Stouffer’s Saute Sensations

9 Jan

Last week I came across a sale item at Safeway that I decided to try, it is the Stouffer’s Saute Sensations. I chose the Grilled Chicken Teriyaki and oh man was it tasty!

2015-01-01 16.44.13

It was on sale for about $6 and each package gives you two servings, even I can do the math that tells me my meal cost $3 – pretty decent!

The package contains brown rice and a medley of tender vegetables…that is a direct quote from the bag lol

Per serving (so half the bag) is 260 calories, 5g fat, 42g carbs, 3g fibre and 16g protein. So yeah, high in carbs but ok everywhere else, in my opinion anyways. 🙂

It tasted really good and one serving is plenty, I wasn’t left feeling hungry or deprived and it kept me filled up for hours, always nice when that happens. After I cooked it all I split it in half in the pan, put half on my plate and let the other half cool before putting it in a container to take to work the next day for my dinner. It heated up nicely in the microwave, the chicken didn’t dry out and the veggies weren’t overly droopy. Oh and the veggies kept their bright colour, which never happens when I make a stir-fry type dish from scratch…what’s with that?

It looked so good it impressed the people at work and one of the guys now thinks I am a good cook lol Since technically nobody asked me if I cooked it I wasn’t lying when I let it be implied I did in fact cook my meal and didn’t just pour it from a bag and heat it up lol

When I ate it at home I added half a diced avocado to the top, not because I thought the dish wouldn’t taste good on it’s own but because my avocado was at the stage of “eat me now or by tomorrow I will be brown and useless”, I don’t care to be threatened by avocados but whatcha gonna do? They always win!

a yummy and healthy dinner

a yummy and healthy dinner

I tried to push the avocado to the side so you could see the food from the bag unimpeded.

All in all I was really impressed with the meal. I don’t know what it’s regular price is so I can’t say if I would buy it all the time, but on sale it was definitely worth it! Something to keep an eye out for. 🙂

Stir Fry Sunday: A Day Late

27 Jan

Alrighty, so it’s not that I didn’t want to make a stir fry last night for dinner, I like the idea of Stir Fry Sunday buuuuuut after work I had a long phone convo, when that was over I wasn’t hungry so thought I’d wait twenty minutes or so before making dinner and I uh, hmm, kinda…well…I fell asleep…oops? 😛 By the time I woke up from my unplanned nap I was in no mood to cook, or eat. I eventually had toast and some warm almond milk with nutmeg and even that seemed like a lot!

Soooooo, I made stir fry tonight, yay! A delayed-by-one-day Stir Fry Sunday! 🙂

This weeks stir fry had the same frozen stir fry veggies as last week (why wouldn’t they? the package is already open and I gotta use em up lol), extra water chestnuts cause I have a weakness for them, mushrooms, fresh red and yellow peppers thinly sliced, beefless tips, shrimp, peanuts and a sweet and sour sauce. This was all served on top of vermicelli noodles. Mmm! Well, I think it was Mmm! lol You may not, shrug, but that’s cool, we all have different tastes after all.

I was a little let down by the vermicelli noodles, the package said put in boiling water for a couple minutes then add to the stir fy pan so that is what I did. The noodles tasted good but were so entangled with each other when I put them in the pan they didn’t really mix well with the rest of the ingredients, nor did they move around the pan easily. I’ll keep using them, mostly because I love that particular type of noodle, but next time I might not put them in the pan after boiling them, I might put them directly on the plate then top them with the vegg mix. I’ll keep trying new things till I figure it out. 🙂

I was happy with the veggies, how could I not be? lol There was a nice combo and I love veggies so it was a win-win.

I am oh-so proud of the shrimp! As in ridiculously proud! I was back to worrying I’d screw it up, give myself food poisoning or maybe over cooking them to the point of them not being edible buuuuut I did neither! How awesome is that?? I put the amount I wanted in to a ziploc bag and had them sit under running cold water for 7 minutes (as the package instructed), then tossed them in to the pan when the veggies were at an almost done stage and go fig, it worked…weird…but sweeeeeet!

