Good Times On Mt Seymour

28 Feb

Snowshoeing, I hate typing that word, it feels awkward, but it is a fun activity so alas, I will be doomed to keep typing it. Oh what a hard life I lead *pauses for a dramatic swoon*

swoon

Some friends and I went up to Mt. Seymour to go snowshoeing and had a blast! Hmm…I’ve really gotta learn some new slang…

The day started with dragon boat practice (for two of us), then brunch, then snowshoeing. So ya know, just a slightly active day. πŸ˜‰

I wasn’t sure my suv would be allowed up the mountain, if the roads are bad they make you park at the bottom and take a shuttle up but nobody checked us so up we went…slowly…as in old granny slow…the higher we got the more the snow was swirling around and the more wintry it became. It always amazes me how you can go from city to mountain so quickly here.

Because we were snowshoeing and not skiing or snowboarding we had to park farther away, snowshoe discrimination! πŸ˜‰ It is actually ok because it gave us time to get used to walking on the snowshoes.

Once we were strapped in and on our way it was basically just fun. The whole time. I mean c’mon, get four friends together, strap their feet to snowshoes, set them on a trail, and how could that not be fun?

I did learn that all my survival knowledge is basically theoretical and does not kick in as an automatic response when faced with a potentially dangerous situation…great thing to learn up on a mountain in winter lol

See, we were trekking along this one narrow stretch where you have to go single file and all of a sudden snow is falling on us. And not the snow that had been falling all day, no no, I mean big poofy coming from the side of the mountain snow. There is technically a potential of avalanche and part of my brain kept thinking “keep moving. you have to keep moving. woman move your feet!” but in actuality all the four of us did was turn around, look up at the mountain to see where the snow was coming from, start laughing and wondering what was happening. So yeah, the survival skills of my friends and I are maybe not the absolute highest they could be…but I’m sure somewhere out there someone is worse than us…right?

All in all it was a great day, as you can see in the above pictures. I wish there could be more like that. πŸ™‚

Day 5 of 20

24 Dec

Day 5 of the 12 Days of Fitness!

Lemme tell ya, this was a good one! πŸ˜€

I had a bunch of stuff to do around my parent’s place and earmarked today to be the day of getting shit done. Before that all started though I decided to go for a walk, in -12C (that is before windchill, I’m not actually sure what the temp with windchill was but the wind was going at 11km/hr and I sure felt it!), while it was snowing…I never claimed to make smart decisions lol

So out I went and I have to admit, I kinda liked it. It was cold, at about the ten minute mark I seriously considered turning back because the wind was cutting through my pants in a brutal way and my legs were burning from the cold but I know from past winters that if I just keep going eventually the pain goes away. It isn’t that I acclimatize, it is that my legs stop feeling temperature, or anything for that matter lol πŸ˜‰

I fast walked for about 20 minutes then had to turn around due to a road and weather. On the way back I decided to jog a bit so on the parts of sidewalk that were cleared I jogged. When crossing roads I walked because they were super slippy and I really don’t need to fall and get injured right now. Some parts of the sidewalks were un-runnable thanks to snow and ice but I think I got a pretty decent jog in there. I passed two people who were shovelling snow while walking in the one direction and when I was passing them on the way back at a jog they both looked at me like I was a martian lol Admittedly, I wasn’t dressed like a runner so maybe it was my outfit that was confusing them, and not that I was running in that type of weather?

img_6066

I got wicked windburn on my cheeks from this walk!

Once back at my parent’s place I shovelled snow from their back porch, the front path, and the driveway. By that point I was cold but wasn’t going to start feeling any colder so I figured might as well get it all done at once.

About an hour later you’d never know I shovelled since it had kept snowing and everything was white again *rolls eyes*

I did other things around the house that kept me busy but those two activities are what I am counting towards my fitness for the day for the challenge.

