That Consumer

20 Jan

So apparently I am that consumer, you know, the one that calls stores and complains about something.

Ugh. I hate the idea that I am that person and yet…I did it, and I would do it again lol

The other day I went to Costco, you know Costco, the store that convinces you buying everything in bulk quantities is a great idea, even if it means you’ll be eating the same thing every day for a week just so you can finish it up before it goes bad.

I sound like I don’t like Costco when in fact I love Costco lol

Anyways!

I was at Costco and one of the things I bought was Diet Coke, which to me is a requirement for living a happy life. A case of Diet Coke at Costco has 32 cans of pop in it, yay!

diet-coke-2

So, I get home and start putting the cans of pop in the fridge. Because of the size of the packaging I take the cans out of the main package and put them loose in the fridge. Normally I put a couple cans in the fridge and as I drink one I put a new can in but this time I decided to put them all in, that way the room temp cans aren’t taking up valuable floor space.

Well, turns out I was missing a can. Sadness! No way was I attempting to get the cans back in the packaging and carting them back to the store but…I didn’t want to be shorted a can of pop.

Which is how I became that consumer. The one who called customer service, told them what happened, and just by being on the phone with them was obviously expecting a solution to the problem that would not inconvenience me lol

The lady I spoke to was entertaining, and didn’t make me feel like an idiot for calling about such a thing, which was nice. I told her I couldn’t get back there until Sunday so they have a can of Diet Coke waiting for me at customer service that I can pick up this Sunday after work.

I’m sure she was rolling her eyes at having to put one can of Diet Coke to the side for me but I kinda don’t care…I paid for that can of pop so I want it…obviously. lol

The whole thing is ridiculous, and I think in the past I would have just shrugged and figured oh well, but I am on a strict budget this year and every penny counts…can I still say that or should the expression change to “every nickel” since we don’t use pennies anymore?…hmm, something to ponder…but yeah, I’m being super strict with money this year and apparently that also covers something as silly as a single missing can of Diet Coke.

Best Foodie Website Ever!

4 Oct

Today was a Subway kind of day. Actually, I didn’t want food, all I wanted was the fountain diet coke but I figured that the pop alone didn’t qualify as lunch sooooo I got a sub also.

Because I forgot to take a picture of the sub before I ate it...

Because I forgot to take a picture of the sub before I ate it…all I have is a picture of the logo lol

I went with my standard option, a 6 inch turkey sub on 9-grain wheat bread, with white cheese, toasted, loaded with veggies and topped with mustard and light mayo. It may seem boring but I really like it – and not in a it’s-a-healthy-choice-so-I’ll-eat-it kind of like it but I legit like it. 🙂 I  love that you can have avocado, I thought it was supposed to be a limited time offer but it’s been around for ages and doesn’t seem to be getting phased out, maybe it’s so popular they realized they should keep it? shrug. I dunno, I’m just happy it’s a choice.

My sub is more veggie than meat lol I get spinach, avocado, tomato, cucumber, green pepper, red onion, black olives and banana peppers. Mmm! Don’t you love how many different colours veggies come in? My sub always look so purdy 😉 lol

I still remember by heart how many Weight Watcher’s points my sub is but now I’m counting calories and those I do not have memorized. I checked out the Subway website this evening to find the calories and discovered they updated it quite a bit since I last took a look and holy cow, amazing website!!

You pull up a chart that has all their items listed, just like every other nutritional information chart you find on restaurant’s websites but! this one is different! You click on the item you ate and it takes you to a new page where it explains the nutritional information you are seeing is if your sub was on white or wheat bread and had no condiments. But c’mon, who doesn’t put some sort of condiment on there, right? So then you click on a button that says “Calculate Yours” and boom! you get this amazing page that has all the options listed, you can say exactly which vegetables you had, which cheese, which condiments and as you pick and choose what you had on your sub the nutritional information that is showing on the side of the page updates itself.

Seriously, best. nutritional. website. EVER!

