Eagle Ridge Fitness

12 Feb

Two weeks ago I saw an ad for Eagle Ridge Fitness on my facebook news feed. I don’t know what made me click on it but I did and it led me to a video showing all these normal people who had joined Eagle Ridge Fitness and had lost weight, toned muscle and just in general gotten in better shape using this gym.

I called them, asked some questions, and ended up making an appointment for a one-on-one consultation. It was supposed to be last week but I pushed it to this week because I was still too sick last week to go.

Google Map lied to me, it said it was a 35 minute drive but it was longer, plus Google Map sent me to the wrong address so not only was the drive longer than 35 minutes, it was even longer due to me going to the wrong place. Lovely. *rolls eyes*

I was super late for my appointment, luckily the lady I was meeting was understanding about my getting lost, also lucky for me she didn’t have an appointment directly after mine so there was wiggle room for me to be late.

The place is super small, and it isn’t like a traditional gym. You don’t just drop in whenever you feel like it, you choose two days a week that you go in, and you pick a specific time, so say, every Monday and Wednesday at 7pm, That is your time slot and you are expected to be there, if you don’t show they call you to ask where you were – so you are definitely held accountable! You work out with the same people each time you go so you start to feel like a team (so I was told). The workouts are partially tailored to what your goals are, the classes are kept small, 8 people max per session, and the trainers know in advance of any injuries or medical problems you have so they can take those in to account when devising your workout plan.

The second part of their program is about nutrition. They give you a welcome package when you join that has recipes, a generalized meal plan, information on what you should be eating, in what portion, things like that. They also require you to keep a food journal that they look at every month, that is partly to help keep you accountable to what you are eating and also, if you are eating properly and you don’t lose weight in a month then they know to tweak your program. Sounds like a good idea, it helps you avoid plateauing. The lady I spoke with said it takes a couple of weeks for your personalized meal plan to be made, that is why they give you the generalized plan when you join.

All in all I liked what I was told about this program. I don’t like how far of a drive it is from where I live but I’ve driven farther distances for things less important than my fitness and health so the distance isn’t, in my opinion, a good reason to not join.

A truly excellent reason to not join, and my reason for not joining, is the cost. You can either sign up for a year, for 6 months or month-to-month. If you sign up month-to-month it is approx $300/month, the 6 month contract is two hundred something per month and the year long contract is $191 a month. Talk about out of my price range! I asked why it is so much more expensive than a gym membership and the response was it is combining a nutrition plan and personal trainer in to one program, so instead of a person joining a gym and paying for a Weight Watchers membership (as an example) they just join one program and get both, for less. Um…no. Just no. lol. Least not for me. I have access to Weight Watchers material without paying for a membership, so I’m saving money there, and the cost of my local gym is nowhere near what they are estimating. Sure, I don’t have a personal trainer, and sure I don’t have someone creating a program just for me, and sure this means my results will come slower, and sure I don’t have someone calling me when I skip the gym and getting on my case so that I never skip again, but I also don’t have an extra $200-$300 a month to pay for someone to hold my hand while I try to get in shape.

If I had the money I would probably give them a try, it’s not that I think their approach is all that original or amazing, but I think there are times in your life where you need a nudge, heck, a full on push, to get you on your way. I know I need to exercise more, even if I don’t have an amazing workout plan figured out I should at least be running three times a week and doing some basic muscle work if only to keep active, but I don’t. I also know my eating sucks and trying to figure out how to get that back on track leaves me feeling confused and a little lost, which oddly enough leads me to eating bad food in a weird attempt to make myself feel better…using food for comfort, not a good plan!…and yet, I do it, sigh.

But none of that matters, because I don’t have the money. I had a moment where I thought I could maaaybe afford one month, use that as a kick in my butt to get me in a routine of working out, then take what they taught me and do it on my own, but since you don’t get your personalized meal plan until 2-3 weeks in, and from the sounds of it the first month is sort of a learning curve not only for you but for them knowing what works best for you, in order to get anything out of this place you should really go for longer than a month and that I know I can’t afford. I figure, no point in straining to find the pennies to pay for one month when it takes two or more months to really get results.