I’d say I can quite confidently check mark this day as a success! πŸ˜€

Junior Snowmaggedon

9 Dec

Snowmaggedon didn’t quite happen. Did we get snow? Sure. Was it at levels that made functioning outside of a person’s home almost impossible? Nope! The more important question, was it pretty? So freakin gorgeous! I once again took a stupid amount of pictures of snow. SNOW! *rolls eyes*

When I left for work it was big fat flakes falling, I was grinning like a fool the entire time I was getting snow off the suv aaaaand while I was driving to work. Snow like that gives tires great traction so the driving was a breeze…well, for me. Some people appeared to be having trouble but it seemed like most people remembered the horror that was last Monday and were taking extra care with their speed and such.

It continued to snow for pretty much all of my work shift, at some point it turned in to more of a slushy snow instead of the pretty stuff which is unfortunate but oh well, had to happen at some point I suppose. shrug.

By the time work was over it was raining and everything was melting, sadness. If temps get to freezing over night tomorrow will be interesting, what with every surface being like an ice rink but that’s a problem for another day.

When I got home from work it was about 9:45p and I reeeeally wanted to go for a walk but most of the sidewalks were not cleared and I had no desire to be picking my way across uneven terrain so instead I grabbed a shovel and started shoveling.

Get this…I really enjoyed myself!

Shoveling the snow turned in to a multi-tasking dream lol

(1) I am counting it as my exercise for the day – hey don’t judge, I’m lazy and have to count whatever I can!

(2) I not only did the path and sidewalk for the place I live in but also for the neighbour and then for the house beyond the neighbours so that’s my good deed for the day

(3) I made tomorrow’s shoveling easier by clearing what had already built up today

I maaaay not have done my poor back / shoulders / neck much good since they are still hurting from this past Monday’s car accident but I’d like to think it is better to be at least partially active so the muscles don’t all seize up and become unhappy with all movement then to be lazy and doing nothing. Besides, shoveling snow can be quite soothing, especially when no one else is out; it is so quiet, so pretty, so zen like.

All of that is only here fyi, in any other part of the country I’d be shoveling snow in bitterly freezing temperatures and I’d be complaining louder than anybody else out there. Here though, it was pleasant out, didn’t even need to bundle up. πŸ™‚

Don’t mind all the pictures of trees, I just really like trees covered in snow. πŸ™‚

German Christmas Market

5 Dec

For the fourth year in a row I went to the German Christmas Market that is held in the downtown core. It runs for a month or so and can be a lot of fun. It is based on the large Christmas Markets that happen in Europe and is German themed. I’ve never been to one of the Christmas Markets in Europe so I couldn’t say for certain how this one compares, I’m pretty sure this one is way smaller but the gist of it is the same…I think?

There is a carousal for all ages that my friend and I meant to go on but forgot, we kind of purposefully forgot as it was pouring rain and we didn’t like the idea of sitting on a wet horse lol There is also a massive Christmas tree that every single person there tries to get a picture in front of, for real, every single person lol, we had to wait for people to clear out so we could get a picture without strangers in it lol

One of the main things about the market is the food, I’d say half or maybe a bit more than half of the booths are food. Most of them are German foods but there is one booth that is all maple flavoured foods, we are in Canada after all! lol πŸ˜‰

For dinner we each got a, hmm, a glorified hot dog I guess, mine was all beef, I think KL got the one that had beef and pork in it but I could be wrong about that. They are topped with sauerkraut and fried onions and if you want there is also ketchup and mustard.

2014-12-04 19.34.03

With your entrance ticket you get a free mug of either apple cider or mulled wine. I know from previous years I don’t like the mulled wine so apple cider it was! Lucky for me I like apple cider lol You get to keep the mug, which means I now have 4 of these mugs lol they are small so normally not a useful size, after all, if you are having a hot drink you want a normal sized mug right? I find them the perfect size if I am having juice though. πŸ™‚

We also got dessert, I got a hot apple strudel and KL got waffle on a stick, which now that I think of it is probably not a German thing since it is at every fair type thing I’ve been to for years now and one of the few booths not manned by an actual German person lol

Hot apple strudel with vanilla sauce on top

Hot apple strudel with vanilla sauce on top

Of the two desserts KL’s was the better option, her waffles on a stick were covered in a strawberry sauce and whipped Β cream and I thought it was way better than my strudel…kind of because the strudel was a bit bland and had raisins in it, ugh, raisins, blech.