Turns out my sub with all it’s modifications is 440 calories – good to know! )

As I was googling for a picture of the Subway logo I came across a Subway scandal! *shocked face* Turns out people have been measuring their subs and they are shorter than they are supposed to be, the footlong is coming in at 11″ which makes me wish I’d measured mine before eating it lol Next time! 😛

Fully Baked

4 Dec

No, not me! eesh, like if I was I’d blog about that?? 😉

The potato I had for a late dinner tonight, it was baked, in my oven, in my new apartment – the first thing to get put in the oven since I moved here, yah me for cooking! Well, ok, it barely counts as cooking, just like boiling some pasta and throwing a jar of pasta sauce on top of it doesn’t count as cooking either but hey, it’s the little steps! lol

It’s weird, I used to cook everyday, but since moving in to this apartment I barely use the kitchen, and when I do it’s to make tea, Mmm tea 🙂

First it was because when I moved my stuff in I blocked off the stove and could only open the fridge wide enough to squeeze out a small bottle of diet coke. You’d think I’d move the stuff in the kitchen so I could access those two appliances fairly quickly, but nope, not me, didn’t see the point. For the first week or so of living here I survived off of Clif Bars and diet coke, so healthy huh? Then I got some food in, actually wait, did I? Huh, no, I actually didn’t. I ate at work or grabbed take out or ate with friends and brought back left overs, but didn’t stock up the kitchen. I take some sort of weird pride out of my almost empty fridge, like the less items I have on the shelves the better. I don’t know where that mind set came from and really, I don’t care enough to track down its origin within my brain, it is just there, shrug.

But the other day I went grocery shopping, I was actually going specifically for milk for my tea (Mmm tea! lol) and while I was there I meandered on over to the produce section. I wasn’t really in a shopping frame of mine, well, food shopping, if it had been shoes or clothes or that ring I saw on ebay I really want then I’m sure I’d of dived right in to the shopping experience, but food? Nah. On a whim I decided to get a potato, I’d gotten the image of a baked potato in my head earlier that day and I guess it stuck enough that I was still semi-thinking about it when I was in the shop. Well, if I am going to bake a potato I need toppings for it right? Right! I already had cheese but I required maple flavoured baked beans to make this meal perfect. Don’t make that face! I can practically hear you making a cringy face and going “maple flavoured baked beans on a baked potato???? gross!” to that I say “don’t knock it till you’ve tried it!” 😛

I love anything maple, yummmm! and maple baked beans are a particular favourite, they are made by Heinz, go Heinz! lol They have other flavoured baked beans if maple isn’t your thing, but, well, how could maple not be your thing? *confused face* It had been so long since I baked a potato (I wasn’t allowed them on my most recent meal plan and they have remained on my personal list of “don’t touch that food!”) that I actually had to google how to bake a potato, lame. Luckily, I found a great site, not like baking a potato is hard *rolls eyes* but they had some ideas I hadn’t heard of before and I quite like how the potato turned out. Basically, oven at 425F, scrub clean the potato, stab potato, rub potato with olive oil, sprinkle some salt and pepper on it, place on tin foil that is on a baking tray, stick in oven. It takes 50-60 minutes in the oven, remember to turn the potato every 20 minutes and occasionally stab it to check on its progress. Easy peasy!

My addition of course is to heat up the baked beans so when the potato is done I can cut it open, put some cheese on it, drown it in baked beans and then settle down to a nice cozy yummy dinner. 🙂

The result had a nice crunchy skin and fluffy inside. 🙂 I think I will skip the salt and pepper next time though, I never use salt in anything, seriously, never. I am not that person who feels salt needs to be added to every freakin dish to provide some flavour. I generally like how foods taste when they taste like themselves, not when they taste like salty versions of themselves…this seems to be something not many people agree with me about, ah well, it’s good to be different lol.  I found the salt and pepper taste to be quite strong and I didn’t use all that much, I guess it is because I so rarely use pepper and never use salt that my taste buds notice them quite easily. For the most part though I could drown out the salt and pepper flavour by making sure some cheese and baked beans were on the spoon with the potato.

I suppose I should get back in to the swing of things cooking wise. Don’t really have the excuse of not being able to access my fridge or stove anymore but, sigh, I got so used to not cooking that the idea of doing it again, on a daily basis, *groan* is enough to make me take a deep sigh and contemplate living off of Clif Bars again. 😛 Well, Clif Bars and maybe a multi-vitamin or something…

😉

Stupid Move

30 Aug

I picked up a shift today so I was up, dressed, purdy’d up, fed and out of the house by 9:45am which, compared to how I normally spend my days, is early. lol.  😀

When I was done work I had to stop and get gas for the suv and the gas station had a Tim Horton’s in it, oh danger zone! Now, the provincial law here is that you have to pre-pay for gas so I always pay at the pump, this means I don’t have to go in to the store and see all the junk food that might tempt me but they were having a sale on smallish sized bottles of pop, 99cents for a 414ml bottle and I really wanted a half n half (I’ll explain what that is in a sec…) and I figured I could afford to spend $2. When I was in the store I remembered I need milk and decided since they were also having a sale on that I’d pick it up there instead of making a special trip to the grocery store for it – it’s all about saving gas in my world lol.