The beefless tips, you’re probably thinking that is a typo lol but nope, it is not! They are made by a company called Gardein (www.gardein.com). The product looks like cubes of beef that you sautee, they have a texture of tender beef and almost taste like beef, kinda…I tried them on a whim years ago (I wanted beef but was scared to cook it and poison myself lol) so I tried these, figured I couldn’t mess up a fake meat product and so far I haven’t. Each time I cook them they turn out perfect even though each time I cook them for a different amount of time and have cooked them in varying ways. Versatile, I like that in a fake meat lol. I randomly tossed some in to the pan (as a back up in case I messed up the shrimp) but ended up with the bonus of having two protein sources in my stir fry cause both the shrimp and fake beef were great.

Stir Fry Numero 2

Stir Fry Numero 2

On a whim, and after I snapped the above pic, I decided to put half an avocado on top. Why did I do this? Cause I had half an avocado in my fridge and didn’t think it would last another day lol. I figured it’d either taste good or I wouldn’t like the combo of flavours so I’d eat the avocado pieces first and as alone as I could get them on the fork and it wouldn’t contaminate the rest of the stir fry. Turns out I liked the flavour combo, avocado makes everything better! 🙂

I’d like to think that even with the one day delay my second Stir Fry Sunday was a success…it must be, I ate until I was stuffed lol 😛

Stir Fry Sunday

19 Jan

I officially declare Sunday: Stir Fry Sunday! *insert parade here* 🙂

I don’t know why but I got the random idea to make stir fry for dinner tonight, I made a list of all the various ingredients I needed, hit up the grocery store on the way home from work and bam! cooking ensued! wOOt!

Because I was down about not getting to film the commercial today I wanted to make sure I did something that I would enjoy, well, either enjoy the act of or the result of during the time I would have been filming. I don’t particularly like cooking but I do enjoy stir fry, and eating lol I used to make stir fry fairly often years ago but I don’t really remember what I did back then so I was approaching this task as a newbie.

Normally I don’t use raw meat, unless it is frozen and requires minimal touching. Raw meat = yuch! Also, if I am not throwing a frozen chicken breast or frozen piece of fish in the oven then my protein usually comes from tofu, fake meat, eggs, things like that. I am always so certain I will under cook the meat and give myself food poisoning and duuuude, that would suck! …obviously lol…Well, today a friend gave me a look, you know the look, the kind that is clearly labeling you as a dumbass in their eyes when I told her I don’t cook raw chicken, she then gave me a thawed, raw, icky chicken breast, told me to cube it, throw it in the wok first with a bit of oil and I’d be fine.

Since I can’t lose face over this I…cooked the chicken! *gasp*  I’m sure to you this is ho-hum but to me it’s a big deal cause ick, I had to touch raw meat, and cut it, and cook it well enough I didn’t get sick from it…that’s a lot! I also then had to bleach the sink, knife and cutting board cause there was raw chicken touching all those surfaces, or the juices from the raw chicken, and now I envision salmonella spawning all around my kitchen. Double ick! 😛

I used a bit too much oil, I drained a whole bunch before putting any veggies in the pan, but other than that the cooking went really well! I tossed in some frozen veggies from the Europe’s Best brand, there were orange carrots, snow peas, yellow carrots, water chestnuts, red peppers, baby corn and bean sprouts in that mix. I then added more water chestnuts (you can never have too many! lol), raw sliced red and yellow peppers, sliced mushrooms and at the very end some baby spinach (I just warmed it up, didn’t cook it), oh and I put some stir fry sauce I bought at Safeway in there for flavour. For plating it, I put the veggie and chicken mix over some brown rice, sprinkled a bit of soy sauce on and topped with peanuts.

Holy cannoli it was gooood! 😀

I made that! whoa!

I made that! whoa!