There was also live entertainment, it ranged from good, to meh, to funny.

When we got there a group was performing whose name I didn’t catch, they performed a variety of songs, all Christmas themed. The lead singer had the cutest little hat on which you can’t see all that well in the picture because she kept standing directly under a light which made my camera unhappy lol

Can you see her hat? It's adorable!

Can you see her hat? It’s adorable!

There was also entertainment provided by some extremely well dressed drag queens who are way better at walking in heels than I ever will be, not even joking about that! There was a Simone Says game, and at least three separate musical performances, lemme see, there was a Celine Dion, a Taylor Swift and hmm, I’m not sure who the other person was supposed to be but she was entertaining! Basically it was a bunch of people having a great time. πŸ™‚ The Taylor Swift impersonator was wearing such a skimpy outfit I felt bad for her lol even with all her dancing she must have been freezing!

The weather was cold, not super cold but cold, shrug, it is December after all. It was raining the entire time so thank goodness for waterproof jackets and boots! lol I bent my head forward at one point to look down and had a whole bunch of water pour off the top of my head where apparently my hood had been collecting it *rolls eyes* The rain is totally manageable if you are dressed for it, which luckily both KL and I were. I’ve gone other years where I wasn’t dressed for the weather and while I had fun I was also freezing which drastically lowered my enjoyment level, this year I was prepared! πŸ™‚

This market has quickly become part of my Christmas season tradition, I really look forward to it and hope to continue going in the years to come. πŸ™‚

A Lovely Mountain Day

6 Feb

I spent a chunk of my afternoon up on a mountain today and thoroughly enjoyed myself. πŸ™‚ This may not seem odd but anyone who knows me knows I don’t like being outside during the winter, it’s cold, and there is snow and ice, and it’s cold! Yes, I know, I am a failureΒ as a Canadian *rolls eyes* πŸ˜›

I decided to go snowshoeing today, yay! It was zero degrees Celsius, which is, um…gimme a sec, I gotta google…it’s 32F…so nice n warm and perfect for spending outside. πŸ˜€

We haven’t had a lot of snow this winter (yes, I’m in that part of Canada lol) so I’ve been waiting and waiting and waiting for the trails to get snowy enough to make it worth my while and decided today was a good day to try em out.

There was snow, and a decent amount of it, but none of it fresh and none of it even remotely powdery, which, if you snowshoe you know is the most fun type of snow to trek through. Todays snow was all packed down, partially icy because the snow keeps melting during the day then freezing overnight – vicious loop that.

For part of the trail my snowshoes looked liked this…

2014-02-06 14.59.31yup, that’s right, they were being carried not worn cause the snow was just that packed down that there was no point putting them on my feet, sigh. I felt like an idiot carrying them and was really wishing I’d left them in my suv but obviously I wasn’t going to go all the way back to my suv to put them in the trunk so in my hands they stayed.

Until…

I finally got to put them on! Yay! πŸ˜€

And hey, don’t judge the pants! They are super warm, fit well and my friend sold them to me for a measly $60, I heart those pants!…even if in this pic they do make my legs look huuuuuge lol

omg, me without makeup, on the internet, ack!

omg, me without makeup, on the internet, ack!

Do you see the damage to my toque? The loose threads that make it look old and worn? Well, lemme tell ya the story of that damage. This toque is brand new, this is only the third time I have gotten to wear it and I take good care of my stuff. So how did it get to look like this? The cat. *glares at the fur ball* I came home from work and discovered my toque at the base of his scratching post, it normally hangs on a hook on the wall by my front door. So he got it off the hook, brought it through the kitchen, in to the living room, killed it, then dumped the carcass somewhere I was sure to find it. The sadist. I’m trying to figure out how to fix or hide the damage but don’t know how…so right now, if you are keeping score, it is Cat-1, Human-0.