So for now I will stick with my outdoor walks, my dragon boat practices and my attempts to get my lazy self to the gym – I may not get results as quickly as I would if I was signed up with Eagle Ridge Fitness but I’m determined to get results, even if it does take me a little longer than I’d like. πŸ™‚

Sick Girl = Boring Life

11 Feb

I haven’t been writing in a while but only because I haven’t been doing anything interesting lol I highly doubt anybody wants to read about how I was sitting on my arse, reading and watching tv while feeling like crap as I waited for my immune system to kick in and kill the bug that had invaded my body. Right? Right. πŸ™‚

Luckily my cough is aaaaalmost gone and I feel like I can honestly describe myself as being more on the health side of the scale vs the sick side, so yay for that! lol

Unfortunately, when I am sick I completely lose my appetite and eat such a small amount of food that when I start to get healthy I struggle to get back in the groove of eating more normally. I don’t want to eat more food but I’m being more active, not necessarily with exercising but just with normal life stuff like going to work, running errands, meeting up with friends etc so if I don’t start increasing my food I get exhausted from my normal everyday things. The end result of that is me napping on my living room chair lol πŸ˜›

My first week after being sick I tend to focus on making sure I eat more than once a day and that I eat balanced meals, not just little snacks. I was doing fairly well with that, because I hadn’t indulged in any sort of sweets etc I wasn’t craving any of them, always nice to not be actively wishing I could eat a doughnut lol Buuuut Sunday was a bit of a disaster that left my poor tummy feeling off all the way until Monday evening, not cool!

We had a brunch at work on Sunday and instead of taking my own lunch I opted to eat the brunch food. I took a little bit of all sorts of foods and I’m sorry to say I caved and nabbed two pancakes and 1/4 of a waffle, sigh, such a weakness for those foods! *rolls eyes* I also ate a poached egg, some tomatoes with seasoning, a shrimp salad, some diced potatoes with fried onions, ummm…for the main course that’s about it. Then I took not one but two desserts! An absolutely lovely lemon meringue tart and a creme brule with blueberries and strawberries on top, Mmm!

I felt fine while eating but about twenty minutes after finishing my lunch my tummy felt, well, not sick, just not impressed. I think it was just too much too soon, for sure with those desserts anyways! Ooops…

So I’ve been trying to backpedal since Sunday and focus on choosing healthier foods and making sure I eat proper portion sizes. I am sorry to say, I haven’t been doing very well, sigh. I was out and about yesterday and had limited food choices for dinner, I ended up eating Taco Time which while tasty, and something I haven’t eaten in a freakishly long time did nothing for my weight loss plan lol Then today I ate some maple flavoured baked beans and toast (which I have no guilt about) but that’s all I’ve eaten, and it’s almost 10pm. Can you say below my calories for the day? Eesh.

I’m hoping tomorrow, instead of going over due to fast food or being under due to not eating I can somehow hit the middle ground and eat a normal amount while getting a bit of exercise in there. Theoretically it is a do-able thing, in reality though…who knows! lol

Lunch For Breakfast

31 Jan

A friend of mine who is also trying to get in to better shape invited me over for lunch, well, technically it started as we were going to go out for lunch then for a walk but it turned in to her inviting me over for lunch and then we’d go walking. I figure eating in is always better for the wallet so I’m game…it helps that she’s a chef so she’s amazing with food lol

When I got there she had this lovely spread all ready to go…

2015-01-29 12.08.20

Thing is, somewhere along the way I got it in to my head we were having breakfast so I got there, saw this lovely food and immediately thought “salad for breakfast? huh?”

Lucky for me I’m willing to eat almost anything at any time of day, regardless of what I think I “should” be eating…though I was kinda sad I wouldn’t be eating a pancake, which is what I would have ordered if we’d gone out lol

This is a better view of my breakfast/lunch:

2015-01-29 12.18.47

That my friends is a cup of Tetley tea, a glass of water, a slice of gluten free toast (she has gone gluten free, I have not), salad with tomato, cucumber, a hard boiled egg, cheddar cheese, avocado, salsa, two salmon cakes and some ranch dressing on the side. I like my dressing on the side because then I can dip my knife in and lightly distribute dressing to every second or third forkful of salad instead of drowning the entire salad.