There is even more of a bonus to this delish meal, because I didn’t measure anything, just added stuff, I made enough for two servings, as you can see in the picture, so I now have lunch for tomorrow sitting in my fridge. How great is that? I have no idea if this was healthy or not since I didn’t measure anything, just poured in amounts of things that looked good lol I figure it can’t be too too horrible since it was a meal made up of mostly veggies, with some protein and a bit of starch. There is probably a healthier alternative to brown rice but I don’t know what that is. But hey, that is what Stir Fry Sunday is for! To experiment with different combinations of things on a weekly basis, fair warning, this could get weird lol

I had a distressing discovery when cooking, I no longer have my wok…I have no clue where it went to and I’m kinda cranky about that. I had a really nice wok, I can’t remember getting rid of it, and I can’t imagine why I would have, but since it is gone I must have decided at some point to give it away, sigh, stupid stupid move! This was made in a large frying pan and it just wasn’t the same, even though it did turn out delish lol

I’m going to wait to buy a new wok, see how consistent I am with Stir Fry Sunday, I figure if I make stir fry weekly for a month or so then that justifies buying a new wok, until then the frying pan it is! Which makes me a bit ghetto but oh well lol

I Forgot Wordless Wednesday!

13 Dec

Geez, it would have only been my second Wordless Wednesday and I forgot it! Does this mean I am destined to not do Wordless Wednesday in the future? Nah, I think it’s just cause it’s a new thing so I have to get used to it…I hope lol

Yesterday was Wednesday, duh, so I was supposed to take pictures of what I did and ate that day so I could show you instead of tell you…well, that was an epic fail if ever there was one, sigh. Too bad too since I had an awesome lunch! I was at the mall with a friend and we stopped at the food court for lunch. Now don’t go getting all “uh-oh, you screwed up didn’t you??” cause I didn’t! So there! 😛

I went to one of those grill places where you pick your veggies and protein from fresh raw selections then they grill it in front of you using a hot grill (shocking huh?) and a bit of water so it doesn’t stick, they then add the sauce of your choosing (I chose teriyaki) and was pleasantly surprised at the minimal amount of sauce the guy used, then it is served with some rice. Not so bad huh? I was heavy on the veggies but did put some crab, tofu and beef in there cause hey, ya gotta have some protein! I can’t remember all the veggies I chose, I love places like this though cause sure I can make a stir fry at home but somewhere like this has every veggie you could think of so you’ll have way more variety for your meal. I won’t remember them all but I know I had: carrots, zucchini, green beans, water chestnuts, baby corn, pineapple, bok choy, mushrooms, yellow and red peppers, celery…hmm, I know I am missing something, meh, it’ll come to me later probably. I also put some peanuts on there cause I am weak and I love peanuts in stir fry. 😀 All in all tasty and (I think) healthy.

The rest of the day was spent hanging with my friend at the mall, we were Christmas shopping, then coming back to the apartment to check on the poor cat. Oy! The day prior was his first visit to the vet, er, first visit since I have known him that is, I’m sure he was taken prior to our meeting. Well let me tell ya, this cat does not like going out of his comfort zone, he’s a bit of a worrier, hides a lot and has really sharp claws…not a good combo for stuffing him in a cat carrier and driving him to see a vet he’s never met. Oh, and he’s quite dramatic, if this cat could write he’d be writing his story and it’d be coming off as a Greek Tragedy! I of course would be the villain…despite my feeding him, changing his litter box, buying him treats and toys and a bed, moving when he wants the chair, letting him have half my bed even though he weighs ten pounds and I weigh, er, let’s just say I weigh considerably more then ten pounds 😉 lol shrug, he’s adorable though, so oh well, I may bitch but I love him (which really means I am whipped and he knows it!) So yes, I had to check on him cause he was still recovering from the ordeal of the vet. He was extra clingy so I cancelled my evening plans and stayed home with him, I figure he’s my cat right? I took responsibility for him which means when he is not in top form and wants comfort I stay home and be there for him. He’s lucky he’s cute! lol

Not the most interesting day out there, I guess it’s a good thing I didn’t try to take pictures of the day cause what would you have seen? Mall Christmas decorations, my lunch, the cat, um…that’s about it, oh well, dinner, wait, did I have dinner last night? hmm…I had the stir fry, oh! I had a totally delish small milkshake, so because of the milkshake I didn’t do dinner…so yeah, not a lot of great pictures would have come from yesterday. I’ll attempt to make next Wednesday mildly more interesting so I have some decent images to upload.

