…28

Aw shit, how’d that happen? Admittedly some of the points are estimated so maybe I didn’t do as badly as I calculated but maybe I did worse? And the day before weigh in day! Argh! The sub is 6 points, that’s taking the nutritional info from the Subway site but their info doesn’t include the light mayo, mustard and cheese I got put on so I had to guestimate how many extra points that is. And the Blenz drink, well, the Blenz website is not as helpful as I would like for nutritional info, sigh. All their calculations are based on the medium sized drink…I had a small and only drank half of that! I have no idea how many points that is so I took the 9 points the medium drink is and pared it back a bit. shrug. It’s the best I can do.

I also broke a cardinal rule, oh dear, never ever eat anything salty the last couple days before weigh in day cause you’ll retain water…and what did I do? I ate popcorn while sitting here typing, dammit! I needed a snack though and it seemed perfect, wasn’t till I was eating it I realized the mistake I was making. *rolls eyes* Maybe today I was trying to sabotage myself so that if I fail tomorrow on the scale I have built in excuses (oh, I probably did lose weight but I am retaining water from the popcorn so the scale doesn’t reflect it) Someone needs to smack me tomorrow if I write something like that down…that sounds like a joke but I mean it! I have a horrible habit of self sabotaging myself and to that I say No More!!!

Now, I am off to tend to the tattoo, hopefully the next time I type I will be a couple pounds lighter! 🙂
