Food Huggers Review

20 May

I bought this weird Food Huggers thing ages ago for avocados and then stopped buying avocados, so it has been sitting in my kitchen all this time…depressed, alone, not being used, adrift and without meaning in it’s life…its sad really. To make it up to the little avocado Food Hugger I did the only humane thing I could think of…I bought avocados.

Oh the sacrifices I make in life *big epic sigh* πŸ˜‰

So this is what it looks like…obviously.

It comes with two sizes in the package, the light green is the more realistic size, the dark green is to make you envious of places in the world that apparently get gigantic avocados in their stores. I have already donated the dark green one because no joke, I have never seen an avocado that would be large enough for that hugger, especially since these things are supposed to have a snug fit. Don’t think yoga pants snug, think leggings snug.

The idea behind this creation is that you can keep half your avocado fresh for longer than without. I didn’t really believe that claim but I will admit to being a sucker for tupperware and similar items that are shaped like the food they are meant to hold so really, I was doomed the moment I saw this thing. I am after all the person who bought a tomato shaped tomato holder and who keeps convincing herself she doesn’t reeeeally need the onion shaped onion holder even though it would look so cute in my fridge!

The avocado food hugger has some limitations, the main one being finding an avocado that ya know, fits. The hugger is supposed to be super snug on your avocado, it needs to make a seal. The first time I tried it my avocado was too small so there was no actual seal made and this was the result…

Not exactly what you want your over priced avocado to look like the next day. I would have done better to wrap it in saran wrap but hey, ya gotta live and learn right?

Next time I bought avocados I managed to find not one, but two avocados that fit in to this thing, yay me!

Here is how it looks when it is properly fit on to an avocado…

You can see where I push in with my thumb there is actually quite a bit of space where the pit is. The Food Hugger itself got a really good seal around the peel of the avocado, thought it was a bit of a battle getting it on there. I say battle like it was this big epic thing when really it was me, cursing under my breath as the avocado kept almost slipping completely out of my hands while I tried to cram it inside a green sorta stretchy avocado condom.

I guess the air in the pit area didn’t matter too much because the next day that half of the avocado looked like this…

avocado 3

Not bad at all. Sure, I lost some of the avocado to the inside of the hugger, but not too much, and yeah there is some browning of the avocado but c’mon, you can’t expect magic to happen, this is just a green silicone food hugger, not a fairy sprinkling fairy dust over everything.

The second avocado I ended up leaving in the hugger, in the fridge, for a couple days. Oops! It didn’t end well. When I took the hugger off the avocado there was mold around the edge of the pit where it meets the flesh of the avocado, there was excessive darkness to the avocado, basically, it was not edible and in to the compost it went.

That was a sad day for me. *sniffle*

In general I think the Food Hugger for avocados is fine, it sure makes the half of the avocado you put in the fridge look cuter than if you wrapped it in saran wrap, and there is less waste since it is washable and I don’t know about you but I tend to throw out saran wrap once I take it off of whatever I wrapped it around. So yeah, environmentally, it is probably the better option, but sadly it didn’t extend the life of my avocado past what the saran wrap was able to do.

It did however give me a good excuse to buy avocados; for that alone I think I am happy I bought it! πŸ˜‰

Cooking With A Chef

6 Feb

On Wednesday a friend of mine and I got together for lunch. She did me an awesome favour a couple weeks ago and I wanted to treat her for lunch as a thank you. She suggested we get together and cook something instead and since it was her thank you I said yup.

We went back and forth for a while on what to make and eventually settled on my brother’s Black Bean Stew recipe which omg, amazing! My brother cooks as a hobby but he puts a lot of time and attention in to it, and it helps he is brilliant at everything he attempts, so when he comes up with something it is always good. πŸ™‚

Christmas of 2007 he brought over a pot of this black bean stew for Christmas Eve dinner and I loved it so much he gave me the recipe. Well ok, I badgered him for it, but let’s not get all picky about things k?

I’ve made it a couple times and it always turns out great.

I bought enough ingredients to double the recipe so we’d each have some for lunch and then left overs for freezing…or in her case left overs to feed her family.

She is a Chef, and an awesome one at that, so while I wasn’t nervous about cooking with her, I was certain she’d be amused and or irritated with how I am in a kitchen. She is one of those amazingly efficient human beings that always make me look like a clumsy incompetent person but oh well, shrug. She actually took over the chopping of the onions because (1) I am a slow chopper and (2) they were making my eyes water so much I couldn’t see through the tears lol

We followed the recipe to the letter but then added some additional seasoning at the end because it was a bit bland, I think I didn’t put in enough tobasco sauce…maybe? I dunno. It is the first time it has come out bland but her additional seasonings made it all better. She gave me some random cooking tips while we went along but for the most part let me run the show. We worked well as a team. πŸ™‚

While we were cooking she said nobody every cooks for her or really invites her over for a meal because she is a Chef and people get intimidated by that. I find that sad. Food is such an integral part of society and social gatherings and nobody ever invites her over for a home cooked meal or brings her something home made to eat? What’s wrong with people!