For today I have to tell you about a yum dinner I made, a salmon steak with maple smoked apple something or other sauce with roasted sliced yam and roasted red and yellow peppers on the side. It was tasty and, the best part! *drumroll* I cooked it myself! Yeah, that’s right, you read that right, I cooked it! In my kitchen, with my stove, served on my dishes! Perhaps this is the start of getting back to normal eating? I’d like to think so. 🙂 Tomorrow I can eat dinner at work but I’m going to attempt to remember to cook an egg for breakfast, here’s hoping I remember and don’t automatically go for a Clif Bar lol. 😛

Oh, a little sidenote, I was watching the movie Oceans 12 today (watched Oceans 11 last night) and seeing Brad Pitt eating something totally delish looking in every freakin scene has totally made me hungry! So not fair! Grr Brad Pitt, Grr! (I don’t really mean the “Grr” I still luv ya! lol)

What’s Stopping Me?

15 Apr

Aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh! I sooooo wanna eat! Argh! It’s not that I am hungry, I am comfortably full, and it’s not like I didn’t get my little sweet at the end of the day, I used 2 flex points and had a snack I probably shouldn’t of had – it’s just that for some reason I want to eat, like, right now! Anything I can find! I want fooooooooood!

I swear, if tomorrow wasn’t weigh in day I’d raid the kitchen and make half hearted promises to myself that I’d make it up the rest of the week. This is so not good! Hell, I’m tempted to go to bed just so I can try to sleep through this cause honestly, I don’t know how well I am going to be able to resist this urge to eat. 😦 My willpower is only so strong…and this week, that sure as hell isn’t strong!

I got no exercise this week cause some of the evenings I had stuff to do after work so I got home too late to be able to use the hiking path, also, it’s been raining a lot so the trail is probably all mud right now, ugh. That’s the main problem I find with having my main form of exercise be an outdoors thing – if the weather sucks I can’t hike. 😦

The lack of exercise and having used a lot of flex points at the beginning of the week is making me way concerned for weigh in tomorrow. 😦 I really really really don’t want to gain (duh! who would?) And I swear my tummy is sticking out more then normal – what’s worse is my work pants seemed snugger yesterday – I am not sure if they really were or if I am imagining things and there is always the possibility if they are snugger it’s due to me accidentally shrinking them (hey, it’s possible!) and not cause I gained weight…sigh…I dunno, I think they were snugger, and my tummy looks like it’s sticking out more, and I ate badly this past week, what with Indian food and Old Spaghetti Factory and random flex points during the week – who knows what kind of damage I have done. And then today, with all I want to do is eat eat eat…

I wonder if it has anything to do with my new probiotics…I bought a new kind and maybe they are messing with my digestion and thereby making my tummy stick out? *curious face* I dunno…I am grasping at straws at this point, and I suppose this could all be in my head and things will be fine at weigh in tomorrow but we all know by now that the night before weigh in I stress and freak out a bit wondering if I screwed up so bad I gained instead of lost – it’s practically tradition! lol

Today I ate:

2 weetabix = 2 points

1/2 cup 1% milk = 1 point

Stir Fry

    – 1 cup rice = 4 points

    – mixed veggies = 0 points

    – teriyaki sauce = 0 points

    – uber small amount of tofu, chicken, shrimp = 2 points

Market Vegetable Blend soup = 4 points

12 mini bretons = 1 point

30 grams light cheese = 2 points

6 pickles = 1 point

1 dinner bun = 1 point

1 tsp margarine = 1 point

1 babybell = 1 point

1 pckg Quaker Crunch’ers = 2 points

Total points eaten = 22

sigh. I was only supposed to eat 20 points worth and would have hit that perfect if I didn’t have that final snack of the Quaker Crunch’ers but it was either eat that and use 2 points on something I knew (in my head, not my tummy) would be filling enough I wouldn’t need anything else or eat a 1 point tiny little chocolate and end up caving later cause I wanted something more – I opted for the 2 points cause it seemed the smarter decision for the long run.