What a lovely way to start the day!

She even went so far as to have dessert! She amazes me. If left up to me we’d have been eating toasted sandwiches or cereal lol

For dessert I had:

2015-01-29 13.18.02

There was a whole bunch of cut up fruit, I selected mango and cantaloupe. She also has kiwi and, hmm, something else I’m blanking on right now, watermelon maybe? The little bread looking thing is home made cookie/loaf, it has cranberries and orange in it and holy crap was it tasty! I ate two pieces! lol

Actually that is a lie, she sent me home with some leftovers and in those leftovers were two more pieces of the cookie/loaf and I ate them later in the day sooooo I ate 4 pieces in total, over the span of hours…like that makes it any better? lol I’m not sure what to call it, it had the texture of a cookie, but the shape of a loaf cake.

We didn’t end up going for our walk, which sucks, because we got so busy gabbing we completely lost track of time and when we finally looked at a clock we both had places to be. We are going to try to make this a regular occurrence though, not always eating food at her place, but walking every Thursday. We both usually have that day off and theoretically should be able to make it work. I’m hopeful for it as it would be nice to go walking weekly with her, it’s always easier to stick with any form of exercise, easy or hard, if you are being held accountable by someone. πŸ™‚

Stouffer’s Saute Sensations

9 Jan

Last week I came across a sale item at Safeway that I decided to try, it is the Stouffer’s Saute Sensations. I chose the Grilled Chicken Teriyaki and oh man was it tasty!

2015-01-01 16.44.13

It was on sale for about $6 and each package gives you two servings, even I can do the math that tells me my meal cost $3 – pretty decent!

The package contains brown rice and a medley of tender vegetables…that is a direct quote from the bag lol

Per serving (so half the bag) is 260 calories, 5g fat, 42g carbs, 3g fibre and 16g protein. So yeah, high in carbs but ok everywhere else, in my opinion anyways. πŸ™‚

It tasted really good and one serving is plenty, I wasn’t left feeling hungry or deprived and it kept me filled up for hours, always nice when that happens. After I cooked it all I split it in half in the pan, put half on my plate and let the other half cool before putting it in a container to take to work the next day for my dinner. It heated up nicely in the microwave, the chicken didn’t dry out and the veggies weren’t overly droopy. Oh and the veggies kept their bright colour, which never happens when I make a stir-fry type dish from scratch…what’s with that?

It looked so good it impressed the people at work and one of the guys now thinks I am a good cook lol Since technically nobody asked me if I cooked it I wasn’t lying when I let it be implied I did in fact cook my meal and didn’t just pour it from a bag and heat it up lol

When I ate it at home I added half a diced avocado to the top, not because I thought the dish wouldn’t taste good on it’s own but because my avocado was at the stage of “eat me now or by tomorrow I will be brown and useless”, I don’t care to be threatened by avocados but whatcha gonna do? They always win!

a yummy and healthy dinner

a yummy and healthy dinner

I tried to push the avocado to the side so you could see the food from the bag unimpeded.

All in all I was really impressed with the meal. I don’t know what it’s regular price is so I can’t say if I would buy it all the time, but on sale it was definitely worth it! Something to keep an eye out for. πŸ™‚

Carrot Juice Review

7 Jan

Alrighty, so in an attempt to be healthier I started researching green smoothies, basically, smoothies with lots of veggies in them (mostly green veggies), they are supposed to be meal replacements and an amazing addition to your healthy lifestyle. Or so many a blog and article say…

I was reading a bunch of different articles to find out what I should be putting in my green smoothie and in what quantities and well, the research wasn’t going great. A lot of people seem to be all “this is my way, it is the best way, follow my rules!” Bunch of green smoothie freaks happenin out there! πŸ˜‰ lol

So after basically learning only four things for sure (1) start adding green stuff slowly cause it’s an acquired taste (2) carrots will help add some sweetness (3) everyone seems to use a lot of kale and (4) hmm, I would have sworn there was a fourth…oh well! πŸ˜› I went to the store to start my shopping cause yeah, not a big owner of kale over here…I didn’t know what it was actually and had to google it πŸ˜›