Having said that, I’ve never brought her anything home made either. Partly because I don’t really cook and also because I figure anything I can make she can make so much better why insult her palate with my paltry offerings?

I’m gonna change that right now!

We had so much fun cooking and hanging out, more fun than I think we would have had if we went out. And she doesn’t care that I’m not a professional cook, she was legit grateful for someone else working in the kitchen…even if she did have to take over the chopping of the onions lol

Next time we are going to make lasagna! Mmm!

The above shows the black bean stew before I covered it with toppings, and then my bowl with all the toppings. As you can see I like sour cream and cheese and avocado lol Usually I eat this with sour cream and maybe the cheese, depending what I have. She happened to have avocado as well and as it was near death we decided to each take half so as not to waste it. Cause a wasted avocado is a sad sad thing.

Breakfast Sandwich

16 Jan

My favourite meal of the day tends to be the breakfast sandwich that I make 5 out of 7 days a week. The main ingredients generally don’t change, there is almost always bread, turkey bacon, egg and a slice of cheese. The rest of the ingredients fluctuate depending on what I have on hand and what I feel like eating. I have a couple different sauces I swap between, I may add avocado, or miracle whip (light of course lol), cream cheese, salsa…the list could go on for quite a while lol

Todays breakfast sandwich was quite yum and I thought I’d share it with you. πŸ™‚

On a whim I bought an Asiago Cheese Bread the other night, which means I now have to eat Asiago Cheese bread every day until I finish it or risk it going stale and have my money wasted lol I decided to lightly toast two slices of the cheese bread, then top it like so:

chive & onion cream cheese

smooshed avocado

turkey bacon

white cheese

over easy egg

A Wonderful Way To Start the Day

I suppose it doesn’t look as good as it tasted, but it was quite good. πŸ™‚ I cut the egg in half so it would fit nicely on both pieces of bread, same with the cheese. It all worked out quite well and I’m figuring on making another version tomorrow, probably the last day I’ll be able to eat the bread before it goes too stale to bite in to lol πŸ˜›

Stouffer’s Saute Sensations

9 Jan

Last week I came across a sale item at Safeway that I decided to try, it is the Stouffer’s Saute Sensations. I chose the Grilled Chicken Teriyaki and oh man was it tasty!

2015-01-01 16.44.13

It was on sale for about $6 and each package gives you two servings, even I can do the math that tells me my meal cost $3 – pretty decent!

The package contains brown rice and a medley of tender vegetables…that is a direct quote from the bag lol

Per serving (so half the bag) is 260 calories, 5g fat, 42g carbs, 3g fibre and 16g protein. So yeah, high in carbs but ok everywhere else, in my opinion anyways. πŸ™‚

It tasted really good and one serving is plenty, I wasn’t left feeling hungry or deprived and it kept me filled up for hours, always nice when that happens. After I cooked it all I split it in half in the pan, put half on my plate and let the other half cool before putting it in a container to take to work the next day for my dinner. It heated up nicely in the microwave, the chicken didn’t dry out and the veggies weren’t overly droopy. Oh and the veggies kept their bright colour, which never happens when I make a stir-fry type dish from scratch…what’s with that?

It looked so good it impressed the people at work and one of the guys now thinks I am a good cook lol Since technically nobody asked me if I cooked it I wasn’t lying when I let it be implied I did in fact cook my meal and didn’t just pour it from a bag and heat it up lol

When I ate it at home I added half a diced avocado to the top, not because I thought the dish wouldn’t taste good on it’s own but because my avocado was at the stage of “eat me now or by tomorrow I will be brown and useless”, I don’t care to be threatened by avocados but whatcha gonna do? They always win!

a yummy and healthy dinner

a yummy and healthy dinner

I tried to push the avocado to the side so you could see the food from the bag unimpeded.

All in all I was really impressed with the meal. I don’t know what it’s regular price is so I can’t say if I would buy it all the time, but on sale it was definitely worth it! Something to keep an eye out for. πŸ™‚

I Literally Missed The Boat

20 May

My day was going so well, slept in, had a yummy breakfast wrap, finished a book I am reading, chilled with the cat, got ready in plenty of time to leave for dragon boat practice aaaaaaand that is where the good day ended, sigh.