Well, I magically ended up at the Tim Horton’s counter, weird how that happens huh? 😉 They had my absolute fave donut in stock and I was unable to resist, I mean, come on, with tax a donut is a whopping $1.01 and it tastes sooooooo good! The only down side is that I thought I’d be able to get the nutritional info from the website, normally Timmy’s is really good for that, but of course that’s like the one frickin donut they don’t have info for. lol. I got the Toasted Chocolate Coconut donut, and I’m gonna admit, I enjoyed Every.Single.Bite. 😀 Since I couldn’t find the donut’s nutritional info I took the info from a chocolate glazed donut…I know it’s not right, but the donut was chocolate, although not glazed, but I figure the points for the glaze will stand in for whatever the points for the coconut is…does that make sense? It does in my head…

Well, now I am regretting that donut. *groan* Not cause of the points, the calories, the fat the general lack of nutritional value that it didn’t add to my body lol, I am regretting it cause I am uber hungry but don’t have points to eat. Aaaaaahhhhhh! Hungry! erg.

I earned 3 exercise points today and have eaten 22 points today which means I have eaten 2 of my 3 exercise points and I don’t like eating all the exercise points that I earn in a day…I prefer to not eat the exercise points cause then it means I am losing weight faster…in theory…but every now and then, it means I am feeling starved cause at some point in the day I made a stupid move food wise and instead of filling up on a proper meal I fill up on oh, say, a donut *rolls eyes* and that leaves my tummy saying “hey, moron! I still need food down here! what the heck are ya doin? you think that donut was a meal, cause it wasn’t, and I’m gonna make you pay for that aaaallllll night, sucker!” I swear, that’s exactly what my stomach says to me!

This used to happen to me when I first started Weight Watchers, I’d go to Starbucks and get my Iced Chai Latte and then suffer later that night cause the latte was like 6 points so drinking it meant I missed a meal and by the time I went to bed I felt like I hadn’t eaten in years, lol, yes, I know, dramatic, but when you’re used to eating whenever and whatever all of a sudden restricting yourself tends to freak out your tummy. lol. Well, today is like a flashback of that, my stomach is all about wanting food and my brain is all “No!” I’d say I wonder which will win but I know it will be my brain because I can’t eat this late at night when I don’t have my medication, as it is I ate dinner later then I should have but that couldn’t be helped so tomorrow might be a bit harsh…ugh…but, on the plus side I’m hitting up the docs tomorrow so I may get the right prescription, or at least ‘a’ prescription and I may soon be medicated, yah!

Today I ate:

1 Cup cooked oatmeal = 2 points

1 Activia yogurt = 2 points

2 Weetabix = 2 points

1/2 Cup skim milk = 1 point

1 Kashi pumpkin spice bar = 2 points

1 Coconut Donut = 6 points

1/2 Coke, 1/2 Diet Coke = 1 point

1 Cup brown rice = 4 points

1 turkey hot dog = 2 points

mixed veggies = 0 points

1/2 tbls soya sauce = 0 points

Total Points Eaten = 22

Exercise Points Earned = 3

Oh, so the half n half I mentioned above, it’s equal portions of Coke (or Pepsi) and Diet Coke (or Diet Pepsi). KL got me drinking this and I could shoot her for it cause I never drink my points but the combo of the two pops (the regular and the diet) is so tasty. Way back in the day (like I don’t even remember how many years ago) I used to drink Coke, and man, I drank it like it was gonna run out the next day and I had to get as much of it as possible into me as quickly as possible lol. Eventually I forced myself to start drinking diet Coke (I used to hate hate hate it but I retrained my taste buds, not an easy thing to do! lol) and I drank just as much if not more diet Coke as when I drank the regular Coke, after all, there were no points for a diet Coke so it made it the perfect drink, taste but no points. 🙂 lol.

For some reason diet Coke stopped tasting good, I don’t know why, it just started tasting icky and everytime I drank it I got sick feeling to my stomach so, sadly, I had to stop drinking it. I had hoped that if I took a couple months off from drinking it I’d be able to go back to it but nope, it still tastes icky.  😦 I didn’t want to go back to drinking regular Coke, and even if I decided the points were worth it it’s too sweet for me now, damn my changed tastebuds!