The stir fry I had for lunch was from one of those places where you pick your veggies and meat/tofu from a buffet style layout and they stir fry it (using water) right in front of you then put it on top of rice. Yum! 🙂 Thing is, it’s based on weight so I always try to pick the lighter veggies, lol, doesn’t always work tho, shrug. I took a tiny piece of chicken, 2 small cubes of tofu and 2 little shrimps for a bit of protein – I don’t have any way to calculate the points for them except I know each was in such a small amount to not even equal 1 point each so I figure combined those three items equal 2 points at most. The food was tasty – I love places like that, where you can’t really screw up, whatever you eat is gonna be healthy – makes it easier. lol.

I am gonna go cross my fingers and toes that tomorrows weigh in goes well, I’ll let ya know! 🙂

A Healthy Treat

25 Mar

It’s Friday (duh!), it was a decently ok day and I had a great week points wise so I figured I could have a treat for dinner. My plan was Sushi from a place near my house I haven’t tried yet – it’s healthy-ish (depending what you order), it’s cheap, it’s yummy and I wouldn’t feel guilty about eating it…unlike the dessert breadsticks from Panago that I am craving lol. 😛

Well, I think the fates were conspiring against me, lol, this place doesn’t have a parking lot but there are parking spaces on the street in front of it however, all the spots were full. Fine, no biggy, I looped around the block to get to a different place near the restaurant that has free parking and always has a vacancy…it was full…say wha? That place is never full!

By this point I decided that I wasn’t really craving sushi, it was just what I chose based on process of elimination and since it was becoming more difficult then what I was prepared for to even get to the restaurant let alone get in and order, well, maybe I didn’t want sushi after all. lol

So homeward bound I went and actually got excited about making the chicken stir fry that I had made at the beginning of the week. I know, weird right? Getting excited about something healthy for dinner? And something that I am putting the effort in to making? But it’s such a tasty dish and there is so much food for so few points – how can I not love it? shrug.

I made the stir fry, with some minor changes to it, and my treat was making Yorkshire Puddings to go with the stir fry. 😀 For those of you who don’t know what yorkshire pudding is (1) do you live under a rock?? and (2) they are sooooo yum! 😀

Mmm! Mmm! Mmm! Yorkshire Puddings!

It’s not actually a pudding – it’s a light, fluffy, air filled bread doughy thing that has a subtle taste and if made on a large enough scale can be filled with stew etc. – when filled with stew it becomes a classic pub meal in England. 🙂 Here, I make them small (muffin size) and devour them like a person who has just finished a 2 week fast! teehee. They are 1 point per yorkie and trust me when I say one person can easily eat 6 in one sitting…I say this cause, uh, yeah, I kinda did that this evening – and that’s after I ate my huge serving of chicken stir fry! *rolls eyes* I think it’s cause they are so light and airy…it’s like you’re eating practically nothing…well, a tasty nothing, but you know what I mean. 🙂

So today I ate:

1 mango = 1 point

1 pear = 1 point

1 banana = 1 point

1 SmartOnes Cranberry Turkey Medallions = 4 points

1 piece of toast = 1 point

1 orange = 1 point

1 Minute Rice brown rice cup = 4 points

4 cashews, split = 1 point

chicken = 1 point

mixed veggies = 0 points

    – bean sprouts, baby corn, carrots, celery, peas, green beans, corn nibblets, mushroom, water chestnuts

6 yorkshire puddings = 6 points

Points Eaten = 21

Ok, yeah, I am one point over my daily points but I am ok with that cause I still have those exercise points I earned and never ate and I have all those wonderful flex points just waiting to be eaten. lol. I know I started this week saying I wasn’t going to use any flex points and I worked really hard to make sure I didn’t touch them but it’s friday night and I want a tiny bit of chocolate so I am gonna find something to nibble on. It’ll put me up another 2 points but like I said, I still have all those flex points left so I think it’s ok to eat something little…maybe a Jaffa Bar, Mmm! 🙂

My Apple Pear is MIA!