A friend recommended I check out the drinks and smoothies by Healthy Planet, they have a green smoothie drink, she said why not just read the bottle, see what they put in theirs and buy the same stuff. Brilliant! I am not above copying someone if they already figured out the best way to do something, cause ya know, sincerest form of flattery an all that. πŸ˜‰

I was checking out their drinks and what caught my eye but a bottle of carrot juice by Bolthouse Farms. I read a book yeeeeeears ago where the main character, in one small scene, was drinking carrot juice. From that day I have always wondered about it. The character was super healthy, fit, ate well, I liked her, and I dunno, I got intrigued. Not intrigued enough to go off searching for a bottle of carrot juice, obviously, but it was something that always stayed in my head.

Knowing I love carrot soup I decided why not buy a bottle of carrot juice, it’s right here in front of me and on sale, it’s like it is meant to be! Adding something healthy to my list of healthy choices can only be a good thing, right? Right!

2015-01-03 13.16.49

Well lemme tell ya, I am oh so grateful I only bought one bottle cause omg no! No! No! No! No! That juice is nasty! Ugh! *shudder*

I tried. I swear I tried but I couldn’t get past two small sips and down the drain it went. So amazingly not good.

What kind of crazy person came up with this idea? I’m all for healthy but wow, just…No!

I’d like to be clear I am not blaming Bolthouse, it’s not that I think they personally made a horrible juice but that other companies have an ok version, I’m now of the firm opinion that carrots should not be made in to juice. Keep them as soup. Keep them as solids. Keep them as garnish. Just don’t turn them in to juice, that’s when you know you’ve gone over to the dark side…or would it be the orange side? πŸ˜‰

Back To What Worked

6 Dec

Waaaaay back, like 4 years ago, I started Weight Watchers. I didn’t go to meetings, I didn’t officially join, I got the books from my mother, the slider to calculate food points, a small notebook I could take everywhere and I started the program. If you really want to know how it went go to the very first post in this blog because that is when I started blogging. (First Post) I used this blog to hold myself accountable, since I wasn’t going to meetings or being an online member. I also blogged on an almost daily basis and listed each day what I ate, how many points it was, and if I was over, under or right on the dot with my daily points. Once I started exercising I also started blogging about that.

It was slow progress, as in suuuuper slow, my body did not want to lose the weight. I was hoping for losing two pounds a week and found I was lucky to lose one a week. Not because I was cheating, I was actually pretty good at following the plan, it was just how my body chose to be, shrug.

Well, after following Weight Watchers for hmm, a year and a bit I think, it stopped working for me. I hit a plateau and nothing I did would get my body to budge. It drove me nuts! And if staying at the same weight wasn’t bad enough, I started gaining weight! I wasn’t sure if what I was actually gaining was muscle since I was working out more, or if it was fat, all I knew was the number on the scale was freaking me out and I was having issues dealing with it.

That was when I realized Weight Watchers left me ill equipped to deal with eating healthy on my own. I didn’t really understand calories or fat grams since everything got converted to Weight Watchers points, I had no idea how many calories I should be eating, what I should be doing to get over the plateau, how or even if I should incorporate going no carb, or gluten free or any of the other fads out there. I felt adrift, with no rules to follow, no program to cling to and no idea how to continue on.

I know, I’m soooo dramatic! πŸ˜› lol

Sooooooo dramatic!

Sooooooo dramatic!

I tried a variety of things once I stopped following Weight Watchers, none of them amazing. Mostly I focused on eating less, but ended up eating way under what I should be eating on a daily basis, and not really getting the right variety of food groups in my daily food, oops! A friend put me on a super strict eating plan, designed to get me lean, because the agent I had at the time wanted me 10-15lbs underweight even though I was at the low end of the weight range I am supposed to be at for my height. The problem with that plan was it is not possible to maintain long term. It was high protein, low carb, high healthy fat, which sounds great but the quantity I was allowed a day was quite small and left me hungry all the time.

When I started the job I am at now I fell off the wagon and fell hard. The plan is also strict about timing, timing between meals and timing of meals to when you exercise and my work schedule impeded that greatly. Combine that with being oh so amazingly strict and I’ve never been able to manage to get back on that plan.