So, for all the above mentioned reasons, shrug, I stopped drinking pop. Some months ago I experimented with Diet Ginger Ale and found I could drink that, it tasted good, had no points, and didn’t make my tummy feel sick so when I wanted pop at least I could have it again but really, I just kinda stopped drinking it…Now, thanks to KL introducing me to this half n half combo I have found that I can drink cola again, it tastes good, it doesn’t hurt my tummy, make me feel sick or taste gross, and well…it’s not as many points as a regular pop, although it is more points then a diet or say, glass of water *rolls eyes* lol

I don’t drink this combo often, but for a couple days now I have been craving it so I bought the two small bottles, one of each, and have enough pop to have the drink twice. Really, I could have just had it as one drink but I thought I’d spread it out a bit…This may work out ok or this may become something I crave a lot and either cave and get or don’t get and well…think about having all the time…guess we’ll see how it goes 🙂

Real Quick Update…

28 Jun

Ok, this is gonna be quick update since I wrote so much last time. 🙂

My food today was:

3/4 cup Red Berry Special K = 2 points

1/2 cup 1% milk = 1 point

c cup grapes = 1 point

tea = 0 points

1/2 veggie burger = 8 points

mixed veggies = o points

1 cup Campbell’s Butternut Squash soup = 2 points

2 pcs Safeway sandwich bread = 3 points

2 tsp margarine = 2 points

1 pckg strawberry Pocky = 5 points

Total points used = 24…right on target! wOOt! 🙂

I am also currently sipping on a baby can of Coke Zero, I am not sure that I like this one so much. I used to love Diet Coke but went off it and haven’t found a pop to replace it with yet – which really, is probably a good thing since it’s so bad for me but every now and then I try a sip of one kind or another just to see if I like it. shrug, nothin yet. How weird is it I think I will pour the pop out and get a glass of water? Just not normal I tell ya! lol

Temptation Already? Oh dear…

24 Jun

Alrighty, so it is day three and despite the piece of bday cake placed before me at work I did not cheat! wOOt! 😀 One of the girls at work had her bday, duh, and so one of the other girls brought this huge wonderful looking cake. Home made, coconut dusted, buttercream icing, Mmm! She uses Splenda tho instead of sugar and when I learned Splenda has arsenic in it well, it made me not want to eat it. Not that I ate it before so it’s not like a big sacrifice or hardship to not include it in my food choices. And old roomie, she is henceforth dubbed R, used it and I am sorry but anything that fizzles and has some crazy way noticeable chemical reaction when you put it in your tea is just weird. *shudder*

I digress, so there was this cake, and even tho it was a splenda cake and not a sugar cake I normally would have eaten my piece and wished I could’ve had more, I mean hello? It’s cake! I kept myself very far away from the cake for a good chunk of the day in the hopes if I couldn’t see it I wouldn’t lust after it. I also had a part of my brain trying to find a way I could justify eating a slice; if there is one thing I can do it is find a way to make something that in unhealthy sound healthy. Here is an example; chocolate is good for you because it comes from a bean and beans are good for us. See? Easy! 🙂 What’s scary is I can easily make myself believe stuff like that, oy! So impressionable and easy to trick am I!

I digressed again, oops. So the cake, I avoided the cake thinking that was the easiest way to not cheat and then what happened? X (another girl at work) cut the cake into enough pieces for everyone and brought a piece to my desk, I was busy on the phone and didn’t notice so when I turned around there it was! It’s like it was stalking me! I wondered if it crawled it’s way over to me knowing I was the one person who didn’t want it – similar to how a cat sits on the lap of the one person in the room who doesn’t like cats – but someone mentioned X brought it so my paranoia went away. Once back on sane ground I put my slice of cake to the far reaches of my desk and then blocked my view of it with various tall items. For most of the rest of the day I was ok, didn’t even think about it…ok, that is a lie, I could smell the icing and kept thinking how I was hungry and one little slice wouldn’t kill me…that’s where this blog came in and saved me, phew, I didn’t want to have to explain/justify aka. make an excuse for why I ate it, I can’t believe the blog actually helped prevent me from eating a slice of cake. Go blog go! 🙂

I know on weight watchers you get what are called flex points, for anyone who doesn’t know those are extra points that are allotted to you on a weekly basis instead of daily so that you can fit those little treats into your eating plan. You don’t have to use them but you can if you need/want to. My mom uses hers every evening to fit in her night time glass of wine. I am trying my best to not use them, I think I will get faster results if I don’t indulge in those little extras which is one reason I didn’t want the cake. Another reason is that at work this coming Friday we are having “Fiesta Friday”  – I kid you not. It is s’posed to help with team building or something like that. *rolls eyes* We all have to bring in various ingredients (we picked from a list) and on Friday we will have a Mexican Lunch complete with a pinata…I wonder if they will actually allow us some kind of weapon to hit the pinata with, don’t know that I’d allow our group to vent our irritation with work matters like that! I can just see it now, candy flying everywhere while we all fight over the stick so we can beat up on something…mental health day anybody? So, because of Friday and my knowledge of the fact I am going to be surrounded by all kinds of wonderful foods (and alcohol!) I want to save my flex points to use them that day – if I do use them at all.