I didn’t get to go all the way to the top of the mountain due to timing issues. I got up there a bit later then planned which would’ve been alright except I was going on a trail I haven’t gone on before and accidentally went on the wrong trail to start with, oops! In my defence, there are two trail entrances, fairly close to each other, the first trail entrance turned out to be the wrong trail but the other trail entrance is hidden from site when at the first trail entrance so I thought there was only one trail…does that make sense? lol

Anyways! I went on the first, incorrect trail, and fairly quickly thought I was gonna die. It was super icy, lots of rocks, not a lot of snow, steep decline the entire way and of course the rocks were covered in ice so every part that had some serious decline trekking to do left me feeling I was facing certain doom. I don’t do awesome on ice, thanks to my stupid knee, and I didn’t even have my hands free thanks to having to carry my snowshoes. The trail was seeming like one super bad idea. I didn’t get all that far in to it when I decided screw it and I turned back. I felt like a bit of a failure but figured better safe than sorry. Since I thought that was the path I was supposed to be using I was deciding how I was going to get my exercise for the day since snowshoeing obviously wasn’t going to work out but when I got back to the start of the trail I noticed some people seemingly pop out of nowhere on my left side who had snowshoes. Being the nosy person I am I went to investigate and found the real trail, yay! and phew! lol

The second, and correct trail was way better because (1) it had snow (2) it was meant for snowshoeing (3) it was uphill and (4) way less icy patches.

Oh, and can I say people who take part in outdoor winter sports, super friendly! Every person I passed on the trail (by passed I mean they were going the opposite direction as I not I was faster than them and scooting around them) said hi, or asked how I was doing, a couple people stopped and we chatted a bit. Messed up my timing (I was tracking my distance and speed) and also shortened the length of time I was active but I don’t mind. People look out for each other, and that’s nice. This one lady checked to see if I was going up the mountain alone, I said yes so she gave me a recap of what I was in for (she was on her way down), reassured me about how many other people she had seen, where there were some rough patches, stuff like that. Nice lady. πŸ™‚ I notice the same thing when I am hiking in the summer, people say hi as you pass on the trail, sometimes stop and chat, things like that. Maybe it’s all that sunshine people are getting, makes them friendlier lol

German Christmas Market Part 1

11 Dec

Any outing that involves hot apple cider is a good outing. Crap! I just remembered I didn’t put that in my food tracker, gimme a sec…

Ok, added, all is well lol πŸ˜›

So back to the German Christmas Market…

Don’t go thinking I flew to Germany lol it is an annual thing that is held in the downtown core. This is my third year going and I love it. It is a simple little market but something about it makes me smile. There is a carousel (which I may have kinda forgot to take a picture of, oops!), booths filled with various foods and drinks and even more booths filled with all kinds of things to buy. Almost all the items for sale (food and non food) are imported from Germany or made here but German inspired. Well…except for the booth with the maple foods, which omg yum! I love love love maple flavoured anything! πŸ˜€ They have maple toffee that is delish! I bought it last year and fully anticipated buying it again this year but alas, it does not fit in to my eating plan (plus I have no idea how to get nutritional information for it, yeah I know I can google but not like I can weigh out the toffee so I know how much I ate, sigh).

I can’t show you, or tell you, what I bought at the market cause most of the items are Christmas presents and the people receiving them may read this blog so hush! lol One thing I bought for myself was tea, yeah I know, I’m so exciting right? But remember how I am trying to expand my tea collection?

I bought Silent Night Tea which is a “winterly selection of our finest tea blends”, there are four flavours in the box, Winter Delight which is a green tea, Stars which is a black tea, Sun Of The Spirit which is a white tea and Bright Light which is a lemon balm – whatever that means! lol The only tea that doesn’t contain caffeine is the Bright Light (the lemon balm flavour) so I am still failing at expanding my non-caffeinated tea collection – I didn’t even think to read the box or ask the guy working the booth if the tea contained caffeine, arg, I suck at shopping for non-caffeinated tea! lol Later, at a tea store I found loose leaf maple tea which seems like the best idea ever! But I didn’t buy it cause it is loose leaf and I don’t have one of those metal ball thingies to put loose leaf tea in, all my tea is in tea bags lol