21 Mar

I like staying inside until the sun has set – sadly, monday through friday that is not possible, sigh, but on the weekends, well, that’s my time!

Yesterday (sunday) I went for a hike around 1pm or so and felt like I was being blinded the entire time…I forgot my sunglasses in my suv, oops! lol. So, until the sun went down I spent the rest of my day inside, protected from the elements. 😛 This means I went grocery shopping around 8:30pm-ish, which really, is an excellent time because not many people grocery shop that late on a sunday. 🙂

The point of all this! I decided to try a new fruit, not new to the world or anything, but new to me – I picked up an Apple Pear. It’s white like a, well, like a pear (go figure lol) but apple shaped. I have absolutely no idea what this thing is gonna taste like but hey, can’t kill me to try something new right? I put it in my cart, put it on the moving part of the till…and that was the last time I saw it! It just…disappeared!

I didn’t realize it was MIA until hours and hours later when I was chilling at home and all of a sudden I realized I hadn’t unpacked it; it’s weird what our brains remember and when. shrug. I went rooting through the fridge, dug out the reusable grocery bags I use – I looked everywhere I could think of in the hopes I accidentally put it somewhere weird. lol. Then I went out and checked the trunk, under the suv, on the grass and path from my suv to my door…I must of looked so weird. Ah well. So then I dug out the receipt and checked to see if I paid for the missing fruit.

I did not. Weird.

I am thinking the cashier thought the apple pear belonged to the guy behind me and that’s why it didn’t get put through with my stuff, sigh. Annoying! I was actually pretty pissed cause I was looking forward to having the apple pear as part of my breakfast today but sadly it was not to be. Ah well, I stopped at the grocery store after work today and bought the last two the store had so I will get one for brekkie tomorrow along with some grapes! 🙂

My food choices today were (I think) fairly great. 🙂 I ate lots of fruit and vegg and even had some protein in there, woohoo. 🙂

Here is what I ate:

1 apple = 1 point

1 cup grapes = 1 point

1 banana = 1 point

1 can Fiesta Veg and Black Bean Soup = 4 points

1 piece toast = 1 point

1 orange = 1 point

1 Minute Rice Brown Rice Cup = 4 points

stir fried mixed veggies = 0 points

     – 1 carrot, 1 celery stalk, 1 mushroom, handful of water chestnuts, handful of bean sprouts, garlic

15 grams light shredded cheese = 1 point

1/2 serving chicken = 1 point

4 cashews (split) = 1 point

1 piece toast = 1 point

1/2 tbls Nutella = 1 point

1 pckg Quaker Granola Crunch’ers = 2 points

Total Points Eaten = 20 😀

Perfect! 😀

Let’s count shall we? That is 7-8 servings of fruit/veggie, 2 servings of protein (the beans in the soup and the chicken with dinner), 3 servings of grain (the toast and the rice) and 1-2 servings of dairy (the cheese and the nutella) wOOt! wOOt! 😀

The points for the chicken are a tad weird, lemme explain. 🙂 I used Maple Leaf already cooked and sliced chicken breast; half the package is 2 points and I used a tiny bit over a quarter of the package – I did measure how much I used but didn’t write it down and can’t remember the exact weight. Oops! But that’s why my chicken was only 1 point.

I made a stir fry for dinner, a first for me. I was worried I’d screw it up but it turned out suprisingly yummy. A bonus to the whole stir fry dinner thing is I got a whack load of veggies, a way filling meal and it was low in points. 🙂

So far this week is already going better then last week – work wise and food wise. 🙂 Let’s hope I can continue to eat properly for the rest of the week…oh, and I guess I am also hoping the weather clears up so I can go hiking after work (it rained all day today)…I can’t believe I am hoping for good hiking weather…*rolls eyes*…will wonders never cease? lol 😛