I checked in my weight watchers book and a fast food taco is 3 points, not bad actually. I figure since all our toppings are fresh and we are each making our own taco I will load mine with lots of veg and a smaller portion of meat and way small portion of sour cream etc. and it may not even be 3 points. I am still going to count it as 3 just in case tho. I also plan to take a salad with me and have that with my taco so I only eat the one. This should also leave room for a small sliver of whatever kind of dessert will be there, it is a suprise what it is so who knows how many points that’ll be!

Hmm, this post was supposed to be about water –  I didn’t realize I’d blab so long about the cake etc. Mmm cake…*shakes head* ok, enough of that!

Water…we all drink it, probably when we don’t even think we are drinking it since it’s in pretty much everything. We all know it is important to drink a certain amount of it although that amount seems to shift from 6 glasses to 8 glasses (per day) to whatever feels right, to a glass every 2 hours to drinking water whenever you feel hungry because you are more then likely dehydrated. So many different rules! It’s just water! I used to drink almost exclusively Diet Coke, tea, chai latte…um, I think that is pretty much it. There is water in all of those but they don’t really count as a glass of water each, too bad really. I have stopped drinking pop…well, on a daily basis, I still have some if I go to a movie, and I also stopped Chai Lattes (I got mine from Starbucks) because they are ridiculously high in points, 6 points for a grande!!! Thats practically a meal! I shall never give up tea, I was raised on the stuff, I will go to my grave crading a cup of it against my cold body. Since tea doesn’t have calories and I only put the tiniest amount of milk in it I figure this is ok. I realized though that if I get rid of my pop and my latte, where does that leave me? Only tea? Sure I love the stuff but there are limits…so water came in to my life. I was not happy to have it enter my life, it is boring, flat, tasteless, a big yawn really. I looked at it like medicine, I had to take it cause it’s good for me and will make me better…wait, that isn’t right, I wasn’t sick, there in was a problem. It’s easy to suffer through medicine when you know it’s only something you have to swallow for a week or two but this water thing is now for life? Oh geez, the thought is enough to make me want to quit and dive in to a swimming pool of diet coke with chai lattes spaced all around the edge so I can grab one easily. But ok, gotta suck it up, just make the change and maybe it won’t be so bad…right? Well, kinda. I used to chug a glass of water right before bed every night not realizing unti I was drinking it how thirsty I was – I am fairly certain that screams of “dehydrated!”, the past two nights I have about 1/3 of the glass and am perfectly fine. Throughout my day at work I set little goals, one glass of water every two hours. The first day I didn’t make it, lol, I think I got one glass within my first 4 hours at work and half a glass over the rest of the day, pretty pathetic really. And no, once I get home I don’t drink water so any hope of reaching my 6-8 glasses per day rests at the work place. Yesterday wasn’t as hard and today I drank about 4 glasses, practically a record! I know it isn’t my 6-8 but maybe drinking that much water is something that has to be worked up to, a gradual thing. I mean, if I chugged 8 glasses of water today I’d probably feel like I was floating, be peeing every 20 minutes and feel bloated. This way, by the time I get to 8 glasses of water I will be used to drinking larger quantities of the stuff and my body will be happy for the top up instead of feeling abused. That logic sound good to anybody else?

Also, we shouldn’t forget all the water our bodies absorb from our food. Our intestines are wonderful icky things, they suck everything possible out of everything we let pass through them – including water. If you noticed how much fruit I am eating now, and veggies, all those contain a large amount of water so not only am I drinking the stuff I am eating it too! It’s a good way to trick yourself into getting more  water throughout the day, just eat it. 🙂

Here is my food list for the day:

3/4 cup Honey Nut Cheerios = 2 points

1/2 cup 1% milk = 1 point

1 banana = 2 points

tea = 0 points

1 cup green grapes = 1 point

1 nectarine = 1 point

1 orange = 1 point

1/2 cup broccoli and cheese pasta = 4 points

1 salad = o points

1 tbls salad dressing = 1 point

1 cup Maple Baked Beans = 4 points

1 piece Safeway sandwich bread = 2 points

tea = 0 points

Total used today = 19 <— you might think this is good, being under your points, but in weight watchers is isn’t good, the points are an indication of how much fat, calories and fibre you are getting and being lower then your allotted points means your not eating enough and your body may go in to starvation mode. sigh. I still have 6 points and am not hungry (miracle!) and it’s late and I don’t feel like eating so I will eat something small but high in points like a cookie or two and 1/2 cup of 1% milk to use up those points quickly.