My Silent Night Tea

My Silent Night Tea

I wore a ridiculous amount of layers to go to the market, I get cold super duper easy and was mildly terrified of being so cold I wouldn’t be having fun soooooo I wore a tank top, then a long sleeved shirt, then a plaid button up shirt, then a hoodie, then a jacket…count that, minus the coat that is 4 layers! FOUR! All that effort to stay warm, which fyi I so did, but my feet froze, sigh. I have the worst luck when it comes to keeping my feet warm, probably because I don’t own warm shoes lol I own boots, leather and man made but none of them are designed for warmth, they are designed for looks so they are useless at keeping my feet warm. I decided to wear a pair of Keds (sneakers) thinking maybe the canvas fabric would be better at retaining heat in the foot area and also because those particular shoes fit loosley enough I can wear thicker socks with them lol. I was horrifically wrong and my toes were in that pain/numb/frozen state for quite a while, you know, that stage where it hurts to walk because you can’t put pressure on your toes, that stage. Ugh. I’ve been mildly lusting after a pair of Uggs (or a fake pair cause really? that much money on boots? lame!) for those rare times when I need warm boots. I have an old pair that are kind of like fake Uggs but nicer lol thing is they are so old they are way unattractive and the only time I wear them is when I am going to work on my early morning days and want my feet to stay cozy while I am en route to work. Obviously once I get there I switch to cute but completely not designed for winter shoes lol. In case you haven’t figured it out I am not always practical *rolls eyes*

I am actually really tempted to go shopping tomorrow during the day and buy a pair of warm boots because I am going back to the market tomorrow night with a couple friends. The market. The outdoor market. At night. In winter. On a day we are predicted to get snow. With feet in shoes not designed for warmth. I am gonna cry like a little girl. sigh. I can almost justify them because I could wear them when I go home for Christmas, back to Alberta, the land of deep snow and cold weather. My feet may not survive lol

Oh! I finally got some software so I can black out my face in pics which means I can finally post a pic of myself when I am out doing something, yay for remembering to get the software! lol So here ya go, me with a nutcracker, finally a guy taller than me! πŸ˜‰

Part 2 of the German Market post will come tomorrow night after I have gone for the second time this year with my friends. I figure I’ll have better pics cause everything will be all lit up and pretty and my hands won’t be filled with bags because I did my shopping today lol. πŸ™‚ …although I am gonna get another apple cider, Mmm!

A Winter Wonderland

9 Dec

I live in the one part of Canada that gets almost no snow. When I first moved here I loved and hated that. I’m still pretty torn on it to be honest. I think if I had to shovel it I’d flat out hate it again but since I never live in places that require me to shovel, the snow never gets deep or lasts beyond 4 days and it is more a dusting than a snowfall I can safely say I generally look forward to the snow. πŸ™‚

Today I was at work when the snow started and I was so happy and cheerful about it you’d think I was a child on Christmas morning looking at a huge pile of presents lol. But hey, if you can’t find joy in the little things how will you ever find happiness? I was told if I kept referring to it as pretty I’d be the one who had to go outside and shovel it from the work driveway lol I promptly stopped cause, uh hello? Me? Shovel? Pfft! So not happening! I didn’t bring a jacket to work! πŸ˜›

It is supposed to keep snowing, although really it is flurries at best, until sometime tomorrow which means we might actually have snow that stays! πŸ˜€ Better yet, it might fully cover the grass! Ooooooh exciting! I’m not looking forward to the driving tomorrow, people here suck at driving once our little amount of snow arrives. It’s embarrassing on behalf of all Canadians from other provinces *rolls eyes* I have to be somewhere at 1pm which would normally take maybe 20 minutes to get to, I will be leaving an hour in advance just in case traffic is that slow. Sounds overly paranoid I know but last year I had to drive somewhere that normally took about 30 minutes and it ended up taking more than 2 hours. Told ya people here don’t know how to drive in snow! lol

I had other stuff I was gonna blog about today but the snow has taken over my thoughts lol It is the perfect evening to sit inside with a cup of hot chocolate a book and a view of the snow…if only I had windows that gave me a view of the snow! lol

I highly enjoyed making footprints in the snow!

Proof I walked through the snow lol

Still a lot of grass but I have hope the grass'll be covered by tomorrow!