Well, obviously the various things I have tried since falling off that plan didn’t really work. I am not as large as I was when I first started Weight Watchers all those years ago, but I am larger than I want to be, and I am pissed off at myself that I let myself gain some of that weight back. I worked so hard to lose that weight, and it took so freakin long to come off and what do I do? I let myself gain some of it back?? Idiot!

Calling myself names, and feeling bad about what I let happen will not create change. A friend and I have decided that instead of just talking about how we want to look different we are going to actually start working towards creating that change, novel idea huh? πŸ˜‰

For me, this means going back to what once worked for me, that’s riiiiight, I am going to once again be Weight Watchering it! I know I said the program didn’t teach me how to lose or maintain weight or be healthy when not following the program, and I stick by that, however, when following Weight Watchers before it did work for a time. I am hoping it will work for me again and help me get a little more control over my eating plan and from there, well, I’ll have to figure something out lol πŸ˜›

So, I have dug out of the drawer my Weight Watchers books and also found the Points Calculator. I won’t be following the same Weight Watchers program I followed last time because there is a new program out, called Weight Watchers Points Plus and it works a little differently than the program I followed. There is a different way to calculate points, both the amount of points you get in a day and how many points a food is. I can use the calculator to track my points for the day and for the week, eliminating the need for the notebook, but I like being able to flip back and see my progress so I am sticking with using a notebook for tracking. Also, calculating how many points a food is will be a bit more complicated, in the old program you just needed the calories, fat and fiber but now you need more information, so its looking like the points calculator will become my new best friend lol

My Weight Watchers Stuff

My Weight Watchers Stuff

Don’t mind the cat’s leg in the picture, I couldn’t convince him to move, lol.

Today was my first day following the program, I can’t say for sure if I ate the right amount of points as some of the food didn’t have nutritional information so I had to estimate, but I figure it’s better to track and estimate and be close to my pointsΒ than not be tracking or checking the food’s points values and leaving it all up to chance, right?

That being said, it is the end of the day and omg I am crazy hungry! *rolls eyes* I have a feeling I’m in for a rough first week…

Exercise Interuptus

7 Nov

I’ve been working out to the Jillian Michaels Ripped In 30 dvd lately, yes I know I attempted it before and failed miserably but I figured why not try again? πŸ™‚

Why oh why haven't I seriously started this yet??

Attempt Number 2!

I really did plan to follow the dvd the way it is set up – there are four different workouts, labelled Week 1, Week 2, Week 3 and Week 4. You are supposed to work out 6 days a week and you progress through the workouts until you’ve been working out for a month and are, apparently, ripped.

Being the doubting type of person that I am, I don’t believe I would ever be ripped in 30 days, even if I followed the work out plan and meal plan religiously. That just isn’t possible lol I was hopeful for being in better shape than when I started though. Small goals my friends, small goals! lol

So day 4 of week 1 and wouldn’t ya know it, I was injured. Lovely. *rolls eyes* I hurt my shoulder which was seriously impeding normal day to day activities let alone push-ups, planks and free weight work. I had to take a break from the dvd and baby the shoulder for a bit. After about 4 days of babying I went back to the dvd and gave it a try, using lower weights than previously. The shoulder seemed ok so I kept going. Well, sort of, sigh.

Life got in the way, as it has a tendency to do and I missed a day, then a couple days later I missed another day, all in all, it took me two and a bit weeks to finish Week 1 of the dvd workouts lol I’m pretty sure that would get me a severe tongue lashing from Jillian if she were to find out, good thing she doesn’t know I exist! πŸ˜‰

Yesterday I decided screw this, I’m bored with the workout for Week 1, I wanna graduate to Week 2, I can do this! *insert battle cry here*

On to Week 2!