I couldn’t find my keys. How is it possible I couldn’t find my keys?? I put them in the same spot every time I come home but apparently yesterday I didn’t put them in their spot and I got screwed over today. double sigh.

It took so long to find them I missed practice, I literally missed the boat, by about an hour and a half. Oops? I felt like such an idiot. I tore apart pretty much everything in my apartment trying to find them, it was ridiculous. Having to text a team mate to say I wasn’t going to be able to make practice because I couldn’t find my keys…who does that?? *rolls eyes*

When the latest time I could leave and still get to practice came and went I was slightly less frantic in my searching, not like finding them would get me to the boat on time anymore, but obviously I had to keep looking otherwise I’d be in the same predicament tomorrow. I figured if I was tearing the place apart I might as well clean it while I was tearing so by the end of the night I had a clean apartment and keys. Yay! lol

I am going to pretend that the cleaning counted as some sort of exercise, even if I didn’t work up a sweat lol Right after I was done I did a bunch of squats so I feel that should count for something, at least a little something…maybe?

My brekkie wrap, Mmm!

My brekkie wrap, Mmm!

Some info about the breakfast wrap I ate today, it was super delish! There is one triangle of laughing cow cheese spread on a whole wheat tortilla, then a slice of white cheese (don’t judge! I like cheese! lol), two slices of turkey bacon, lettuce, salsa, half an avocado and an over easy egg. It doesn’t stay closed unless I am holding it which is why the pic is of the wrap when open lol The avocado was a massive treat! I have a bunch of foods I don’t buy anymore cause I am strapped for cash and avocados are one of them, this one was given to me by a friend yesterday and boy did I enjoy it! πŸ™‚

Stir Fry Sunday: A Day Late

27 Jan

Alrighty, so it’s not that I didn’t want to make a stir fry last night for dinner, I like the idea of Stir Fry Sunday buuuuuut after work I had a long phone convo, when that was over I wasn’t hungry so thought I’d wait twenty minutes or so before making dinner and I uh, hmm, kinda…well…I fell asleep…oops? πŸ˜› By the time I woke up from my unplanned nap I was in no mood to cook, or eat. I eventually had toast and some warm almond milk with nutmeg and even that seemed like a lot!

Soooooo, I made stir fry tonight, yay! A delayed-by-one-day Stir Fry Sunday! πŸ™‚

This weeks stir fry had the same frozen stir fry veggies as last week (why wouldn’t they? the package is already open and I gotta use em up lol), extra water chestnuts cause I have a weakness for them, mushrooms, fresh red and yellow peppers thinly sliced, beefless tips, shrimp, peanuts and a sweet and sour sauce. This was all served on top of vermicelli noodles. Mmm! Well, I think it was Mmm! lol You may not, shrug, but that’s cool, we all have different tastes after all.

I was a little let down by the vermicelli noodles, the package said put in boiling water for a couple minutes then add to the stir fy pan so that is what I did. The noodles tasted good but were so entangled with each other when I put them in the pan they didn’t really mix well with the rest of the ingredients, nor did they move around the pan easily. I’ll keep using them, mostly because I love that particular type of noodle, but next time I might not put them in the pan after boiling them, I might put them directly on the plate then top them with the vegg mix. I’ll keep trying new things till I figure it out. πŸ™‚

I was happy with the veggies, how could I not be? lol There was a nice combo and I love veggies so it was a win-win.

I am oh-so proud of the shrimp! As in ridiculously proud! I was back to worrying I’d screw it up, give myself food poisoning or maybe over cooking them to the point of them not being edible buuuuut I did neither! How awesome is that?? I put the amount I wanted in to a ziploc bag and had them sit under running cold water for 7 minutes (as the package instructed), then tossed them in to the pan when the veggies were at an almost done stage and go fig, it worked…weird…but sweeeeeet!

The beefless tips, you’re probably thinking that is a typo lol but nope, it is not! They are made by a company called Gardein (www.gardein.com). The product looks like cubes of beef that you sautee, they have a texture of tender beef and almost taste like beef, kinda…I tried them on a whim years ago (I wanted beef but was scared to cook it and poison myself lol) so I tried these, figured I couldn’t mess up a fake meat product and so far I haven’t. Each time I cook them they turn out perfect even though each time I cook them for a different amount of time and have cooked them in varying ways. Versatile, I like that in a fake meat lol. I randomly tossed some in to the pan (as a back up in case I messed up the shrimp) but ended up with the bonus of having two protein sources in my stir fry cause both the shrimp and fake beef were great.