Um, wow, I’m so not ready for Week 2 lol Some of the moves I can’t do due to severe lack of coordination. Oh geez was it bad, as in totally horribly bad, there is this move that I was so off with I’m pretty sure I got no exercise benefit from it at all! You start standing with your legs together, arms at your side holding dumbbells. You lunge forward and as you land in the lunge position you do a bicep curl, then the leg that is forward swings backwards, not back to standing position but behind you to another lunge, during the movement your arms go back down to your side then as you land in the lunge position your arms do another bicep curl. It confused my brain and my body lol I kept curling at the wrong time *rolls eyes*

There were other moves that I had to do the modified version of because of either confusion, inability or exhaustion. πŸ˜› Jillian would be so disappointed, sigh.

jillian

About halfway through the workout my phone rang, which never happens, I communicate almost exclusively via text or email…or facebook…So the phone ringing is a rare enough thing I took a look at the screen and it was an uber important person (my agent) so of course I answered. He actually had to ask for me because I was panting when I answered and didn’t sound like myself lol He was calling for an uber important thing (an audition) so totally worth the pausing of the dvd. We chatted for a while then I had to decide, start the workout back at the beginning because even though I kept walking the entire time I was on the phone my body had completely cooled down, or start where I paused it and basically force my body to leap back in to the high intensity part of the workout.

I opted for hitting play and continuing where I left off, mostly due to the horror I felt at the idea of repeating what I had just done. Nope. Nuh-uh. Wasn’t happening!

At the end of the workout I felt like I’d cheated a bit, since I’d had that break, but figured I’d make up for it the next day (which, fyi, totally didn’t, oops! πŸ˜‰ )

I have bad luck with this dvd, first my workouts get interrupted because of an injury, then because of a phone call. I can’t decide if it’s the universe’s way of telling me to stop using that dvd or the universe’s way of issuing me a challenge. Since I like the idea of a challenge better I’m taking it as such and will continue with the Week 2 workouts, let’s see where they take me! To Week 3? To injury? Who knows!

The bigger thing to ponder is…how long will it take me to complete Week 2?

Guess there’s only one way to find out! lol Bring it on Jillian. Bring. It. On. πŸ™‚

this makes me laugh and shrink back in terror at the same time lol

Best Foodie Website Ever!

4 Oct

Today was a Subway kind of day. Actually, I didn’t want food, all I wanted was the fountain diet coke but I figured that the pop alone didn’t qualify as lunch sooooo I got a sub also.

Because I forgot to take a picture of the sub before I ate it...

Because I forgot to take a picture of the sub before I ate it…all I have is a picture of the logo lol

I went with my standard option, a 6 inch turkey sub on 9-grain wheat bread, with white cheese, toasted, loaded with veggies and topped with mustard and light mayo. It may seem boring but I really like it – and not in a it’s-a-healthy-choice-so-I’ll-eat-it kind of like it but I legit like it. πŸ™‚ I Β love that you can have avocado, I thought it was supposed to be a limited time offer but it’s been around for ages and doesn’t seem to be getting phased out, maybe it’s so popular they realized they should keep it? shrug. I dunno, I’m just happy it’s a choice.

My sub is more veggie than meat lol I get spinach, avocado, tomato, cucumber, green pepper, red onion, black olives and banana peppers. Mmm! Don’t you love how many different colours veggies come in? My sub always look so purdy πŸ˜‰ lol

I still remember by heart how many Weight Watcher’s points my sub is but now I’m counting calories and those I do not have memorized. I checked out the Subway website this evening to find the calories and discovered they updated it quite a bit since I last took a look and holy cow, amazing website!!

You pull up a chart that has all their items listed, just like every other nutritional information chart you find on restaurant’s websites but! this one is different! You click on the item you ate and it takes you to a new page where it explains the nutritional information you are seeing is if your sub was on white or wheat bread and had no condiments. But c’mon, who doesn’t put some sort of condiment on there, right? So then you click on a button that says “Calculate Yours” and boom! you get this amazing page that has all the options listed, you can say exactly which vegetables you had, which cheese, which condiments and as you pick and choose what you had on your sub the nutritional information that is showing on the side of the page updates itself.

Seriously, best. nutritional. website. EVER!

Turns out my sub with all it’s modifications is 440 calories – good to know! )

As I was googling for a picture of the Subway logo I came across a Subway scandal! *shocked face* Turns out people have been measuring their subs and they are shorter than they are supposed to be, the footlong is coming in at 11″ which makes me wish I’d measured mine before eating it lol Next time! πŸ˜›

Hunting For Information

3 Oct

I met a friend for coffee today which turned in to lunch at White Spot which turned in to my first meal that I can’t properly track because I didn’t cook it at home. Erg.