Stir Fry Numero 2

Stir Fry Numero 2

On a whim, and after I snapped the above pic, I decided to put half an avocado on top. Why did I do this? Cause I had half an avocado in my fridge and didn’t think it would last another day lol. I figured it’d either taste good or I wouldn’t like the combo of flavours so I’d eat the avocado pieces first and as alone as I could get them on the fork and it wouldn’t contaminate the rest of the stir fry. Turns out I liked the flavour combo, avocado makes everything better! πŸ™‚

I’d like to think that even with the one day delay my second Stir Fry Sunday was a success…it must be, I ate until I was stuffed lol πŸ˜›

My “Egg McMuffin”

11 Jan
my version of an egg McMuffin

my version of an egg McMuffin

I keep seeing ads for McDonald’s Egg McMuffins and those ads make me want one cause they look soooooo tasty! Forget the part about my not eating that form of meat (pork? no thank you! lol) and also forget the part about how I don’t eat fast food anymore…doesn’t mean the ads don’t work on me lol

I decided to make my own version of an egg mcmuffin and not to sound cocky but I think what I came up with is even better then what McD’s makes! *gasp* shocking I know! πŸ˜‰

I take a piece of toast, put a slice of havarti cheese with jalapenos on top, then layer with turkey bacon, sauteed sliced mushrooms, an over easy with the yolk still runny egg and half an avocado sliced on top.

Holy crap it was tasty! No idea at all if it is anything resembling a healthy meal but the calories were soooo worth it lol

Salsa and Tuna, Who Knew?

22 Nov

I may have slightly, kind of, maaaaaaybe forgot to cook some form of protein for dinner before I left for work *bats eyes innocently* Which means of course no dinner while I was at work. Lemme tell ya, that sucked.

It wouldn’t have been as bad if I worked somewhere that didn’t have a fully stocked kitchen that produces gourmet meals twice a day. Oh, and don’t forget the large open container of Ferrero Rocher that was for any and all staff to nibble from. Those are one of my all time favourite chocolates in case you were wondering, so yummmmm!

Back to the food.

I didn’t even read the menu at work today cause I didn’t want to know! The more I know about what masterpieces are being made in there the more I have to fight against the lure of the food. sigh. Knowledge is not always power. πŸ˜‰

I did have to go in to the kitchen eventually, for actual work stuff, but after the kitchen staff were done and the yummy smells were no more. However, there are always, and I mean always! freshly baked cookies in that kitchen. So mean!

The most random thing kept me from grabbing a cookie…on the Lose It! app I use to track my calories and exercise there is a bar graph, if you stay at or under your allowed calories for the day the bar is green. If you go over your calories the bar goes red, as in danger! danger! you are heading to the dark side! take that food outta your mouth! (I always imagine that in a robotic voice for some reason) I really didn’t want the line for today to turn red, I also didn’t want to have to confess to you my dear readers that I messed up, again. So, no cookie for me. No Ferrero Rocher for me. No dinner cooked by the chef at work for me. Let’s just say there were a lot of food options today and none were for me. *rolls eyes* What’s scary is it is just going to keep getting worse because it’s that time of year, *sing song voice* You know what I am talking about! The time of year where it seems you can’t turn around without coming face to plate with something deeeelicious but ridiculously high in calories. Chocolate. Cookies. Cakes. Puddings. Sauces. Fudge. Candies…and sooooo much more!…not that I’m focusing on it or anything… πŸ˜‰

For my oh so late in the day dinner I tried something new. A friend told me that my taste bud savior while eating Paleo would be salsa. Now, I’m not a hater of salsa, but I also wouldn’t say I was a lover of it. It is one of those things that is there, and is good for the occasional nacho-fest but otherwise? Meh. I’m not that bothered. I trust this friend though so salsa now lives in my kitchen. I decided to open a can of tuna, mostly because I bought an avocado and this morning when I felt it up it was at the perfect-eat-me-today-or-I-will-go-bad-overnight stage. Usually I mix tuna with light mayo but my random burst of inspiration had me mix a can of tuna with 4 tbls of salsa, I then topped it with diced tomato and half an avocado. Surprisingly it was good. Oh, and I don’t mean “good but I’ll never eat it again” but actually “good, I’m gonna hafta buy another can of tuna soon”.

avocados...can't trust em!

avocados…can’t trust em!

Sidenote: when I say I ate the can of tuna what I mean is I ate most of the can of tuna but a portion of it is automatically given to the cat or I forfeit my right to exist in his presence and he will kill me overnight. Anyone with a cat understand this. πŸ˜‰

what would happen if my cat didn't get his share of tuna...

what would happen if my cat didn’t get his share of tuna…