I knew this was bound to happen but why-oh-why did it have to happen so soon? *pout* I’m weird in that if I am tracking I want to be able to track perfectly for every single thing I eat, if something happens and I can’t track a meal then I feel “what is the point” and I usually quit. It’s stupid, I know. It’s just that if I’m doing something, I want to do it right, shrug.

So for the rest of the day I didn’t know what to do. Should I eat? Should I assume my meal was all my calories for the day and my punishment for eating something I shouldn’t have is that I don’t eat again today? What do I dooooooo?

Well, duh, I went online and went hunting for the nutritional information lol Gotta love the internet!

At first I couldn’t find what I needed, the salad is new and I wasn’t seeing it on any of the nutritional information charts that White Spot has online…granted I was searching while at work so I couldn’t fully dedicate my focus to my sleuthing lol When I got home I was all ready to admit defeat for tracking my food today but I decided to give it another go and boom! Found it! *happy dance* Actually, more like horrified gasp…

I am not so dumb that I don’t know that restaurant salads are not always healthy, that in fact, they can be hiding a huuuuuge amount of calories, fat etc and you might just be better off buying a chicken burger or sandwich or some other dish, that knowledge didn’t stop me from buying a salad though…and no, it wasn’t one of the salads marked as a healthy choice, it was a new salad that sounded tasty…I let my desire for something tasty dictate my food choice and I am now kicking myself for that. Kicking hard!

The salad that I ate (ate every single bite of I might add) is the Candied Salmon Spinach Salad. I know, I know, the word “candied” is a dead give away, sigh. I somehow thought the spinach and salmon in the salad would counteract the candied part and the dressing…obviously it did not.

Here, this is the salad description, how can a girl resist the sound of this salad?

Candied salmon, fresh strawberries, gingered pecans, red onion & Okanagan goat cheese on spinach dressed with our champagne vinaigrette. With garlic panini bread.

And yeah, I ate the bread too…

After my second round of internet searching I learned that my lunch was 868 calories! Broken down that is 682 calories for the salad and 186 for the garlic bread.

Yes, I do know I could have saved calories by getting the dressing on the side but I didn’t so no point in lecturing me about it now. πŸ˜›

Here comes the second problem with food…when I was at work I had to decide if I should eat dinner or not. I decided I should, cause if I skip eating that’ll mess with my metabolism, right? Right. So, I ate dinner.

Dinner at work today was salmon (not candied!), with squash and other veggies on top of couscous. Soooo, healthy? I dunno, shrug. The salmon didn’t have a sauce or anything, so I’m leaning towards that part being healthy, and the veggies were probably ok too, but what about couscous?

After some hunting online I came up with approximate numbers for dinner, 88 calories for the couscous, 82 calories for the veggies and 354 calories for the salmon. The calories for the salmon pains me, pains! That’s a total count of 524 which puts me at a total of 1392 for the day.

I can’t decide how I feel about that number. *confused face*

My first two days tracking my calories I wanted to be under 1200 calories a day, the second day I went over a bit and ate 1263, but I thought that wasn’t sooooo bad. After lunch today I was all ready to be super pissed off at myself but I was talking to a friend at work who is a personal trainer and she said I should not be eating under 1200 calories a day, that is too few calories and I’ll put myself in to starvation mode. I’m still not sure exactly how many calories I should be eating, but if I am aiming for 1200 now, then 1392 isn’t so much over that I can’t recover from it, right?…Riiiiiight…ok, so maybe I am trying to make myself feel better and I could be way off, I dunno, sigh.

What sucks is that it is now almost midnight and I am hungry *pout* Looks like my two high calorie meals today didn’t keep me full, nor did all the drinks I had which no, I don’t mean alcoholic drinks but diet coke, water and tea.

So yeah, that is how my third day went, ordering ridiculously bad for me food and ending up being hungry at the end of the day. I want a cookie *pout* πŸ˜‰

The Smell of Stupid

2 Oct

You might not think that ‘stupid’ can have a smell, let me assure you, it can.

I was cooking dinner this evening and two things happened. The first is this semi-yummy meal…

Mmm, pasta, shrimp and veggies.

Mmm, pasta, shrimp and veggies.

It is Catelli Healthy Harvest pasta, no name mixed veggies, 9 frozen pre-cooked shrimp all mixed up with Classico Alfredo & Sun dried Tomato pasta sauce. I rate it a semi-yummy because I prefer a higher sauce-to-pasta ratio so to me it was a bit bland. I cooked 85 grams (1 cup) of pasta because the box said that is a serving, ummm, yeah, way too much! Next time I will half the amount I cook and that should be plenty, bonus is that I can keep the same amount of sauce (1/4 cup) and that should be a much better sauce-to-pasta ratio for me. πŸ™‚

But really, the meal is not the most important thing that occurred during the cooking of dinner. This also happened…

How lovely, melted plastic!

How lovely, melted plastic!

Something you should know about my kitchen, I have almost no counter space. I don’t mean I have a normal sized counter and it is covered with stuff, I mean to the left of the sink I have a space wide enough to have two cups side-by-side (so, tiny space!) and to the right of the sink I have just enough space to hold a dish drainer…is that what it’s called? I mean the thing you put your just washed dishes in to so they can air dry. And that is it. That is all my counter space.

This means a lot of food prep happens on top of the stove because there is nowhere else to do it.

Soooo, this evening I have water in a pot coming to a boil on one front element, on a back element I have a pan heating up to eventually cook the shrimp in and on the other front element I have my kitchen scale, which I am using to measure out my veggies. The veggies are kept frozen so I kept having to pause in the pouring of them in to the bowl that is on top of the scale so I can hit the bag against the edge of the sink in an effort to break them apart.

Then…the smell starts. It doesn’t smell good. I couldn’t figure out what it was, none of my food should smell like that, but I don’t have any candles burning, nor is anything else in the apartment creating a smell, so what the heck is it?

Even though I don’t like the smell I can’t figure out what it is so I keep doing what I am doing, figuring whatever is causing the smell will stop eventually, or make itself known.

I take a look at the pan on the back burner and realize it isn’t warming up, which makes me take a look at the stove knobs which made me realize holy shit I’d turned on the front element and was cooking my kitchen scale! Ack!

I immediately pulled the scale off the burner and strings of melted plastic spread from the bottom of the scale to the element, like melted cheese on a pizza, but smellier.

Sigh.

I put the scale upside down on the edge of the sink, I couldn’t think of any better place it should be put to cool down lol and stared at it in horror. Horror! This oh-so-awesome scale was a gift from my brother yeeeeears ago! I’ve been using this scale at least 7 years…holy crap I feel old now…but that’s besides the point! This scale is awesome, and I cooked it! Who does that?!?! 😦

Not gonna lie, I started to get upset not only because I was stupid and cooked the scale but because now I was going to have to try to find money to buy a new scale asap so I can keep on with weighing out my food, sigh. Then I remembered I have a back-up scale, yay! Couple years or so ago my mom got given a scale from a friend and she passed it on to me, it is a Weight Watchers scale that can calculate the points of a food while it is on the scale, cool huh? I didn’t use it because I wasn’t following Weight Watchers at the time and if I did need to weigh something, well, I already had a scale, shrug. Me being me though I kept the WW scale, in the box, in perfect condition, in a rubbermaid container where it would be safe.

Point to me for keeping the scale! πŸ™‚

I pulled the WW scale out of storage after I finished dinner and was so close to being relieved when I realized it didn’t have a battery and it takes a 9V battery, not exactly something I just randomly have lying around. I know, I’m so weird right? πŸ˜‰ lol

But fear not! When I went to put my dishes in the sink I tested the scale. It had cooled off so I flipped it over and tried turning it on and holy crap it works! Wowza! πŸ˜€ I cooked the scale so much I can see clear through to it’s innards but that sucker still works! Talk about quality made! lol

Now all I have to do is figure out how to get the melted plastic that has become one with the burner off the burner…and ideas?
